The Mystery of Identity

Rate this book
Identity means being the same and being different. It is a one-word oxymoron. How on earth can the concept make sense? This brilliant exposition of the question goes—by way of literature, philosophy, and psychology—to show that it can only be answered metaphysically. Identity is the mystery at the heart of creation, and, ultimately, the mystery of its Creator. Personal anxieties about who we are and political tensions about who others are melt before the radiance of God’s truth. In that truth we find our true selves, as images of the unimaginable. This book guides the reader through our culture’s concerns about identity and along the spiritual path that leads to the receiving of “a white stone, with a new name written on it that no one knows except the one who receives it.”

Not an easy book to read. But who said growing was easy?

This book spoke directly to the heart of my struggles with identity over this past year. I felt as though I were reading my own thoughts. A wonderful book that opens you up to truly loving relationships. The secret is simple: you are born of the divine energy that formed the stars and all the cosmos, and so am I. We are born of the same being. But we are not the same. “We’re one, but we’re not the same,” to quote Bono in the U2 song One.

Just as G-d is the ultimate divine Other, separate to us but the source of our being, so we are distinct from one another, while our being is the same. Wow.

Welcome to life and I hope you have a good pilgrimage on this good Earth.

Best wishes,

Beni

With the debate raging in the Western world over various identity crisis I thought it might be interesting to read a different perspective on these things... It was although this book takes a long time to say things that could probably have been dealt with in 1 chapter.

The style reminds me of listening to Rowan Williams in interview and it was not surprising to see him cited a few times in this book.

R.e the identity crisis I mention earlier - this book does not go into those specifically but it gives a Christian perspective on where we should look for our identity though it can be a never ending journey!
