The Mammals of Texas

William B. Davis and David J. Schmidly bring together over seventy years of experience in the study of Texas mammals. A completely revised and updated version of Davis' classic text, which was first published in 1947, The Mammals of Texas is a perennial favorite, going through four reprints and revisions during the past forty-seven years. A basic reference for the wildlife enthusiast, the book contains information on the distribution, physical characteristics, and life histories of 181 species of Texas mammals. Included are photographs, a comprehensive set of distribution maps, and identification keys to the orders and species of mammals found in Texas.

I found this field guide very informative and specific. The authors use the latest scientific literature and are very clear about when they are providing a best guess and when there is definite proof. The beginning reads like a journal article in a scientific publication and gives a lot of information about mammals in general and conservation issues facing them. The biodiversity of mammals in different parts of the state is also discussed. Each Order of the Class Mammalia is described in general and then each species found in Texas is described physically, the range is described, and the habits of the species are discussed in detail. Some species have several pages of discussion since they are more studied while others are given a very brief description. The only thing that could have improved the book is including pictures in color rather than black and white.
