This is is book for kids but it can be enjoyed by the whole family!
Read it in a couple of hours: this is the story of Ara, a 9 years old black boy from Toronto who went to St. Catharines to spend his March Break week with his grandparents. He thinks it will be boring to stay in dull St. Catharines while his friends will be in Florida or the Bahamas...
..But, his mom gives him a weird looking bracelet which allows him to time travel and meets Harriet Tubman! With his new friend Sam, Ara will work with Harriet to free a black family and will learn a lot about black history.
I also learned with him, I knew the story of Harriet Tubman but not all details. This book is a historical fiction, with a lot of emphasis on the educational side. Other than the 2022 people (Ara and his family/Sam), everyone else is real! We get to meet some of the members of the Underground Railroad and understand how it works from the USA to Canada.
Of course as an adult, you have to suspend disbelief to enjoy the story lol! Like when the 9 years old follow an unknown old lady who tells them it is mission time, the mommy radar quickly goes off like no kids!! ^_^
A nice story that your kids will enjoy. I loved the illustration in this book, the big picture shown on one side, and another small item in the corner of page, highlighting some important details from the story.
Can't wait to read the other books in the series to see where Ara is going to land!

A very fun and inspirational (and beautifully illustrated) children’s book that educates its readers on Black Canadian history (and how they can see this history today), and teaches children to be brave and have confidence in themselves. Looking forward to more from this series!!

Not only does it centres children thereby increasing their esteem, it builds around a powerful historical education that will become even more important for children as they grow up. A highly recommended book for middle age early readers as well as every member of the family!
