The Rebirth of a Phoenix is the fiery debut collection of deeply personal and self-reflective storytelling by Destinee Shipley.
Through poetry, journaling, and text conversations, Destinee tells the true story of a young Black college student who shows her journey through innocence, to despair, to finding her voice once more. With the metamorphosis of a phoenix as her anchor, this is a story of growth and self-love found through the storm.
Destinee Shipley is a poet/author, resident physician, and a storyteller...to name just a few of her hats. She has written poetry since late in high school, which has gave her a sense of stability in this fast-paced and ever-changing world. She also enjoys journaling, painting, playing her saxophone, and going to touch grass with her dog, Zuri. Beyond her creative passions, she is a resident physician training in both internal medicine and pediatrics in Memphis, TN.
I put the book down only to reflect on my own feelings while reading this. From the cover to the last page you can feel every emotion that the author is conveying through their words. Each poem takes you with it on a journey to navigate through difficult topics and feelings many of us are too scared to voice. This book feels special and important because it is. Loved it!
I wanted to like this more than I did. There was definitely growth in the writing as the book went on and there were some pretty good pieces within this collection, but part one felt like it needed to be developed further. Due to the length of many of the pieces, the way the the author chose to format most of the poems felt a little choppy and disconnected.
