What is Philosophy?: An Introduction

Rate this book
It is difficult to see any common factors underlying all the different philosophies and movements of philosophy. The so-called 'great philosophers' seem to have little in common with each other. The history of western philosophy features a bewildering variety of philosophical movements that pop up from nowhere. Philosophy itself seems to be an unfathomable subject that applies everywhere and nowhere. This book makes sense of all these disparities and confusions. What is Philosophy? shows the importance of philosophy in our thoughts and our lives. It also makes clear the role that philosophy has played in making western culture so dominant in the early 21st century. I was unfortunately unable to finish this book before it was stolen from me, but as the probability of getting it back is rather slim, I suppose I am finished with it! Overall, this book is an excellent topical overview of the different branches and periods of philosophy, and of some of the major philosophers of each period. It is written in very clear, concise prose, and is well organized. It is an older book (1960s), re-released, and it does in places need a language/thematic update to reflect modern revisions and inclusions (like women). I found the volume to be useful enough that I'm considering repurchasing it if mine doesn't turn up.
