I'm going on a Treasure Hunt! is a picture book by Natasha Brown. The book starts off with Eric having a day at a beach in the Caribbean. He soon finds a message in a bottle. It’s a treasure map and we soon find ourselves joining him for an adventure into the jungle, where he finds a new friend. The story is told in rhymes.
I think the book is a really positive story. Eric seems like such a curious character, eager to explore and go on adventures. When planning to go on his adventure, he packs all sorts of supplies, and tries to be prepared for the situation. When he’s walking through the jungle, he keeps an eye out and tries to be cautious for things like snakes.. And later on, when he finds the treasure, he makes a plan to use it to help the poor. I think he’s a really good role model. My only real fault with the book is that I kind of wish we had been officially introduced to him early on. It was only after he introduces himself to the parrot that I realised his name is Eric.
There are a bunch of really good illustrations, that show all sorts of bits from the scenes. I like the addition of all the creatures in scenes, such as bird life and snakes. I think they make the scenes feel a touch more realistic, and I appreciate the aspects of flora as well. The illustrations are really good at showing people as well; seeing them at the beach and the main character exploring was really great to see. They do good work with the posing and everything looks pretty well done. One of my favourite scenes is seeing the main character crossing the rocks on the river, and to see the waterfall in the back. Such a beautiful illustration! And soon we get a double page spread of the waterfall, surrounded by an incredible display of flora and fauna.
One note I will make is that I use Kindle for PC and the book pages appear too small, so I can’t read aspects of some text. I can’t zoom in the images, so it’s not something I can fix. I don’t fault the author at all; I’m simply trying to make you aware if you’re intending to purchase the book for use on a Kindle for PC app.
Overall, it’s a really good little book. Eric is a great person to spend time with and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful!
