About the author

Dom Hélder Pessoa Câmara was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Olinda and Recife.

He retired as archbishop in 1985, and lived to see many of his reforms rolled back by his conservative successors.

He is famous for the quotation, "When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist."

My copy of this out-of-print/hard-to-get book is a PDF that is only 58 pages. All of the Intro (not written by Camara) is deleted, so it was a quick read in soft-copy. Its format is completely different than Romero's The Violence of Love in that it is a book from its own beginning and not a collection of sermons and scriptural allusions. Being a Bishop, Camara certainly refers to Christianity, but I'd have to say this work might be just more spiritual; Christo-centric perhaps, but not orthodox, Thank God. A good, general guide on the basics of how and why illegitimate power systems should be exposed. Search for Camara on video sites; he was an amazing speaker.

Écrit en 1969 par un prêtre brésilien, ce livre, véritable manifeste pour une foi inclusive luttant contre l'injustice, remet les pendules à l'heure. Le style est impeccable, et si l'ouvrage a quelque peu vieilli sur la forme, le fond n'a rien perdu de son actualité.
