With the creature vanished, tensions rise at the school after it's revealed that head wizard Almagest's death may not have been an accident.
Meanwhile having discovered clues to the whereabouts of the feared Firebrand shards, Kuelack sets out to find them together with the disinherited Dragonlord Ramus, whilst Kuelack's sadistic and power hungry wife Gradine embarks on a campaign to kill and imprison the Bruins and their friends.
But with each piece they unearth, Kuelack and especially Ramus begin to comprehend why the shards were so feared. Intent on spoiling Kuelack's plans Ramus seeks the Balefires, a powerful sect of witches that the shards have no influence over, but his plans go awry.
It's at this time that the young Aridain Bruin stumbles across what he thinks are four pretty green stones hidden beneath the roots of a tree. However like a moth to a flame the Dark Taal, stalking the surrounding countryside once more, is drawn inexorably to Aridain and the struggle for control of the Firebrand shards ensues....
The thrill, the excitement, the fun, and the emotions are so real in this book. It’s just amazing how the author was able to write such a wonderful book full of live characters and interesting twists and turns. The Shadow and the Shards is a book that rotates its plot to the mystery of the two stones created by the gods in order to maintain balance and harmony. With the Chimera stone which was born of light being forgotten and hidden, this left the world with just the Firebrand stone which is born of darkness ruling over the land for a time until a dragonlord from the North split the Firebrand shards and put an end to the wars and chaos in the land.
The birth of Aridain greatly provoked the dark shadows, including the vile creature called Dark Taal. Aridain was destined to be the savior of the kingdom. However, with his young age and inexperienced skill, the evils are taking advantage of time. Kuelack was one of them who was hungry for power and desperately searching for the Firebrand stones in order to expand his kingdom and control throughout the land. Kuelack’s journey embodied mostly the gist of this book, where he met with severe resistance from the Aymaras and the Bruins.
Overall, this book kept me stuck the whole time wanting to learn more. This book is superb, and the ending was intense, leaving you with a sense of lack. I’m pretty sure the author has prepared another great series to the following series of this book. I can’t wait to read it.
A startling and thought-provoking story about the battle between the forces of darkness and forces of light. This tale is full of adventure, dark creatures, dark magic, and things that bump along the pages.
Aridain is championed by gods, destined to kill the dark creature named Dark Taal and destroy the Firebrand stone which is born of darkness that causes destruction and death throughout the land. However, tides turned aside when the gods decided not to destroy the Firebrand stone. Instead, they ordered the dark Taal to kill Aridain and restore the dark stones. When the news of the Firebrand shards resurfaces, Kuelack and Ramus set on a journey to find the shattered stones in order to gain the power it holds and expand his kingdom. The move of Kuelack made the situation harder for Aridain and his friends to find the Firebrand shard.
The author has created an amazing setting and plot from his own wild imaginations, perfectly taking the readers through time thousands of years ago. It’s surreal, horrifying, and exactly the kind of train wreck you don’t want to see but can’t look away from. I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy dark fantasy adventures/thrillers, or stories of people finding redemption where they least expect it. Be prepared, though. Every lofty, beautiful, and profound moment in this novel is balanced by sheer terror, carnage, and malevolence.
The book, The Shadow and the Shards tells the story of this powerful stone born of darkness thousands of years ago in order to maintain balance and harmony together with the Chimera stone. The gods made these stones accessible to the many races of Aymara. However, the Chimera stone was forgotten and disappeared, leaving the Firebrand stone roaming unfettered throughout the kingdom, bringing chaos and wars. This stone was split into four segments by a warrior from the north and was hidden and forgotten a long time ago.
Many people thought that the stones were myths and people lost their attention to these two powerful stones, but not for Kuelack. When the news of the Firebrand stone resurfaced, he embarked on a journey together with his dragonlord to find the shards to expand his empire and have control over the lands. With Aridain being inexperienced in battle, he, his family, and his friends have to work together in order to stop Kuelack and totally defeat Dark Taal, the dark creature destined to kill Aridain.
From the plot itself, I could tell that this book is phenomenal. The characters were highly developed, and there were a lot of heart-stopping moments. Personally, I love the book and the author, and I’m also intrigued to read the prequel to this one. Highly recommended.
Get ready for a rip-roaring thrill quest based on a dark fantasy theme. You are in for a treat. Thousands of years ago, the gods created two stones namely Chimera and Firebrand stone to maintain balance and harmony. For some time, peace was achieved throughout the land until the Chimera stone which was born of light was forgotten and hidden. This left the Firebrand stone unchecked. Again, wars threatened the lives of Aymara races until a dragonlord in the name of Pellagrin shattered the shards into four segments and was hidden from the people who were hungry for power. But now that the gods created a dark creature named Dark Taal to bring back the Firebrand shards, the whereabouts of the shards resurfaced and attracted Kuelack for its power and set out on a journey to find the shards before anyone could. It’s Aridain’s mission to stop the Dark Taal and Kuelack from their purpose and then destroy the shards before it gets into the wrong hands. This book is book two of the Foundation Stone Series.
Dean Matthew has created a fantasy series like no other. His affinity for dark fantasy and fiction is incomparable. I have thoroughly enjoyed the treat, and I look forward to reading more from this author, especially since he manages to make the ending a bit more hanging, thus signifying that more is to come.
Fantasy lovers should not risk missing out on The Shadow and the Shards, a battle between the forces of light and darkness.
Thousands of years ago, darkness ruled over the world. There was no balance and harmony, so the gods created two shards in order to bring balance and peace. The first one is the firebrand stone which was born of darkness, and the chimera stone which was born of light. However, the Chimera stone was forgotten and became hidden. This left the Firebrand stone in power, and once again, war broke out in all the lands until a warrior from the north split the dark stone into four segments. This hid the presence of Firebrand stone until people saw it as a myth. But not for Kuelack, who desperately seeks the Firebrand stones by the influence of the shadow also. His goal is to possess the power that the Firebrand has and rule over the lands. The protagonist Aridain Bruin is still young and is unfit for combat. Will he be able to defeat his evil uncle, especially without the Chimera stone with him? I can’t wait to read the next chapters as this book ends at a scene where Kuelack was hypnotized by the dark shadow in the reflection.
Intense and terrifying tale blended with friendship and philia love. It encapsulates the ferocity and sorrow of the Aymara races, particularly the kingdom of Durbah, as well as the neighboring lands and kingdoms after the Chimera stone was forgotten and hidden while the Firebrand stone, which possesses dark magic, resurfaced. The land was once again terrorized with trepidation by the dark forces of evil. This book narrates the journey of Aridain to find the Firebrand shards before his evil uncle Kuelack finds them. While on his crusade to destroy the Firebrand shards, he was met with a lot of challenges including the presence of Dark Taal and the wife of Kuelack who is on a campaign to imprison or kill the Bruins. This book is well on dark fantasy, with a bit of gore. Kuelack was great in the story, embracing his awful personality, who was always hungry for power. Even if you have not read the first book of the Stone Series, this one is detailed and descriptive. Following the whole story isn’t that difficult. This book is one to savor every sentence of.
There are a lot of books that have piqued my interest and made me really invested in the stories that they entail, but this one is by far the best when it comes to upholding what the story wants to uphold.
The Shadow and the Shards is an incredible book that consists of dark fantasy with a twist of dark magic and power, a battle of supremacy and control, and betrayal. I love the part where the book intricately foreshadows the previous book to guide the readers to what is happening now and also provides suspense and thrill to what is going to happen next, just like Kuelack’s nightmare and flashbacks of his childhood days. Here, you would truly understand how he became the villain of the story and betrayed the Bruins. His hunger for power increases, especially after hearing the whereabouts of the Firebrand shards. This book is a breath of fresh air, something that is unique with a vibe of Lord of the Rings. I can’t help but feel euphoric for having read this incredible book by Dean Matthew.
What does it really mean to say darkness and light? A long time ago, the gods made two stones to secure balance and harmony throughout the land. The first one, which is the Chimera stone, was born of light, and the second one was born of darkness, the Firebrand stone. As time went by, the Chimera stone was forgotten. Wars and evil devastated the peaceful life of Durbah and the rest of the Aymara. A dragonlord from the North that goes by the name of Pellagrin divided the Firebrand stone into four segments and hid it from the sight of the hungry for power people. However, a rumor of the whereabouts of the shards resurfaced and thus gained the attention of the evil wizards, including Kuelack, Aridain’s uncle. Will Aridain, the chosen one, be able to stop Kuelack, kill Dark Taal, and ultimately destroy the Firebrand shards? I’m not going to spoil anything to the readers. I’ll let them find out and discover.
I have no regrets about taking my time reading this magnificent book. Totally amazing!
A twisting, swirling, maelstrom of an epically fantastic fantasy adventure. In the land of Durbah, thousands of years ago, the gods made the Firebrand stone and Chimera stone in order to maintain balance and harmony. The Firebrand stone was born of darkness, and the Chimera stone was born of light. As time went by, the Chimera stone was forgotten and disappeared. The Firebrand stone's evil was unleashed, and the world was devastated by war until a certain powerful warrior from the north broke the stone into four pieces and hid them from the people.
Now, however, Kuelack, Aridain’s evil uncle, is on the search to find these Firebrand shards to gain power and control over the region. This chapter focused on Kuelack’s wicked journey, willing to do anything to have his hands with the stones. Influenced by the dark shadow, he is now more determined than ever. The future of their land and their school is at stake especially now that Aridain is still young and is not yet ready for combat. Truly mesmerizing work of art!
Dean Matthew’s The Shadow and the Shards is not your ordinary mainstream epic fantasy adventure. A lot more than that, it is a compelling story of magic, love, survival, and seeing more than meets the eye. The plot, as well as the vivid narrations, made me ponder on the implications of how some themes in the story are actually relevant to our present-day society. Maybe not blatantly, but they are definitely there. I shuddered at the thought of how people gain power in order to take advantage of the weak. Even though we don’t have the Chimera stone and the Firebrand stone in the real world, people become powerful with their wealth and position in the government. And using these things could totally change the outcome of our world. Kuelack, for one, is an example of a person who is desperately hungry for power due to greed. The author’s writing has the power to instill sympathy and awareness into the readers with its vividness and detail.
Dean Matthew thoroughly understands the importance of good and evil and how these aspects could affect our world as we know it when altered in the wrong way. As time went by, legend has it that the Chimera stone was hidden and forgotten, and the Firebrand stone resurfaced and was divided into four segments. But not everyone was sold into the idea that the Firebrand stone is real. Many people thought that this was only a myth. However, Aridain’s evil uncle embarked on a journey to find Firebrand shards for power, control, and dominance. The prophecy foretold that only Aridain could stop his uncle, but Aridain is not yet ready for battle, and he is still too young. Will the Kingdom of Durbah and the neighboring cities be able to maintain peace now that the shadow has full control over Kuelack and that Kuelack has almost found the shards? Personally, I really like this book, and the story is a page-turner. I’m looking forward to reading more of Dean Matthew.
How dangerous would it be if a kingdom is ruled by an oppressor? Violence and chaos become inevitable. Upon reaching the last part of the book, I took it wholeheartedly. I knew that deep in Kuelack’s heart, there is something lurking inside, a shadow from the deep who was as hungry as he of the Firebrand shards. It was fortunate that Aridain had the shard although he was trying his best to contain it. I applaud Aridain’s character. He symbolizes hope to the entire kingdom despite his young age. He has the blood of a warrior, never backing down from any fight and always standing up for what is right. I would be happy to give this book a five out of five stars rating. It’s undoubtedly a masterpiece with a Harry Potter vibe judging from the setting, the plot, the wizard school, and the shards. But this one has its own distinct characteristics that separate it from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. I’m pretty sure you’ll fall in love with the characters as much as I do.
The Shadow and the Shards is a kind of book that will fill your imagination with dark magic and power. There are a couple of reasons why I like this book so much. Firstly, the characters were amusing and interesting to read. The protagonist and the antagonist truly lived up to their personality. Aridain manifested bravery and hope with the Aymara races and the kingdom Durbah, while Kuelack, together with Dark Taal, resonates fear and power that would truly scare the heck out of you. Secondly, the plot is intense. I had the time of my life reading the ebbs and flows of the book. Learning about the crusade of Kuelack and the dark shadow that lurked behind his shadows, and also the sleeping Dark Taal awaiting the right time to kill Aridain is mesmerizing. It left me wanting and anticipating what was going to happen next. Lastly, there’s nothing that I disliked about the book. This is how awesome the book is. I couldn’t recommend the book enough.
Right from the start, my amazement and expectation exceeded their peak. Themed with Dark Fantasy, this book is hard to put down. How would you save the people and the land from the dark creature named Dark Taal and from an evil sorcerer named Kuelack, who happened to be the protagonist’s uncle? Aridain is born with immense power and was prophesied by the witches to defeat Dark Taal. However, he is too young and inexperienced to face off against this powerful monster who is waiting patiently to take his chance to kill Aridain first. The entire Aymara race which consists of the lands of Calabash, Chondite, Durbah, Navar, Srinagar, Turkana, and Zapata is in danger after learning that the death of Almagest was no accident. The entire Pellagrin School of Magic was dumbfounded and left scared. It was a captivating read. I honestly had a good time learning all the places, the characters, and the entire plot itself.
One thing I could say is that this book is exceptionally inspiring and intense. The Shadow and the Shards is a book filled with dark magic and fantasy. It’s just simply mesmerizing to know once you get the whole gist of the book. For one, this book has a lot of characters, events, things, and places to remember. Thanks to the intricate introduction, maps, and the glossary, I found it very helpful in following the plot and the characters. Even if you have not read the very first book of this series, this one is not hard to follow. Starting with intense chapters with nice usage of words, I found this book hard to put down. Almagest had been assassinated, the great wizard of Pellagrin School of Magic. The news spread like wildfire scaring the people of Durbah. What will Aridain do? He’s too young, inexperienced, and obviously not yet ready for battle. Engaging and interesting plot, this book is surely one of the best books I’ve ever read.
Despite being an avid reader, I have always been hesitant to read novels that are too heavily based on magic and power. As someone who reads in order for spirituality and values, I felt that these types of novels are too close to being overly fictional. But at the recommendation of a friend, I ventured to read The Shadow and the Shards, and I’ve got to admit, I was utterly impressed.
This book is written mostly with magical events, creatures, and things with just the right amount of dramatics and excitement to keep me captivated and entertained without being overbearing. I love the characters as well. Aridain, the main character, was so much interesting to read, and I felt a deep sense of connection, especially since he is brave despite his age and capabilities. Kuelack too, the main antagonist of the story, was also very captivating to read. His character matches his dark personality as being the villain. This book now has a special place in my heart.
This dark fantasy-inspired tale of bravery and heroism is not just a book. It’s an adventure. Aridain grew up to be loved by the gods, destined to destroy the firebrand stone and kill the fiercest creature called Dark Taal. However, at his young age, his inexperienced skills in combat made him unprepared for what was to come. Time is short. An evil wizard is now on a journey to take the shards and possess their power while his wife too is on a campaign to kill him and his families and friends. The future of the Aymara races is in great danger. Even with Aridain's incomparable power, it couldn’t contain the dark magic of the firebrand stone. Discover the adventure and how Aridain survived all the threats that loomed in the dark.
The Shadow and the Shard is the second book of the Foundation Stone Series by Dean Matthew. And like its predecessor, it begins and ends with intense and sensational scenes.
This book is one of the best fiction fantasy series on the shelf. You would be surprised at how well the author crafted the plot and blended the characters into the plot and taking you into the author’s wild imagination of darkness and light. I love how the author put everything into the right places, making everything make sense. Although the book has a lot of characters, places, events, and things to follow and remember, I find it without a problem. The map at the beginning and the glossary in the end truly help a lot to get to know the setting and the characters. If you haven’t read book 1 of the series, I suggest not skipping the introduction, the map, and the glossary in the end before delving into the story.
It’s a whole new experience with the same amount of intensity and thrill that you are looking for in a fantasy book. It exceeded my expectations, and I highly suggest reading it and letting it fascinate you.
Have you been so afraid already for the things that have happened or might have happened? Or perhaps have you been stuck in a situation where everything seemed hopeless? This book is right for you. It will take you into an epic dark fantasy adventure that would have your heart-stopping with thrill and excitement. Albeit the theme is based on darkness, it’s something that one needs to read to get inspired. No matter how dark the world is, there’s always light. We just need to find it.
These fascinating insights are what the readers will be able to read. Starting from the journey of Kuelack, a dark wizard who is hungry for the power of the darkness from the Firebrand shards, to the journey of Aridain, one that is destined to kill Dark Taal and destroy the Firebrand shards. There are a lot of twists and turns as you go along with the pages that for sure would leave you with aha-moments. Try reading it to yourself. Highly recommended!
Dean Matthew writes in a mesmerizing style that keeps the readers’ eyes glued to the page and their souls bonded to the characters. Perhaps the fact that it covers so many suspenseful and exciting scenes has some part in the magic, but the author’s writing style is surely the main star for me. I actually found myself so engrossed in the story that, before I knew it, my days had become so filled with the exhilaration it brought to me, to the point where I felt satisfied after finishing the whole book. This one is perfect for regular readers who love to spend their free days just reading and be taken away by the wild imagination of the author. I’m sure you’re not going to regret it.
The Shadow and the Shards is the type of plot that brings a myriad of fulfilling experiences to its readers. It is definitely something that you would want to take your time reading to savor all the amazing characters, scenes, and values it brings. Great read!

A marvelous epic quest that fits right in with the myths and legends. Durbah and the neighboring lands are facing great dangers in a matter of time. Aridain is still young and isn’t ready yet to engage in a magical battle with his evil uncle Kuelack. However, with the Firebrand stone not yet found, they still had time to make a competition quest with Kuelack and his comrade Ramus. But with Gradine giving them difficult times, will they be able to contain the Firebrand stone before it's too late? This epic fantasy storyline is deftly tied into the bigger tale of the two stones. I absolutely adored how the author incorporated characters with different personalities. I couldn’t wait to find out if Aridain and his friends would be able to defeat Kuelack once Kuelack gets hold of the firebrand stones.

Absolutely electrifying! I don’t have the confidence to find the right words that could describe confidence to find the right words that could describe how big of an impact this fantasy novel had on me. It may have been a while since I finished reading, but the thrumming of my veins and the thumping of my heart still have not lessened every time I remember the story and its most memorable scenes. Dean Matthew’s writing was incredibly skillful and manipulative, dragging me around his world on an adventure nothing short of tumultuous, especially the part where Aridain found the shards. This brought more pressure to the climax of the story knowing that his evil uncle can’t wait to put his hands on the shards in order to gain power and glory. In order to maintain balance and harmony, how will Aridain and his friends win the battle between good and evil?
An absolutely phenomenal book to read and spend time with. Dean Matthew writes with passion and intensity, keeping the book engaging and interesting. I finished reading this book in a matter of days. And to be honest, this one is hard to put down. With the intense battle of dark and light and the valiant search for the missing shards, Aridain and his companion knew that if these shards were subjected to the wrong hands, it could unleash a devastating effect that could potentially end balance and harmony all throughout the land. The conversations and the way the author presented the fantasy never cease to amaze someone like me who just read this novel without having the knowledge of the prequel. It’s easy to understand and follow the events and the characters. If you are looking for a book that would engage you in deep magic and battle, this one's for you.
The Shadow and the Shards’ characters are outstanding. Each one is so well-thought-out and well-developed. The story is about power, dark magic, dominance, and light as a whole. Not to mention the heart-stopping chase and intense conversations between characters, which had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Aridain takes on a journey when also learning that his evil uncle Kuelack is embarked on a journey on its own to find the Firebrand shards. What I love the most about the book is that it's fast-paced, and the characters are pretty much alive. I was totally captivated by Aridain and his family’s courage to fight off the evil Kuelack and Gradine. It was one amazing read, and I can’t wait to read the next book of this series. This one is a book I would definitely share with others.
I’ve been quite fortunate in that the books I’ve been reading recently have been excellent. The novel, The Shadow and the Shards, is no different. Where do I even start? To begin with, the story piqued all of my senses. I was left satisfied, happy, and content. The author does a fantastic job of putting the reader in the characters' shoes, especially Aridain’s.
Although the book is about 260 pages long, I was completely engrossed in the tale and the characters, and I couldn’t put it down! As a result of his encounter, which Aridain thought could be the Firebrand shards, I needed to find out what was going on with Kuelack learning that he is the story's antagonist. I couldn’t wait for when Kuelack and Aridain would come face to face and battle against each other. Overall, I find this book an amazing one to spend your free time with.
One of the best fantasy novels I’ve read in a long time. This piece is undoubtedly a page-turner, and because it flows well and is fast-paced, I have nothing against the author other than high admiration and praise. Dean Matthew is a fine writer. He knows how to leave his readers utterly speechless. The plot was amazing, the characters were very intriguing, and the resolution was fulfilling. When the rumors of the Firebrand shards resurfaced, Kuelack got devilishly excited to get hold of these shards for power and dominance. After learning that these shards hold great power, he desperately sought out on a journey to find them. On the other hand, Gradine also embarked on a trip to kill and imprison the Bruins and his friends. I’m delighted to give this book a five out of five stars. It was a great read!
One of the most important things that a book needs to have is the ability to use every part of it to the story’s advantage and lure the attention of the readers - perfectly trapping them in the world created by the author. Dean Matthew was able to achieve such a feat with his book, The Shadow and the Shards. From the cover picture, all the way to the last page, every part of the book was used to its maximum potential to draw the readers into the whirlwind of excitement, learnings, realizations, and overall emotions the story presents.
Such an amazing book for fantasy adventure enthusiasts. Discover how Aridain Bruin discovered the secret of the shards yet was unable to contain its power. Will he be able to stop his evil uncle Kuelack from the dark shadow from getting hold of the Firebrand shard when the time comes? I had the time of my life reading this book! Highly recommended.
The Shadow and the Shards perfectly caught my attention to so many adventurous events, characters, creatures, and power. I never read the prequel of this book. However, I didn’t have a hard time following the story because it was all well arranged and written by the author, and I loved it. Peace reigns for a while in the land of Durban and the surrounding lands after the banishment of these green stones, which hold great dark magic. But the question is, how long would peace last that now Aridain’s uncle. Kuelack is now on his journey to find the firebrand stones after hearing their whereabouts. Will Britain be able to stop him? I’m not going to spoil anything. I’ll let the readers find out and discover for themselves the amazing series of events following the death of Almagest.
I am glad to give this book a five out of five stars. Worth the reading! I love it.
