‘I am an ordinary, unremarkable person who has lived through extraordinary, remarkable times.’
Ten-year-old Faye is growing up in an uncertain age; the point of no return has long passed for the planet’s changing, ever more unstable climate. Floods, droughts and storms are commonplace; pandemics the norm. But, having known nothing different, she lives a calm, sheltered life with her adored mother and spirited younger sister.
But something is about to change her life, and the way she sees the world, forever. An event that has the whole human race looking apprehensively to the skies. One which will shine an uncomfortable light on humanity itself and threaten our very survival.
‘When I was born, my arrival coincided with a momentous and terrible milestone. Our mark on the planet had become indelible, irreversible, signaling the beginning of the end of human history. And yet, you would have struggled to find it reported on the news if you didn’t know what you were looking for. Only a handful of people spoke about it or openly lamented it. Because – what was the use? We had lived through the short window of time when something could have been done, and we had allowed the window to close. And that was that. What was the point in troubling ourselves with something that could no longer be changed? Besides, we had generations left to us. The changes were creeping, imperceptible; easy to ignore.
So it was that, by the time I turned ten years old, the Earth had already been stolen from us. By generations past, steadily chipping away almost without being noticed. Slowly at first, maybe unwittingly. But then consciously, fuelled by greed, a desire for progress, and the unfathomable need for power by which our species is characterised. But we, the ones born afterwards, didn’t even know anything was wrong. How can you truly be aware of something when it’s never been any different?
Until that summer, when everything suddenly changed forever.’
When strange signals are detected, originating from somewhere in outer space, it sparks panic and disquiet among the human race. And for one young girl, it begins an awakening. A realisation that all is not as it seems on planet Earth, and the safe haven she calls home is merely an illusion.
And then her own mother is the expert called in to mediate between the senders of the signals and humankind, and suddenly the unfolding events begin to feel a lot closer to home.
A thought-provoking vision of the future.
What would happen if mankind’s greed and apathy meant that we lost the chance to save the world?
What would the planet be like in 40, 50 years’ time?
How would the generation responsible be able to explain why? To their children, and grandchildren.
