Dyslexic friendly fiction for adults by BOTH Press. There are very few initiatives for reading for pleasure for adults. The eight titles BOTH Press has already published are the only readily available dyslexic friendly fiction for adults in the UK and can be found in libraries and any bookshop. The scale of accessibility is not nearly enough, as around 10% of the UK population deal with some form of dyslexia. Following their successful "Open Dyslexia" Kickstarter in 2021, which led to publishing eight dyslexic friendly fiction titles, BOTH Press is launching on June 7th 2022, their second Kickstarter "Open Dyslexia: the sequel" with more high-profile authors than ever before, lasting 30 days and finishing on the July 4th 2022.
Roulette ships as nicknamed, are dangerous and sexy. They are small, fast, tough and used for random jumping.
The reporter Tamara Vance aims for the top anchor job and journeys to the backwater of Pik station, with her sights set on Sal Dervish, the master of the Wild Cat, who seems to have lost his nerve, and it is rumoured will never jump again.
But the story behind Sal’s fall from stardom is too good to pass up and would guarantee her fame. Tamara finds out first hand that sometimes there are good reasons to run and never go back to the stars.
Six Lights off Green Scar is a taut, focussed space adventure that hits all the right notes. Sal Dervish is a washed-up spaceship captain ekeing out a miserable, down-at-heel existence on a remote moon while his ship rots in dock. Dervish is notorious for what he got wrong, shunned by all who know his history, living from day to, regret to regret, bottle to bottle, girl to girl.
Ripe, in other words, for an offer of redemption - if he can face the consequences.
Powell gives us all this, and more - the 'roulette ships' with their devil-may-care crews jaunting into the unknown, the ambitious reporter who wants to known What Happened, the sinister figure in the shadows - in his dynamic first few pages, which set up a mystery, pose a challenge and point towards adventure.
He follows up with action, danger and the need for choices. It all cleverly plays on notes and imagery we may be familiar with from the best of crime and adventure stories, but which are transformed here, the noir hints remaining but reborn in a new world, a new universe, in which those choices - and their consequences - may be much larger than we imagine.
A perfect, riveting narrative that you'll want to gobble up in a single reading, I think - so... make it so!
A really quick little novella with a quirky premise. Sal is a disgraced random jumper (in a dystopian, space travel type world) and Tamara offers him a shot at redemption. There is definitely a lot that could be explored in a fuller length story with these characters and in this world. For example - whats the black ship? What happens to Dieter? Dieter and Kate's back story? What happens to the Wild Cat in that last jump? Sci-fi fans will definitely enjoy this!
Thanks to the publisher and Love Book Tours for sending me a copy of this book to review.
This was a short story but even so there was a lot crammed in. I really enjoyed the idea behind this story of ships that randomly jump to places in the galaxy to see what they find. It was a basic plot but I feel it could have easily made a full length book. The characters were well fleshed out and we got a lot of the main characters back story and what led him to this point. There was also a good amount of action and suspense. It was just a very well written short story and I was sad when it was over so quickly!
Six lights off green scar was given to me by @lovebooks . Thank you for letting me review this book and being part of the tour. This is a dyslexia friendly book and is about space. This is definitely out of my comfort zone due to be not really reading about space. I found it but slow to get into at first but then it hooked me in and I really wanted to find out what happens to Sal and his girlfriend Tamara. I am dyslexic and I found the print a lot easy to read than normal books. Thank you @booksonthehill @lovebookstours @igbooktours for letting me part of this tour and for reviewing this book . I give this book 5 stars.
Picked up a copy of this at Bristolcon, where I had the pleasure of getting it signed by the author himself! I also talked to the staff that work at the bookshop that publishes these quick reads, who were likewise very lovely.
The initiative to make the book scene more friendly to those with reading difficulties was super cool to see! I'd not heard of these editions before, but as someone who loves short stories, I'll definitely be buying more in the future. Not only are they fun short reads, they are also great bite-size stories through which one can get a taste of an author's style. Highly recommend!
As for the story itself - I thought it was solid. It paints a picture of a future but leaves some things up to one's imagination. I'm always impressed by how much can be packed into a short story/novella/etc, and this was no exception.
It was definitely an adult read as well - don't let the big font fool you. My favourite part was probably the ending, although the story didn't necessarily go where I wanted it to, it ended appropriately. This was my first read from Powell, and I'm excited to see what his longer works are like.
🎨 Artwork The book was an ebook but the colours and image in the cover definately capture the imagination and set the scene for the book.
✒️ Style I really enjoyed the authors style. I was gripped throughout and had to read this book in one sitting.
👪 Characters The lead characters were Sal Dervish, a retired Roulette ship piolet & Tamara Vance a reporter recording Sal's memoirs and current events.
📈 Plot Sal is a former roulette ship piolet who is has allegedly lost his edge. Tamara, the reporter is looking for her break through story and hopes to find it in Sal. Is so hard to not give away spoilers but... Oh what a cliff hanger! I really want to know what happens next....
🤓 Read more Yes, yes please, I want to know what happens next...
📢 Favourite quote "He's a small time gangster wannabe and I don't want him on my ship"
❓Question for the author Will you be writing a book two?
🌻SpLD comments (from a dyslexic)🌻 The font size, spacing and text was ideal for me as a dyslexic. I managed this book in one sitting, which was great.
What an interesting premise. Six Lights Off Green Scar is a short story that follows Sal who owns a Roulette Ship in which he frequently took part in the ultimate gamble, Random Jumping... that is until disaster struck.
I really enjoyed this. I do like science fiction and could see this as a full size novel, or movie even. Considering it is a short story, there is enough back story to give the characters meat to their bones and for the reader to understand what is happening. I really did not want it to end where it did either.
This is another Dyslexic friendly read released by BOTH Publishing, and while I can't comment on its suitability as I don't have dyslexia myself, I can certainly see the printing differences compared to books I've read in the past that have not been published in this manner. I would be very interested to hear views on this book from anyone with dyslexia.
This another of the Dyslexia Quick Reads that I have been lucky enough to read and review and yet again I have not been diappointed. I really enjoyed this short story that is sci-fi based which has a compelling storyline that gives a good amount of backstory without being long winded, so it stays true to its form, The characters are well developed - suprisingly really well developed for a short story which I really appreciated and have to give credit to the author for doing an amazing job with that. As usual I have to give a shout out to the format of the book which is so well laid out and is really comprehensive. I just love this series.
The initial set-up reminded me of Frederik Pohl's Gateway (wherein pilots take alien ships to random destinations), but this is more of a tale hot-shot pilots deliberately pushing the envelope to see how far they can get, and what they find when they get there. A short and sharp little story about life, death and grief, and once again with Powell's work I find myself thinking: "There should be more of this." It's a great setting for more stories, maybe a novel or two? Also, yes, it would be a good background for a role-playing game as well.
This dyslexic friendly novella shows that Mr Powell excels across formats. Here there is still very human characters often in extraordinary circumstances pared down in a thrilling exploration of loss. Highly recommend this gold nugget if you can get it.
