The Cavendish Family #3

Bring a Boxer to His Knees

Rate this book
A beautiful sharpshooter who’d rather aim for applause than love. A boxing beast whose heart is his strongest muscle. Away from the ballrooms of the ton, they’ll find a love that saves them both.

Miss Nora Cavendish knows men can't be trusted. Instead of dancing through ballrooms searching for a husband, she auditions to perform as a sharp-shooting equestrian at Garrison’s Circus in London. The crowd loves her, and she's bound to win a spot in the show. But the ruggedly handsome strongman refuses to accept her into the circus family. His scowls heat her more than they should, but his rejection tickles her trigger finger.

Garrison’s strong man and popular boxer Maxwell Brooks wishes the gorgeous sharpshooter would go away. She's a spoiled nuisance and a delectable distraction. Near starving and worried for his destitute family, Max can't rest, let alone sink his teeth into such a beauty.

When the impossible happens and the strong man's weakness is revealed, will he let Nora close enough to save him?

And when one swipe of Max's thumb across her jaw lowers all her defenses, will Nora set a new target–his heart?

The third novel in the Cavendish Family series is a slow burn, enemies to friends to lovers that takes readers from ballrooms to a gas lamp lit circus amphitheater and an abandoned abbey as the final Cavendish daughter finds herself and her heart in the arms of a strongman.

The Cavendish family is back! And what a glorious book is this! The heroine is Nora Cavendish, who was somewhat mysterious with her whereabouts in the previous book… And now we discover why: she joined a circus! A circus with a very alluring strongman to boot!
Can a book be hilarious and heart-rending at the same time? Make one smile and then cry the following page? Well, yes, if it’s a book by Charlie Lane! And this can easily be one of my favorite books of her so far, even if I adored them all. I love her style of writing, unconventional, moving, brimming with emotion. Her characters are wonderfully human, even flawed, but always so relatable. Max is such an endearing hero, strong and vulnerable at the same time. And I love that these books center around one big event that happened to the family (I don’t want to spoiler anything for those who haven’t read the previous books. By the way, this can be read as a standalone as well, because everything is clearly explained) and that shaped them all, for better and for worse. I wish I could give more than five stars to this astounding romance!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Nora Cavendish longs to make people happy and to win a spot performing her act in Garrison's circus. Accurate shooting with pistols and exceptional horseback riding are her act. Maxwell Brooks is the strongman and a boxer. The Mysterious Maiden draws his attention. When Max falls ill, Nora makes arrangements to get him home to his family to recover. A close call, Max recovers and Nora fills his heart. Nora can't imagine a life without him as her hero, even when she finds out who he really is. A relationship built on the trust Nora never had growing up.

Will their bad beginning sign off their relationship…

At the beginning, I was not sure to like Nora, her plights were no hardship compared to a man starving, on the verge of collapsing. Her situation looked more like a spoiled child latest tantrum than a life’s threatening crisis.
Yet she is the one who accepts to upend her life to bring him to a safer place for him to recover.
So what began as a wild trip with two people who in appearance can not stand the other, soon turns into a journey of discovery.
They learn they are more than the facade they present to the world, they struggle each on their own way, Nora for be herself as society won’t accept her free spirit and Maxwell to make ends meet as many depend on him.

And once they see behind the mask, their relationship switches, Maxwell accepts he could have handled things differently, he sees his errors and for Nora is ready to turn the table, but is she too, ready to change her own future, to alter the course of what she is close to touch with her fingertips, recognizing of her talent.
A lovely tale of discovery, to see past the mask and accept the other with its differences and dreams.

Cute story. Not sure why Amazon has "a steamy historical" included in the title. It's pretty vanilla IMO.

This is the third book in the Cavendish Family series by Charlie Lane. The author has again written a unique story about another Cavendish family member.

Lady Nora Cavendish and Maxwell Brooks are a very unlikely pairing. She is a member of the ton, he boxes and is the strongman at the Garrison Circus in London. She is anything but a dutiful daughter looking for a husband. She secretly auditions as a sharp-shooting equestrian at the local circus in London.

Maxwell Brooks wants nothing to do with her and that what makes their journey from enemies to friends to lovers so captivating. When Max is hurt Nora takes it upon herself to take him to his family to recuperate. Max does not appreciate her help but as they spend time together he realizes she is not the spoiled debutante he thought she was.

You will enjoy every moment of their journey as they peel away the barriers surrounding their hearts trying to protect themselves from being ignored, disappointed, overlooked, and unloved. I absolutely loved these two characters they both had insecurities and were fighting their attraction to each other but eventually faced they were meant to be together, as unlikely as it might seem. Additionally, I enjoyed this story because it didn't occur in ballrooms or at a house party but at a circus.

I have enjoyed the entire Cavendish series and think you will too! I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily providing my honest review.

Nora Cavendish and Maxwell Brooks totally unexpected. I normally write reviews right away but this one stays with you long after the last page.
Nora is a sharp shooter daredevil atop a horse.
Max is a strongman, and boxer who is not very good at the second but feels he must to support his nieces, their mom, and his sisters.
Max and Nora at first are like oil and vinegar. Beware a perpetually happy person they normal hide great pain. This is Nora, who thought if she smiled and acted a certain way her dad the explorer would love them and her and not leave but he always did. Leaving her sister to raise them until Sarah her step mom came in the picture!
Max was desperate to earn enough coin to help those he loved at the Abbey he abused his health and body.
When he finally breaks down Nora offers to take him to his family so he could regain his strength and health.
Max doesn’t know how to ask for or receive help unless he’s growling like a bear!
They each believe the worst of each other. When the gloves come off, Max realizes that his family needs him more alive and healthy and just to be!!
Nora confronts her deep rooted anger at her father and reveals secrets she has hidden from him about who she really is!
They each learn when yo ask for help and receive it in return! It’s one of the harder life lessons! Somewhere along the way they fell in love! Bravo!

Maxwell Brooks is a circus strongman and a boxer. He is also a viscount who inherited a mess. He is doing what he feels he must to feed his family, but he is not taking care of himself. Nora Cavendish is the daughter of a baron who stays away exploring most of the time. She has felt alone and abandoned since her mother died. wants to be a sharpshooter in the circus where Max works. These two are oil and water. Max is injured in an accident during his act, Nora is the one chosen to see him home. When they join his family, things begin to change. Max and Nora are great characters, each with something important to learn. For him, it’s that he doesn’t have to do everything alone. He needs to learn to accept help, that it does not make him weak. Nora needs to know that she is not alone, that she is valued and appreciated. This is a sort of enemies-to-lovers story, and their feelings and romance unfold slowly. They have a somewhat chaotic reach for the elusive happily ever after, but they get there. Entertaining and enjoyable story.

Having read and enjoyed the first two books in Charlie Lane's Cavendish Family series, I was looking forward to Nora Cavendish's story.

Nora is the daughter of a baron and a sharpshooter who wants to run away and join the circus.

Maxwell Brooks is the strongman, and a viscount by default, who has run away and joined the circus in order to support his family.

"A man, no matter the muscle on his body, amounts to nothing if he can't care for those he is responsible for."

Nora and Max are wary of but drawn to each other and, when Max falls ill, Nora takes over to get him home and take care of him. She sees his ancestral home and meets the family for whom he has been risking his life. Cavendish women often achieve the impossible, and Nora is no exception.

Nora and Max develop a steamy relationship that will have you laughing out loud when the bed collapses! They find all the love and support they need in each other.

You will also love reading about the twins and Freddy, the dowager viscountess, and her daughters, who will feature in the next book - Yeah!

I received an ARC in exchange for a voluntary honest review.

4 1/2 stars. Time to give some love to Charlie Lane. This is my favorite of the series, and may be my favorite book by the author. Humor, heart, and wonderful turns of phrase abound. It's a page-turner. I love the fact that in their daily lives Nora and Max play different roles than the Regency norm; the fact that they're circus performers makes the premise memorable. Also, their chemistry is great from the start, with sunshine-heroine-meets-grumpy-hero vibes. The sex scenes are steamy and sweet.

While this book works fine as a standalone, secondary characters, including past characters from the series, shine. I didn't really like Henry, Nora's dad, in the previous book, when he was the MMC. But he redeems himself in the end here.

I subtracted a half-star because I felt the class conflict between Nora and Max was overemphasized needlessly; the Ton wouldn't have had a problem at all with their marriage, and, in fact, Nora was marrying up. Society would have had an issue with their roles as circus performers, which is definitely unrealistic, but the premise is so different and Nora and Max so fun together I didn't really care.

Steam level: 3-4, tastefully written.

It's time to catch up with the Cavendish's in this third installment of the captivating The Cavendish Family series. Nora Cavendish is not your typical society miss and she doesn't trust men at all. So instead of wasting her time dancing in ballrooms, she decides to try out for a sharpshooting position with a circus. Max is a boxer in the circus and when Nora joins, he thinks her annoying and spoiled and wants her to go away. Max has his own responsibilities and problems and can't risk the distraction. Only he can't deny the attraction he feels towards her.
The drama and passion pulled me right in and the writing and storytelling is simply brilliant. I also enjoyed the humor and witty dialogue which had me laughing and smiling. With wonderfully realistic and flawed characters and a storyline that will keep you turning the pages, this charming story had me hooked till the end.
So glad I had the opportunity to read this book!

This is the third book in the Cavendish family series. I have enjoyed them all! Nora Cavendish has been secretly training as a sharpshooter for the circus, much to the annoyance of Max, the circus strongman. He thinks she is a vapid, rich miss who is only there for kicks and will soon lose interest and head back to the ballrooms of the Ton. She wants to prove him wrong. When Max gets ill, Nora volunteers to take him home…and then the fun begins! The development of Max and Nora’s relationship feels so real and natural. Max is overwhelmed with his duty to his family. Nora makes it her mission to get him to see he has lost sight of what is important. By helping Max, Nora recognizes her own issues with abandonment that she has swallowed down. Their love is one of mutual respect and admiration. They actually communicate with one another openly and honestly. The story is sweet, funny and, at times, heartbreaking. I laughed…I cried…and at the end…I cheered! Definitely recommend!
This could be read as a stand alone BUT I highly recommend the whole series! There is some deep Cavendish family stuff that is at the core of all three books…so reading the series will lead to a richer reading experience!

Nora Cavendish is the daughter of a baron but has been secretly training to be a sharpshooter and is an excellent marksman with pistols and a great horsewoman. She wants to be an entertainer at Garrison's Circus in London a sort of pre-dater to Buffalo Bill's Annie Oakley. At her audition she meets the handsome but distant Maxwell Brooks the circus strongman. He also boxes to make money to support his relatives. When he collapses with a broken rib after fighting the previous morning Nora is concerned and a coach trip follows as she borrows her friend the Viscount's post-chaise driving to Norfolk. A romance slowly burning and overcoming the proud Max's resistance when the heated scenes begin. A fun tale. Received this arc and have voluntarily reviewed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this very unique and entertaining story that took us to the circus where one of the very unconventional Cavendishes joins the circus as a equestrian sharpshooter. It’s there that Nora meets Max, the big burly, Strongman, who is also a boxer and a Viscount . She innocently becomes involved with his care when he is injured. She is kind and caring, even when he is quite the opposite to her. As she helps him deal with his feelings of guilt and neglect of his sisters and family, she is faced with her own anger and abandonment issues from her own father. It’s a heartwarming love story as they grow to love and trust one another.

The Mysterious Maiden and her Beast.
You just know from the start of the book that this one is going to take you on one wild ride. The heroine is a spunky lady and it is pretty clear from the beginning that things are not so great in her life. Now right from the beginning you will find a wonderful and unexpected twist. You will meet Max and he has had a hard life and where he may be attracted to Nora he does not trust her. This book will take hold and not let the reader go it is really good storytelling by the author. I did receive a free copy of this book from StoryOrigins and voluntarily chose to review it.

Two worlds apart

Nora has chosen her own way to deal with the loss of her mother and her father's subsequent abdication of his parental responsibilities. Growing up with her older sister, Ada's love, guidance, and encouragement has helped all but the anger and abandonment that Nora has hidden behind a facade of smiles and seeming happiness.
When she meets a man, all these unresolved feelings may wreck a new relationship. He is from a different world, performing in a London circus. She's the daughter of a well known, titled writer and explorer. Her hobby is sharp shooting. She hopes to join the circus one day!
I highly recommend this novel and author!

Best book of the series so far. Not sure I’ll read book 4 since I’ve not liked the “girl” in the background of the first 3 books. She’s just mean. Plus, there was a review where it dragged on and that definitely isn’t enticing.

This book 3 was really good. Would of been a 5-star had the author continued with the “happy” ending. But, still as it was it was real good. Enjoyed the storyline.

“Help or no help”…….. That is the question that is asked between the strongman and the very determined and able woman. Max and Nora have very different views on who is the strongest and also the most determined, as they fight their attraction and places in society. A delightful read by a very popular author. I would love to give this a 10 STAR rating.

Nora is not as secure in her life as she appears. She has a lot of anger and hurt buried deep. Max is a strongman that is very insecure. He isn’t pleased with Nora invading his world. Their story is very rocky but they end up bringing out the best in each other.

Really enjoyed the book.

An enjoyable story, something a little different with an unconventional woman and a boxer as the main characters. Max and Nora kept me entertained, their romance was a slow burn which turned into a wonderful enemies to friends to lovers romance.
