Paper Coffins

Rate this book
My father always said trust was like a paper coffin.
One naked flame and it was gone.
I didn’t know how right he was until he died, and I was resurrected.

I thought I was brought back to roam the world in his wake, stronger and fiercer than he ever knew possible, but that was only the start of the lie.

The devil doesn’t need light to shine, I just needed a match and a fuse.

-

There are three things you can be certain of in this life:
* We are born.
* We will die.
* People lie.

That last one’s the most complex matter of the three. Lies were what made me, shaped me, and ultimately destroyed me.

I thought I was the devil in this story, but I was yet to meet my match.
And she’s about to rip this world apart.

-

What the actual F just happened?!

I have little to no words to explain the feelings in my heart and mind right now.

I read an ARC of Paper Coffins by Kirsty-Anne Still, who not only is an incredible woman, artist, designer she is also a fantastic author (I know, superwoman right?)

There is just a way she writes, that is all consuming, gut wrenching and filthy all at the same time.

I was nervous to read this book, mainly because I adore Mafia/Mob erotic romance soooo much, but Kirsty blew it out of the park by a long shot.

The story is thrilling, it draws you in, hooks you and at the end, leaves you bereft for the world you had just indulged in. When I say you're not ready for this book, I bloody mean it. You won't know what has hit you!!

Let's talk characters!

Natalia and Beck are end game! They are toxic yet perfect. They bounce off each other, with outstanding chemistry and insanely steamy moments together. Fighting to find the truth and the love they once had, takes you on a whirlwind journey.

Hold tight, because it will get crazy, emotional and brutal. You won't want to miss this read.

1Click it now!! One of my top reads of 2022 and perhaps ever!!!

Well done Miss Still, smashed it to pieces as always 👏

Five well deserved stars

I can NOT contemplate what the fuck just happened in this book. My mind is blown and I…well I’m an absolute mess right now.

I’ve been sat here for the past half an hour with tears falling down my face…christ this book was something else.

It’s been a long LONG while since we’ve been given a new Kirsty-Anne Still book and man did I forget just hard this woman goes with her books.

Even though it’s been a while this authors writing has only gotten better. The story flows so easily, the characters were written so amazingly that they were brought to life. It felt like you were there, experiencing ever emotion they did. It was a ride for sure.

She’s an absolute queen at the dark reads, I knew..I just knew something was going to happen..knew all hell would break loose and I wasn’t wrong..oh I wasn’t. Shit went down repeatedly and I am shook to the core.

These two characters thrive on hating the other. They’ve got a past, a dark past that was once full of them loving one another but now, after 7 years there’s a whole lot of hate for each other and as the story unfolds and the cracks start to show we see just how different each of their stories are and the repercussions of each story.

Natalia and Beck are everything I love about dark romance. They’re fierce and won’t second guess harming a person to get their own way. They’re strong and resilient even towards each other.

Paper Coffins is deliciously dark and addictive. It’s twisted and shocking and it’ll have you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting, sorry NEEDING more.

I don’t know how this book got such great reviews, but I should know by now never to trust reviews.

While the writing is great, the story does not match the writing. The monologue tells of a girl with a lot of anger and strength, but she’s nothing like that . She gets beat and outmatched over and over by every man . Andreas, Alistair and Beckett . Over and over she’s bested and all we read is how she’s strong, angry and out to take the power back . Not once, did she have a plan. She’s as stupid as they come. Who continues to love a man who’s just as complicit as his evil father ? And him? His stupidity is beyond belief . He is so dumb that he chose not to investigate. He acts and talks like an alpha, but he’s dumber than a doorknob . How many times has he not been able to protect someone he claims to love? Pathetic .

I get so sick of the monologue full of dumb , self - assessment.. it was ridiculous.

The ending ?? Yah .. only goes to prove how stupid they both are.

I have read a lot of Kirsty's work..... maybe all of it and she never ever fails to surprise me with her writing and her growth. Every book I read I fall more in love with her mind and her writing and Paper Coffins is no exception. It's a story that will keep every reader hooked and wanting more. And for now, that's all anyone is getting.

This is my first book by Kirsty-Anne Still and I've come away with mixed feelings. It most definitely shows promise: the writing and storytelling were great, providing an emotional rollercoaster which engrossed me till the very end, and I was glad of a darker, non-traditional 'HEA' - let's be honest though and call a spade a spade, the ending makes it more of a Shakespearean tragedy than a typical romance (to me, it read like an interesting mix of "Romeo and Juliet"'s love story and the devious, crown-stealing plot from "Hamlet").

However, despite the many positive aspects, I was left thirsty for more. More information, more closure and more mafia elements. Although this is sold as a mafia romance and does present elements of it, I would've loved for more of that in the story. Of course, the whole reason for Natalia returning is to claim her father's criminal empire, but otherwise, there is little to do with organised crime as most of the book is focused on the characters' stories. In my opinion, a bit more emphasis on the mafia side of the plot would've been a welcome addition to cut through the MCs' sometimes repetitive inner monologues about how much they hate/love each other.

My biggest issue, though, was definitely the incomplete or implausible explanations, which left me with quite a few remaining questions, such as
- Natalia. I'm just confused by her character. She was supposed to be smart and strategic, and I liked her snark, but did she even have a plan for taking back her throne? We are never explicitly told what she did or where she was during her 7 year exile, but we do know she was preparing her return. How is she then only ever outmatched by men and blindsided by unexpected events!? You'd expect that after 7 years of planning, she'd be more prepared and have some semblance of a plan.

- Secondly, how can there ever even be a doubt as to whether or not Beckett would recognise Natalia. This is a big one for me, as she assumes he wouldn't and proceeds accordingly, but she's only been gone seven bloody years. SEVEN. YEARS. And not seven years from a baby/toddler to child/young teen, where the facial features dramatically change, but seven years from ages 23 to 30. Adults don't change much during these years. At first, when he didn't spot her at the Palace and didn't seem to recognise her at the hotel bar, I thought she might've had plastic surgery or worn something to alter her appearance, and was waiting for the other shoe to drop... nope. So why would she ever conceivably assume he wouldn't identify her, and why does Beckett not immediately realise it was her at the Palace, like Sebastian did? Completely ridiculous

- Thirdly, how in the world does Beckett not notice that Natalia has been hit in the face after her attempted rape?!!!? She had a bleeding and split lip, as well as red marks and presumably swelling, and Alistair had scratches down his face, but Beck doesn't see any of it... Come on. Even when he has his face right in front of hers the next day and at the event, he still doesn't realise. The book quickly addresses it by claiming that he didn't notice or that her make-up covered it, but a split lip is pretty obvious and cannot be hidden with make-up. It's absurd.

- Finally, I have so many more questions relating to Natalia's father. Why did he never try to find Natalia? He knew she was pregnant and wasn't happy about an out-of-wedlock child, but he hadn't disowned her for that, so I'm having trouble believing he would disown her for having an abortion. Also, he couldn't have renounced her, otherwise she wouldn't have been his heir and inherited his billions. So if he didn't forsake her, then why wouldn't he find her? He would've surely had the resources, especially as he was the one who was paying Vinnie to protect her. Or did he stop paying Vinnie? In that case, was Natalia paying Vinnie? With what money? Did she earn her own money to build her army (how!?) or was she using her father's? If she was, then he could've traced her using the money trail and found her. So I just don't understand why Nicolas didn't search for Natalia, when it's clearly stated that he missed her. Or if he did look for her, then I find it implausible that he couldn't find her. So many unanswered questions.

But all in all, despite the plot having a few holes, it was an enjoyable and engrossing book which I read pretty much in one sitting. I would definitely recommend it if you're in the mood for a dark enemies to lovers romance-tragedy.

What a ride! Best book I've ever read!

Whiplash. Emotional whiplash.
That's the only way I can describe what just happened.

Whilst I've been meaning to read things by this author for a VERY long time, shamefully long if we're honest, I'm both kicking myself for waiting so long, but also kinda glad because it feels like she just ripped my heart through my mouth, threw it in a load of salt and then burned it for good measure.

What. A. Book.

There's not much I can say, because for one, I'm reeling after the ending, for two, I've been awake since the early hours thanks to a sleepless child and words are failing me. But perhaps, my real reason is because whatever I do say is likely to pale in comparison to the experience of reading this book for the first time, and that is something everyone really needs to do.

I could praise characters—they are all amazing, even the shitty ones who do the dirty on your favourites. I could praise the way it's written, as there are some beautiful quotes throughout. I could praise the rollercoaster it took me on. But none of my words will do it justice.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best books I've ever read. Not just the best this year (which it is), or this decade. Best ever, and I've read some real heavy hitters.

Now where are those magic amnesia pills, because by God do I want to do that all over again for the first time!

A Dark Mafia/gang Romance

I needed a day to finalise my thoughts, enough that I wouldn’t give anything away, that’s tricky with this book especially as I want to shout from the rafters about what happens, but oh what a book !

Kirsty-Anne Still has a way with words and story telling that really does draw you in. Once I was in, I found it hard to put down as the twist and turns of the plot kept on coming !

Trust is like a paper coffin, once it’s gone you can never get it back ! Or can you if you try hard enough, or was it that the trust wasn’t really gone ?

The main story line of this book follows Natalia and Beck as they come together with hate and a tragedy. As the story unfolds you realise there’s another character emerging and he takes centre stage too !

This is dark and twisted romance, with everything you need and everything you don’t, and when I say dark there’s definitely some moments that hinge on the darker side of dark ! But they make the book work and fit in to the story line with ease ! Just be warned .

Anyhow ! I loved it, loved that the author has come back with conviction ! And I can’t wait to see where she goes next.

HOLY 😳😳😳 I am going to do this review without giving too much away. This book is twisted, it's dark, it isn't a typical mafia romance. Proceed with a bit of caution.

This is the first book I've read by Kirsty-Anne Still, so I went in only knowing that it was a dark mafia book. Natalia is feisty and well, some call her a psychopath, which isn't too far from the truth. Beckett is crazy, especially for Natalia.

These two are explosive together. They are back in each other's lives after a tragedy. Once they are back together, the secrets and lies start pouring out. I had moments in this book where I felt so strongly for what Talia was going through and what she went through.

I do not want to give too much away, but it isn't a light book and some elements are heavy. Very heavy. Overall, I did love the book and I loved Talia and Beck, even when they said they hated each other...

Kirsty Anne Still does a very good job with her new standalone, Paper Coffins. Told from multiple POVs, Natalia has returned to London to take her place as the head of The Company, only to find that the man she’s loved for a majority of her life, Beckett, has taken on that role.

Torn apart seven years earlier, by secrets and lies, you’ll wonder if they can find their way back to each other. In a story where even allies can be enemies, you will wonder who you can really trust. Who will survive when the truth comes out?

Natalia is a snarky heroine who uses past hurts to fuel her desire to be on top. Beckett is a typical alphahole. The book will not end with a traditional HEA. If you’re looking for a good slow-burn book with lots of mysteries and secrets, definitely read this.

Wow

This book was amazing until the last chapter.

I’m still giving it five stars because it was incredibly well written and I did really enjoy most of the book. I loved Natalia and Beckett and watching them overcome all the insane odds against them.

But I can’t do endings like that. I won’t give anything away, but just no. I get that it’s a dark romance but that ending was just ugh. I hated it. 😭😭😭😭

But as I said before, it was well written and I couldn’t put it down. I read through it so fast.

So if you’re down with dark books and uh possibly upsetting endings, this book is for you!

Where to start with this amazing read that has twists and turns in the dark life of mafia families. Kirsty Anne Still never fails to draw you in to her stories so much you actually feel like you are there living it with them. Absolutely amazing characters that you will fall in love with, some you will have and some you will pity. The plot will certainly take you on a journey that will have highs and lows and leave you emotional. This is a MUST READ on anybody's list.

I'm so pissed right bow. Why the hell would you classify this as a romance when it us clearly a f*@king tragedy. The book was great but I hat being lied to and you lied when you classified this as a romance. I just wasted hours of my life for a sh!tty ending. I'm so mad right now!!!! Why do authors lie to readers? Tell me it's a tragedy up front and I won't waste my time readying it. Never again will I read your books!

Toxically delicious and dark, equal parts lust and hatred, this is a dark book which keeps you guessing. Told from dual POV, I was drawn to the brutally broken Natalia and Beckett. The dual POV really worked, emphasising the dominance struggle, twists and impact, as secrets were unveiled with devastating consequences. But wow! I was not prepared for that ending!!!

If you like a dark twisted romance check this out but be prepared this does not end with a traditional HEA!

Holy. Freaking. Wow.

This is hands down the best book I've read this year.

Be warned, though. This isn't your light, fluffy read. This is dark romance as its finest.

It's twisty. It's surprising.

It. Is. Everything.

Kirsty-Anne Still is a master of weaving beautiful words and creating suspense that will have you unable to put this book down until you reach the end.

A different kind of love

The first bit had a lot of unanswered questions as the story slowly unfolded. But once it did, it took off running. It was dark, steamy, sexy, and pushed the envelope in all the right places. It did not end how I expected, but the ending was 100% the most fitting ending ever.

I finished this book only for it to remind me of a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet and I hate that story…so at the end I was underwhelmed. I need me HEA

There were aspects of the book I liked.
I liked the love/hate between the main characters. I however hated the entire concept of manipulation and FMC unwilling to ever be honest about what happened to her.
