★★★READ TO YOUR DOG Series★★★ Book One, is a combination of sight-words, keywords, and phonics (SKWP method) Kathy designed to teach your 6 months to 5-year-olds to read, while they think they are helping to read to their dog. If you don’t have a dog, then you can read to their little stuffy. Kathy taught students how to read in a two-room schoolhouse in Appalachia, then reading and creative writing at a private school in NYC, and remediation, and enrichment privately. Later, developed curriculum and positive parenting series for parents, and grandparents. And yes, she had dogs all her life, although Scout is the first one who enjoys reading! I was so excited to recently get to use the book Read to your dog by Kathy Hunter with my students. I tutor children at the elementary school level from 4-8 years of age. When using this book with one of my students we got the opportunity to talk about how /oa/ in the name Joan sounds as well as got to talk about the ch sound when reading the book which brought up great learning opportunities for the student. The student at the end had told me " My favorite part of this book was when it said "Max loves Chilly the cat!" The student really enjoyed this book and as someone working with children I highly recommend this book for beginning readers but also dont rule this out for some of the older students as well as this student was 8 and loves animals and got great learning experiences from this book. Another student I showed this book to got the opportunity to work on sounding out words and practicing sight words which was great and he had gotten so excited as he read the word "tree" for the very first time. I highly recommend this to anyone working with children teaching children to read. This story is great for children of many different age levels and I love the balance of great illustrations and simple sentences for the children to practice.
The book - book 1 - is perfect for everyone in the family, but especially young, and pre-readers, seem to love it! Little ones choose this book, and Book 2 to read or have read to them again and again. The compelling thing about this and its follow-up book, is it actually teaches reading skills, so the pre-reader comes closer to being a full fledged reader! And there is nothing better than that!
