The Killer's Club

Rate this book
Audrey Spencer has landed her dream job as a Deputy District Attorney and is settling into the career change when the daughter of District Attorney Gregory Pope is found stabbed to death in a nearby park. Nobody could have been more surprised than Audrey when Pope assigns her to handle the case. Uncertain about Pope’s motivation and assuming he hopes to influence how the case proceeds, Audrey jumps in with both feet to the most high-profile case of her career.

It isn’t long before Audrey realizes this case comes with more obstacles than she initially realized. The list of potential suspects is pages long. She must deal with office politics, something she hates. Her boss Gregory Pope--good intentions notwithstanding--is doing more harm than good. Armed with only her wits, experience, and determination to find justice, Audrey will see this through to the end, whatever the cost.

Just when she thinks she has the case figured out, the murderer strikes again, throwing cold water on her theory.

Can she catch the killer before he murders a third time?

Sneak Peek

Based on what little she saw poking out from underneath the plastic sheet, Audrey deduced Rachel had been jogging through the park when she was attacked.

A knife was five feet away in the dirt with the point down. The handle made her think of a medieval dagger. It was possible the perp had dropped it, but more likely, he’d stabbed it into the ground before fleeing.

Why?

Audrey’s eyes narrowed as she looked from the body to the knife’s position.

Accidental or intentional? She forced herself to remain open to both possibilities, even though she naturally gravitated toward one.

Did the perp want the knife to be found? Was he concerned it might be missed? She refrained from glancing at Gregory Pope. Or was it a message to the venerable District Attorney?

That was probably going too far, but she made a mental note of it still the same.

She took in a deep breath as she tried to soak it all in. It was now just after 2:45 PM. It was fifty-five, maybe sixty degrees. Jacket weather for some, but not coat. It had been half an hour since Walzer had found Audrey in the prison parking lot. She pegged the time of death between 12:30 PM and 1:45 PM.

But it’s the middle of the day, Audrey thought, looking around. It’s busy here. It was more likely from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM. She doubted Rachel could have been here longer than forty-five minutes without being discovered.

There was blood on the trail, a smear on the ground to where Rachel lay. The river hawthorn tree itself looked unharmed.

Did the perp drag her body over there? If so, why? The tree was ten feet high and thick, but it didn’t hide the body, not even close.

Rachel was on her back with her hands at her side. She probably would have been on her belly if she’d moved herself.

Good legal mystery

Great plot. Lots of twists and turns. Lots of interesting characters. Good detective investigations. Trial coverage and legal procedures very thorough.
Sometimes too detailed. Skipped over some pages. Phrases...froze heart, chills down spine, etc to describe characters emotions used way too many times.

wow you won’t even believe how this ends.

So as a new Assistant DA picked to be prosecutor of DA GREGORY POPE’S daughter. She also has her work cut out for her. Keeping Pope out of case but also making sure he doesn’t get involved in the investigation as the case continues and many other twists and turns come up. This is one you will not want to quit reading. So much comes up that you will not believe but intrigued and want to find out what’s going on. Just keep reading believe me you won’t regret it. 🧐

Very good read!

I lean towards reading legal thriller/suspense books since I worked in the legal arena many years ago, even worked in a Federal Judge's chambers. This was a very well written, true to court proceedings book. I felt as if I was on the side lines watching the story unfold. The twists, turns and surprises were intriguing and kept me turning pages. Read it in one sitting. If you like plenty of court room drama, this is a must read. The ending might surprise you!

The Killer's Club: A Killer of a Book!

Great story line, well thought out arguments for both the prosecution and defense; and in the end a just decision with some room left for argument regarding the outcome. Its a hard book to read given its content, but it is a worthy story and it keeps the reader's interest from beginning to end.

Hard to get through

I normally read a book in one day, two at the most. And I have read other Dan Dealer books . I found it hard to get through this one. I never felt any real connection to the main protagonist. The only really likable character was the detective.
Anyway I did finish it but it took me a week!

Exceptional

I read a book or more a week . I just recently discovered Dan Decker in his Mitch Turner series which I loved and Audrey did not disappoint. I am starting the next in the series as soon as I hit "post" after this review.
Many thanks to Dan Decker

Confusing but engaging

Although this story has the hint of a murder mystery, it is much more. It keeps the reader engaged until the end. It definitely helps the reader describe this story as a thriller.

It took me a bit to get into this story and it didn't grab my attention like the other Dan Decker books that I've read. When they started to get into the nitty gritty of the story it held my attention right to the end. There are a few twists to this story and left me shaking my head in the end.

Disappointed

Dialogues way too long. This is a story that could have been told in half the pages. I skipped most of the book and finally just jumped to the end to see how it finished.
