What I found most useful was the excellent introduction in Chapter 1. It is the best one I have ever read (out of three different info theory books). It is a historical survey of the progress of information theory that constantly connects information theory and coding as inseparable--something which might not be clear to non-specialists. The historical landmarks are touched upon briefly, but you know why they are important moments in the history of information theory. Reading only chapter 1, here are the chronological headlines:

1. conceptual introduction to information theory
2. the birth of information theory
3. development of info theory
4. appearance of arithmetic code and the interaction between info theory and computer theory
5. information communication models and data compression
6. multiterminal info theory (multi-source, multi-channel, multi-receiver)
7. universal coding
8. arithmetic info theory
9. rate distortion theory
10. memory coding
11. gambling and data compression
12. random number generators
13. cryptography
14. distributed signal processing
15. reunion between info theory and computer theory
16. future outlook for info theory

At times, the introduction may lose the reader a little, but generally it is very good.

This book does not consider quantum information theory or biological information propagation in evolution in any detail.

I didn't know this work was originally published in Japanese! The English translation I am reading reads very well.
