The city of London. Morning rush hour. The police pull over a motorcycle courier for a trivial offence. He doesn’t stop. The police give high-speed chase.
He jumps a red light and is mown down by an oncoming car. Killed on impact.
Detectives Paterson and Clocks arrive at a scene of carnage. Large plastic boxes are scattered across the road. Their lids open, their contents warming up in the early morning sun. A traffic officer comforts a distraught woman driver. The courier’s body lies nearby, his left leg bent at an awkward angle, his head at another: the loser of this particular meeting of metal and plastic.
The detectives take a closer look at the boxes. It’s one of the worst things they’ve ever seen. And they’ve seen some very bad things.
This discovery leads Paterson and Clocks on their most dangerous investigation yet — and into the path of Alicia Warren, a ruthless international businesswoman who will kill to keep her profits flowing.
And if that’s not enough, Johnny Clocks, England’s most foul-mouthed detective, is trying to keep his new wife happy while building a relationship with the 24-year-old son he never knew he had.
Two of my absolute favourite detectives are back and it has definitely been worth the wait!! Detective Supt Ray Paterson is young, good looking and extremely wealthy, and at the start of the series was on a fast track to the top until it all went wrong, whilst DI Johnny Clocks is the complete opposite - loud, foul-mouthed and brash having come up through the ranks but a loyal friend for life once he decides he likes you. The pair have since been through so much together and are now inseparable. These past events have truly shaped Paterson and Clocks into the characters they are now and you wonder how they would have survived if it weren’t for each other. Book 7 ended with a bit of a cliff-hanger as a young man introduced himself as Clocks’ son at his wedding to DI Lyndsey Kitchener, a Metropolitan Police tactical firearms officer. Since retiring, the detective pair’s greatest supporter, former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Wallace (Wol) Young, has busied himself setting up a hit squad to deal with the criminal filth that still exists all around. Already employed are Alice the “babysitter” from the previous story and ex-British soldier Corporal Liam Bailey nicknamed the “White Ghost” who also featured in a previous book. Wol is in the process of persuading Lyndsey to join him although Paterson and Clocks have decided they have more to do in the police first. So not only does Clocks have the wrath of Lyndsey to deal with, he’s also plunged into a nightmare of a case when he and Paterson are called to the scene of a road traffic accident by Inspector “No-Nuts” Norris. A motorcycle courier involved in a police pursuit is lying dead in the road, his cargo of transplant body parts strewn about. Horrific, but even more so when you consider that there are far more than there ought to be. A search of his flat produces two names and a contact in Interpol points them in the direction of a grisly organ harvesting gang run under the auspices of an aid charity. Setting back Anglo-French relations by about 200 years in the process, the trail leads them to Paris and the sprawling migrant camp there, and then back to England where they make a shattering discovery when they meet the surgeon involved in this awful deadly trade. Finally they discover the identity of the gang’s boss and travel to Mumbai where it seems no one can be trusted and everyone has a price. They need help and know exactly who they should call. This case will push them right to the brink and will surely leave its mark on them. As in all the other books in this series the pace is terrific with loads of shocking and gripping action, and this really is a book that kept me hooked till the last very unexpected pages. Clocks and Paterson make a great team and have a fantastic relationship built on shared and very traumatic events. There is a lot of humorous banter between the two and also with others in their team, including “Monkey” Harris, Tommy Gunn and “Dusty” Doneghan, making the book fun at the same time as tackling deadly serious crimes. In fact, I think the banter between Paterson and Clocks is even more hilarious in this book than previous ones. Definitely more Sweeney than pc and I completely love the pair of them! If you haven't, I urge you to read the series in order. There is a lot of history and although it is well described and the books can be enjoyed as standalones it wouldn't be the same reading them out of turn. There’s a couple of unresolved threads at the end of the book which leaves me begging for the next book soon! 5*
When the police spot a motorcycle courier not strictly conforming to the law, the decide to pull him over – only he doesn’t agree and takes off at speed. The chase that follows ends in disaster with the courier’s death; however his packages open a whole can of worms which take Paterson & Clocks a fair distance from home before they get a handle on exactly what’s going on. Can they get to the bottom of things and arrest the top villains?
I remember really enjoying the last Detective Ray Paterson novel which is why I jumped at the chance to join the blog tour for this one, but this time round I just wasn’t ‘in the groove’. I don’t recall the Clocks character being quite so irritating and, on this occasion, he really took away from the story for me. I don’t know how anyone could work with such a character; I did see that his antics drew the attention of the wrong ‘uns away from Paterson but, for me, he was a major irritation throughout. I couldn’t fathom why their superiors let them away with so much – I’m much more used to rules and regulations being followed in police procedurals. There is no denying that this is a cleverly crafted novel and one which would have kept me engrossed if it wasn’t for Johnny Clocks nonsense which I found more of an irritating distraction. There is no doubt Steve Parker knows how to produce a great thriller, but I suspect I’ll be giving this series a miss in future. 4*.
I've probably said this before but this series would make an excellent tv series, they'd have to tone down Clocksie though as he seems to have got even more outrageous as the series has progressed, still funny though! Paterson and Clocksie make an unusual pairing but it works, both looking out for the other. They don't go by the rules and the more into the series you get the more risks they both take. You really need to read the whole series to understand how they have become a law unto themselves, I'm just worried how it's all going to end. Can't wait to catch up with this pair, soon I hope.
Gritty, grisly and gruesome, Steve Parker’s Dead on Delivery is an edge of your seat crime thriller that is not for the faint-hearted.
It’s the morning rush hour and the streets of London are teeming with traffic. A motorcycle courier commits a trivial offence and is pulled over by the police, but he doesn’t stop and keeps on going. The police give chase, but the courier has no intention of getting caught and jumps a red light – only to be mowed down by an oncoming car. The courier is killed on impact and the female driver is distraught and beside herself with shock. But things take a far more terrifying turn as the police look at the packages the courier was carrying and see something that stops them in their tracks – and these detectives are not easily shocked or surprised.
In their line of work, Paterson and Clocks have seen their fair share of horrifying sights, but they’ve never come across something so macabre or so terrifying. Plunged into their most terrifying investigation yet, Paterson and Clocks find themselves on the trail of ruthless businesswoman Alicia Warren, who is insanely driven by the bottom line and who is willing to do whatever it takes for her profit margins – even murder!
Will Paterson and Clocks get to the bottom of this case? And will Johnny Clocks manage to keep his wife happy while trying to bond with the grown-up son he never knew he had?
Steve Parker writes edgy, urban and terrifying crime fiction perfect for readers who like their thrillers dark, creepy and disturbing. Ideal for fans who like fast-paced, nail-biting and nerve-jangling crime novels that are interspersed with witty humour and clever banter, Dead on Delivery is packed with shocking twists and turns that will leave readers barely able to catch their breaths.
Paterson and Clocks are a brilliant double act. They are as different from one another as chalk and cheese, but together they are absolutely unstoppable and after galloping through Dead on Delivery, I cannot wait to see what they get up to next.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the first Paterson and Clocks book I have read - there is a series but this happily stands alone (books 1-5 are available as a box set). Wow! What had I let myself in for? A wonderful read with lots of smiles- read on: The pair who don’t play by the rules or at least push them to the very boundaries, are called to an RTA where a bike courier has been hit and killed by a car. What turns out to be even more interesting is the contents of the boxes he was carrying. This leads to an organised crime group and Paterson and Clocks going on surveillance with interaction only known to them. I found myself turning quicker and quicker to see what the seemingly hapless, but clever and calculating pair were up to next. There is a wonderful camaraderie between the pair. Paterson being more the balanced of them whilst Clocks doesn't care what anyone thinks about him. Some of the repartee are only things they could say to each other but Clocks throws in comments to others for good measure either to wind them up or to find out what they are made of. A good solid plot line and its an action packed read from cover to cover with lots of banter and humour thrown in. An excellent read with corruption, trafficking and more. I very much look forward to the next in the series.
My goodness, I do believe this was one of the most hilarious crime thrillers I have ever read. This is Johnny Clocks at his very worst – arrogant, racist, sexist and yet completely loveable when all is said and done. Even when he is almost killed, he still manages to moan about it and find the energy to throw insults at everyone around him. Right from the very beginning, it is clear that this is one of the more disturbing cases that the lads have been involved in and, once they get on the tail of the perpetrators, it also becomes one of the most dangerous. Once more, Paterson and Clocks find themselves in the firing line whilst they are trying to catch some very nasty and determined killers and their journeys to both Paris and Mumbai are fraught with danger – not least because Clocks manages to thoroughly upset the authorities who are supposed to be helping them. One of the funnier scenes is the car chase but, to be honest, it’s all a mixture of extremely amusing encounters and horrific and frightening situations. The plot was extremely well thought out, with plenty of excitement and the characters are exquisitely created. They truly are the craziest cops anyone could expect to meet. Thank you so much to Steve Parker for giving the reader such fun throughout.
Having read the previous seven books in the series, I was excited to see another Paterson & Clocks story come out and once again, it was an enjoyable read from start-to-finish although I felt it was lacking a little something compared to previous efforts.
After the cliffhanger ending to book seven, I feel the final moments of that book could have been explored a bit more here as it kind of just faded into a back story that wasn't touched on as much as I expected it to be this time around - although with so much going on elsewhere, that was perhaps understandable.
I like the way that Steve Parker is prepared to push the boundaries with these two and not just make it another police procedural like so many others that are out there, although I can appreciate the character of Clocks won't be to everyone's liking with the way his speech is written and with his views but it adds something extra in my view.
As ever, the ending leaves things very much open when it comes to book nine, which I'll look forward to reading in due course - as I certainly think there will be more to come...
Paterson and Clocks are back and more determined than ever to catch the bad guys.
The fun and mayhem begins with the death of a Motorcycle Courier who was transporting organs for transplantation when he dies in a RTA and Paterson and Clocks are called in when it becomes clear there are more body parts than there should be. It soon becomes clear there is an organ trafficking ring at large.
As the investigation gets under way it soon becomes clear that what our favourite detectives are uncovering is so much more than just people selling a kidney here and there. As the 2 men set off for France they leave a trail of mayhem behind them for someone else to deal with. From France to India and back to France they will not stop until they catch the sadistic murderers who are preying on the desperate.
You have to love these two never before have I read such adrenaline pumping books that made me smile all the way through.
Dead on Delivery is book 8 in the Det Sup Paterson and DI Clocks series by Steve Parker. This is the first book I have read by this author, and it read well as a standalone. There are so many laugh out loud moments throughout this book. Johnny Clocks is a bit of a character, very brash, rude, unconventional and doesn’t respond very well to authority. Definitely not politically correct. Paterson and Clocks are after a gang involved in body parts trafficking and drugs and end up in France and India on their trail, chartering planes to get around. They leave behind dead bodies, injured people and burnt buildings. Definitely action packed.
Killer Thriller Patterson and Clock Book eight, Ray and newly married Johnny are back along with more banter and mayhem that I look forward to reading it's never a dull moment with these two that makes it such a good crime story that is delivered from the author. Rush hour traffic in the city of London and a motorbike driving by a courier is mown down and killed leaving large plastic boxes scattered and what's inside them is a very bad thing, definitely dead on delivery. This book is fast pace, full on action, such a banter of a read, I love this series, that shock you chapter after chapter. worthy ratings from me.
Another great Clocks and Paterson thriller. On paper, you wouldn't think their relationship would work, but over the years they have become best friends who have each other backs. When a motorcyclist is killed in an accident they find he was transporting body parts which it turns out were come by illegally. Their investigation takes them to France and Mumbai where Clocks manages to to upset everyone and almost loses a kidney himself. Plenty of action and humour, I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next in the series.
DEAD ON DELIVERY opens with a couple of shocking surprises exceeded only by the hair-raising frenzy that follows, resulting in a heart-stopping event and a horrific discovery. Fast paced action and knock-down drag-out uproar sends the pages flying by. Harrowing melee and suspense in every chapter leading to heart-racing dynamite explosive conclusions. Steve Parker is the best at incorporating eye tearing laughs in a crime thriller. DEAD ON DELIVERY IS A SENSATIONAL WINNER
I shouldn't like these books at all, Patterson & Clocks are uncouth and unethical. The stories are always quite brutal in their detail and the language is very strong. Despite all this, I cannot put these books down once I start, and this latest one was no exception. I made the mistake of reading part of this one on a train journey, nearly missed my station and embarrassed myself by laughing out loud on a few occasions. Can't wait for the next one.
Another absolute stunner featuring Patterson & Clocks, the stuff the rules - let's get the bad guys - crime fighters. Diabolical criminals committing attrocious crimes are no match for the dynamic duo. Plenty of action and suspense interspersed with an abundance of humour that actually had me laugh out loud. I think this is the best one yet, and can only hope there is more to come. Give yourself a real treat and read this book.
This book was so good to read, it could have been a comical take on a crime thriller. It was so well written and so well thought out it could make just this one book a series on TV or even a Film to break Box Offices Sales. I can honestly say this pair of Policemen could be best sellers, make the best read and taught me lots I didn’t know. Thank you Steve Parker for many happy hours of reading.
Another fabulous book from Steve Parker, but be warned, this one is very blood thirsty and it has a lot of bad language. Having said that it is a superb book and I really couldn’t put it down. Someone in the book really gets a bad deal, and it’s not Patterson or Clocks, you will have to read the book to find out who. The story is very well written, it’s fast paced and it will have reading for hours.
I loved this action packed thriller featuring Detectives Clocks and Paterson. The Cockney banter between them is superb and is much needed humour when dealing with the serious subject of organ trafficking. The vivid descriptions make the various scenes come alive. This is one hot read with plenty of surprises.
Although the plot was a bit weak and not very believable but I have not laughed so much in ages. Some of the one liners are brilliant. They could make this into a movie. Might even just keep the book so I can read it again, in case I have missed the funny bits.
Patterson and Clocks dispense their own form of justice and wonderful humour in this globetrotting thriller. I can't wait to see what they get up to next.
These Steve Parker books are a great read, Paterson and Clocks are two of the craziest cops around. The story as always is somewhat irreverent, a little unbelievable, very funny and total compulsive. Looking forward to more.
Gripping series. Brilliantly dark, I genuinely want to meet the characters. Clocks would definitely be an interesting guest and any dinner party. Hats off to you Steve so well written.
This series of books are fabulous. I have read the whole series. Love Patterson n Clocks what a double act they make. Hope Steve Parker writes more chapters of this saga
Love this writer and this series.Wol and his squad are impressive, hope they're never killed off. GREAT storyline taken right from the front pages of newspapers. I agree with Paterson's use of his money. Spot on. Great ending to this book. Well done Mr. Parker!!
I laughed so much, I cried when Paterson was mocking the Dr! They are so funny together and Paterson is more like Clocks everyday. You can't blame him for wanting to kill evil people!
I have enjoyed the previous Paterson and Clocks thrillers but this one was too 'over the top' Clocks and I lost interest about a third of the way through.
