This is a fascinating look at Hong Kong from a bygone era. I lived in the territory during the time the book was written and took place and it's so evident from reading these pages now that the city has changed tremendously. It's not just sociopolitical changes, but the make-up of the people in the news has shifted since the Handover from expats to locals. I doubt that a book like this written today would feature so many expats. For one, the government leaders and representatives are for the most part local. There are very few foreigners in high government posts now. Also, the social problems back then are completely different from those right now, and it's fascinating to read about it in these pages.

Nury Vittachi has a great sense of humor and knows Hong Kong more than most. These traits shine through in his book. It's a must-read for anyone who has lived in Hong Kong or is interested in how it has changed since the Handover.
