മുംബൈയിലെ കാൽക്കർ സഹോദരന്മാരുടെ തിരോധാനത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അന്വേഷിക്കാൻ അവരുടെ അമ്മ പ്രിയംവദ കാൽക്കർ പോലീസ് സഹായം തേടുന്നു. അവരുടെ ഉദാസീനത മനസ്സിലാക്കി സമാന്തരമായ അന്വേഷണത്തിനു ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന അവരെ സി.ബി.ഐ. ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായ ജിതേന്ദ്രകാശ്യപ് പുജാരയാണ് പണ്ട്, സി.ബി.ഐ.യിൽനിന്ന് രാജിവച്ചുപോയ ശിവശങ്കർ പെരുമാളിനടുത്തേയ്ക്കയയ്ക്കുന്നത്. പാലക്കാട്ടെത്തിയ പ്രിയംവദ കാൽക്കറിൽനിന്നു വിവരങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്ന പെരുമാൾ ആ അമ്മയുടെ നിസ്സഹായതയുടെ മുന്നിൽ നിവൃത്തിയില്ലാതെ, ഒരു സ്വകാര്യകുറ്റാന്വേഷകനാകാൻ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു. ആ കേസ് പെരുമാളിനെ ഒരു സ്വകാര്യകുറ്റാന്വേഷകനാക്കിമാറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തു.

The character of Perumaal interesting. The plot itself is intriguing and at times hold our breathe in custody. The language at times and the word choices made the reader in me do a double take, as at some places the writing was heavily reminiscent of the crime thriller stories of 90's by authors like Kottayam Pushpanath.

Some descriptions regarding rape and sexual abuse seems to border on erotic descriptions. The terms used in regards to female characters are at times misogynistic. But these can be attributed to the time period the novel was actually written in.

Perumal is at times like a superhuman (a typical south indian action hero cop!) and the author's promise in the preface that this is a different detective from what malayalam literature has seen till now is only partially true as he seems to be heavily leaning towards the likes of Detective Pushparaj and his contemporaries.

At the end of the day I am ready to try the other books in the series as my friend fid warne this is the weakest book of the series.

അടുത്തിടെ മലയാളത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായ ക്രൈം ഫിക്ഷൻ തരംഗത്തിൽ Personally ഏറ്റവും നിലവാരം പുലർത്തുന്നവയായി തോന്നിയത് അൻവർ അബ്ദുള്ളയുടെ നോവലുകളാണ്. പുള്ളിയുടെ പെരുമാൾ സീരീസിലെ ആദ്യത്തേതും, പൊതുവേ കൂട്ടത്തിലെ weakest എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് കേട്ടിട്ടുള്ളതും City of M ആയിരുന്നു. ഞാൻ വായിച്ച എഡിഷനിൽ, നോവൽ ആദ്യമായി ഇറങ്ങിയ കാലത്തിൻ്റേതായ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ (like കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ പരിജ്ഞാനം, സദാചാരം തുടങ്ങിയ ടോപിക്സിൽ നോവലിൽ കടന്നു വരുന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരൻ്റെ കമൻ്ററി) നിഴലിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അതിനോടൊന്ന് കണ്ണടച്ചപ്പോൾ അവസാന അധ്യായത്തിന് തൊട്ടുമുൻപുവരെയും അത്യാവശ്യം ത്രില്ലടിപ്പിച്ച ഒരു വായനാനുഭവം തന്നെ എനിക്ക് ലഭിച്ചു. Crime thriller എന്നതിലുപരി FIR, The Tiger തുടങ്ങിയ സുരേഷ് ഗോപി ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ ചുവയാണ് നോവലിനുള്ളത്. ക്ലൈമാക്സിൽ SN സ്വാമിയുടെ നല്ല കാലത്തെ സിനിമകളിലേത് പോലൊരു twist കിട്ടിയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ എനിക്ക് പെരുമാൾ സീരീസിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഇഷ്ടപെട്ട നോവലായി ഇത് മാറിയേനെ (1980 വായിച്ചിട്ടില്ല) 😂

നല്ല നിലവാരം പുലർത്തുന്ന ഒരു ഡിറ്റക്റ്റീവ് നോവൽ. അൻവർ അബ്ദുള്ളയുടെ ഞാൻ വായിക്കുന്ന ആദ്യ നോവൽ കൂടിയാണ് ദ സിറ്റി ഓഫ് എം. വായനകഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ഒരുകാര്യം കൂടെ ഉറപ്പിച്ചു, ബാക്കിയുള്ള പുസ്തകങ്ങളും വായിക്കും എന്ന്. (1980 ഒരുപാട് തവണ കൈയ്യിൽ എടുത്ത ശേഷം മാറ്റി വെച്ചതാണ്, അതിൽ ഇപ്പോൾ ദുഃഖം തോന്നുന്നു).

മുംബൈ നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്നും കാണാതെയാകുന്ന സഹോദരങ്ങളെ സംബന്ധിച്ചാണ് കഥ മുൻപോട്ട് പോകുന്നത്. ഒരുമാതിരി കാര്യങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം കണക്ടഡ് ആണെങ്കിലും അവസാനം ഒന്ന് രണ്ടു സംശയങ്ങൾ ബാക്കി നിന്നു. ഫൈറ്റ് സീനുകൾ പലപ്പോളും ഒരു സിനിമയുടെ ലെവെലിലേക്ക് പോയെങ്കിലും വായനയെ മടുപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒന്നായിരുന്നില്ല, കാരണം നായകൻ എങ്ങനെയെങ്കിലും വിജയിക്കണമല്ലോ.
