Tommy knew the right thing to do was turn them in to the cops. But that wasn't the adventurous thing to do!

What happened to the three men who escaped from Alcatraz prison in June, 1962? Did they meet the same watery fate as dozens who preceded them into the cold San Francisco Bay? There is credible evidence two of them - brothers John and Clarence Anglin - not only survived but lived for years in South America. Inseparable is a fictional account of how a 13-year-old boy named Tommy helped them to freedom.

Tommy O’Conner was an only child whose mother, a widow of the Korean Conflict, had been left to make it on her own. She passed her independent, sometimes lonely spirit, to her son. But Tommy was also, in many ways, no different than other boys his age who dreamed of adventure. Then, one June day in 1962, his daydreams were interrupted by the real thing when he came face to face with John and Clarence Anglin - two of the Alcatraz escapees - and made the decision which would change all their lives.

A late-night escape from what was said to be one of the most inescapable prisons in the world, is the subject of this historical fiction novel by author David Kruh.

On a summer night in 1962, three prisoners escaped from their cells in Alcatraz with the help of some papier-mâché heads, convincing enough to make guards think the men were sleeping and raft the men fashioned out of raincoats that had been sewn together.

Kruh's novel, 'Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure,' explores what may have happened to the prisoners during, and after, their daring escape. Initially, a fourth prisoner, a man named Allen West, was supposed to escape with the others, but he was unable to remove the vent cover in his cell that he was supposed to escape from. With his encouragement, the others left without him, but they soon figure out that their raft does not row the same without him.

The three men end up off course from where they intended to go, and when the raft begins leaking, they are thrown into the freezing waters of the bay. Struggling to swim for their lives, two of the men, Clarence and John Anglin, manage to make it to a beach in Sausalito where they are found by a young boy named Tommy O'Conner.

Tommy agrees to help the men get to somewhere safer and less visible, but after bringing them to a disused fort he soon begins facing questions from his mother and the local police chief. Meanwhile, the other prisoner, a man named Frank Morris, washes up on a jetty underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. On his own, he manages to find warmth and some old army rations inside of a lighthouse. But Frank has a long way to go if he intends to fully realize his plan of stealing a car and heading out of town altogether.

A fantastic look at what might have been on the night of one of history's greatest mysteries I could not put the book down and I did not want it to end! Kruh has an amazing talent for pulling the reader in. He captures the island and sea beautifully and he is an excellent character builder. He took from his research what was known as fact and wove a believable and captivating novel of what may have happened to the escapees. This should be optioned for a major motion picture! Bravo!

Opened in 1934 with the sole intent of turning the otherwise spectacularly colourful disposition of America's worst criminals into some world of black and white, the best befitting name for Alcatraz can only be America’s Devils' island. However, one famed prison break changes everything. Something that many authors can simply narrate, with only a few authors being able to blend some good story into this whole fiasco. David Kruh just perfectly fits into this fold of authors with his latest work, Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure.

This amazing debut revolves around the story of the three famous Alcatraz escapees who do so using a homemade raft. By luck or by chance two of these escapees land on some beach near Sausalito where they are accosted by a thirteen-year-old independent-minded boy, Tommy. Shunning the idea of reporting the men to the authorities, Tommy decides to join and help the men escape from the authorities, without the consent of his widowed mother. Will the escapees be able to evade the authorities who are on their neck, the media, Tommy's mother and the harsh environment and walk into freedom thus changing their lives forever?
Kruh does a marvellous job with how he fuses his story with that of the true 1962 famed Alcatraz escape. It is just but amazing. His depiction of the characters of both John and Clarence Anglin is just perfect, while giving the reader the required adventure thrill to keep you perusing page to page. Worth a five-star and expecting more!

Lots of historical references. I had to keep reminding myself that this was fiction and not a true recounting of the Alcatraz escape. Well done.

“Only the government would take escape artists from prisons all over the country and put them in one place. What could possibly go wrong?”

June 1962. The silence of the waters around Alcatraz island is abruptly shattered by the sound of alarm bells. Overnight, three men have escaped from their cells, leaving only papier-mâché heads in their wake. As the island descends into chaos, only one questioned permeates the air: how far did the prisoners manage to get?

Everyone knows no one can escape from Alcatraz. Even if the prisoners managed to get out of their cells, the waters around the island are freezing cold and would kill anyone who attempted to swim the few miles to the shore of San Francisco. But as the hours turned to days, the three prisoners never reappeared, and their bodies were never found.

Based on a real escape in 1962, ‘Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure,’ by David Kruh is a historical fiction novel that takes a look at what might have happened during the escape, and what might have become of the prisoners once they made it to San Francisco.

After getting split up during their escape, Frank Morris and the two brothers, Clarence and John Anglin make it to different parts of the shore, half-frozen and starving. The three men face the decision about how to find food and shelter without getting seen by anyone—and without getting taken back to the island where they were sure to face even heftier sentences.

Kruh's writing is marvelous and his usage of different perspectives to drive the plot forward made the novel all that much more interesting and electric. It is clear that a lot of research was put into this book and it paid off in a big way. 'Inseparable,' is one hell of a read for all historical fiction and adventure lovers!

On June 11, 1962 three men made history when they escaped from Alcatraz, John Anglin and his brother Clarence, along with fellow prison mate, Frank Morris. After extensive research, author David Kruh has woven historical events and people with fictional characters into an enjoyable story and presented his theory as to their fate.
Months of preparation have paid off for the Anglin brothers and Frank Morris. They are finally out! But their fate is tied to that of 13 year old Tommy and his mother Molly. The school year has ended and Tommy has big plans for summer holidays. But things change, when he sees the two brothers huddled on a beach and in trouble. Although he sees through their story, their plight moves him and he decides to help them, even though it means hiding the truth from his mother, Molly and especially her friend, Chief of Police of Sausalito, Tony Marianetti, a man Tommy doesn't like. Molly, widowed in WWII, has turned her wartime job of welding into a hobby and struggles to raise her son, by working as a waitress, for a local celebrity restaurant owner. Meanwhile, Frank Morris has revenge on his mind, after he is separated from the brothers when their raft capsizes during the inmates' escape to freedom. In a dramatic conclusion, Tommy, his mother and Chief Marianetti all learn a valuable lesson about life, love, humanity, forgiveness, reconciliation and reformation from the Anglin brothers.
I especially liked how the author weaves memorable real historical characters into the story and evokes a nostalgia for past times in San Francisco. Molly embodies the spirit of women, who entered the workplace during WWII and fights for the rights of women and equality for blacks. We learn about the poor of San Francisco, who lived in a house boat colony on the bay, considered the "other side of the tracks" by those, who were better off. Who wins the contest for most colourful character, Sally Stanford, the former Mabel Busby, a bordello owner come fine dining owner and well known philanthropist, or Juanita Musson, the muumuu wearing restaurant owner who would tell complaining customers, "Eat it or Wear it!" and literally follow through with her threat? The latter personage brought back fond childhood memories to me of an elderly relative who said the same thing to a younger family member and did carry through with the threat one summer dinner time! Oh, to go back in time and ask that long dead relative if they were following the mantra of Juanita or if it was a common threat of the times to get children to eat!

Once I saw this book and read the summary, I knew I had to read it. I've always been intrigued by Alcatraz and the stories surrounding this prison.

The story is based on the 1962 escape of three inmates from Alcatraz in a homemade raft. Two of the escapees landed on a beach near Sausalito. There they are helped by a 13-year-old boy. Not only do they have to evade the authorities and the media, but they also have to evade the boy's mother.

Honestly, I had a hard time putting this down! I had to know what was going to happen next for the inmates and their young accomplice! I liked Tommy and I thought he was a nice addition to the story.

I know a little bit about Clarence Anglin, John Anglin, and Frank Morris. Not much though, but I remember the names and some of the story. I barely remember the movie starring Clint Eastwood (it has been a million years since I watched that movie). I was super tempted to do a quick Google search, but I was a good kid and didn't. Yes, yes, be proud of me. I'm glad I didn't because I was able to just enjoy this rendition without outside influences.

But yes, I really enjoyed this version of events. I also thought the formatting was different but fit perfectly for the story. There weren't necessarily "chapters", but the story was broken down by day and times. It was fun and gave the story a sense of urgency!

The ending was good and it made me want more!

Overall, this was fast-paced and intriguing. It was a heck of a ride, but I loved every moment. I had no idea what was going to happen next and I couldn't put it down. Some nice twists and turns that will make you stay up way too late wanting to read just a few more pages. I highly recommend this for historical fiction lovers! I had zero issues! Rating? I'll give it 5 stars of course.

A brilliant historical fiction from a terrific storyteller! ‘Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure,’ by David Kruh is based off of the real-life escape of three prisoners from Alcatraz in 1961.

In real life, no definitive traces of prisoners, Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence Anglin were ever found after their daring late-night escape, but in this novel, Kruh examines how the escape might have gone and what might have become of the men afterward.

After planning their escape for months, the three prisoners set out to cross the bay to San Francisco under cover of nightfall one fateful June night. But before long, the raft that they had fashioned out of sewed together raincoats gets a hole, and the men are cast into the freezing waters of the bay. Struggling to swim, the three men wash up in very different areas than they had intended to escape to.

The plan was to make it to Angel Island, the closest island to Alcatraz. Instead, the two Anglin brothers wash up on a beach in Sausalito, miles away from their intended destination. Waterlogged and wounded from their swim, the men are soon found by a young boy named Tommy O’Conner, who agrees to help them get to a disused local fort. However, Tommy soon faces trouble from his mother and the local police, and will have to find a way to help the men with the limited resources at his disposal.

Meanwhile, Frank Morris is on his own, making his way west through empty military bases in the effort to get to a town where he can steal a car. All three men face hunger, cold and other dangers in their quest to escape their prison and get away from San Francisco altogether without getting caught again.

This is an incredibly immersive novel by Kruh, and one well worth the read! A definite must read for historical fiction and adventure lovers!

Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure is a great debut for the talented, David Kruh. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and love how the author used his imagination on what happened to the infamous Alcatraz escapees, Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin from Alcatraz. I have always been captivated with this mystery over the years. This fictional tale took me on quite the adventure and I had to keep reading to find out what could possibly happen next. I loved it!
Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure will be getting five stars from me. Readers who enjoy reading fictional accounts of historical events will want to pick this one up. I will most definitely will be curious to see what else David Kruh has in store for his readers next.

I received a paperback copy of Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

If you enjoy historical fiction you must give this book a try. A very creative Escape from Alcatraz story. It does not focus on the escapes which makes it so interesting. The fictional and semi-fictional characters will grab you as will the storyline

“Funny, the places one goes when faced with utter exhaustion and uncertainty. John found himself thinking about a day many years ago when his parents, flush with some extra cash given them by a grateful farmer whose harvest had been especially good, took them to a movie. John still remembered the feel of the nickel, heavy and cool in his hand as he and his siblings lined up outside the theater. He couldn't remember the town, but he remembered the movie. Mutiny on the Bounty.”

Three prisoners escape from Alcatraz in this electrifying new historical fiction novel from author, David Kruh. Based off of the real life escape from the island in 1962, 'Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure,' tells the story of what might have happened to the prisoners who, in real life, were never officially confirmed to have survived.

Frank Morris and the brothers, Clarence and John Anglin make it to San Francisco after rowing across the bay on a raft made of stitched together raincoats. After being split up, Frank makes it to a different part of the shore than the brothers, but all three face the same problem of trying to get as far from Alcatraz as possible—without being seen by any police.

Nearby, a young boy named Tommy O'Conner wakes for the day, excited to spend some time with his friend, only to stumble upon Clarence and John Anglin, waterlogged and exhausted. After the brothers confess to Tommy that they escaped from Alcatraz, he decides to help them anyway.

Meanwhile, Frank makes it to a group of abandoned forts and begins searching them for supplies, working his way west with the aim of eventually finding a car to steal so that he can get out of San Francisco altogether.

This is a fantastic work of historical fiction by David Kruh. It is clear that he did painstaking research but he also has a keen sense of character purpose and an incredible plot! ‘Inseparable’ is my new favorite this year!

It was a great story of a very fascinating place and family loyalty. It was an easy story to read, but a tough book as there were some very noticeable grammar and editing errors. It might be worth having it edited.
