3 PENS OF CAPITOLEAN by Steven Randle (aka Doc) and Jerid Woods (aka Akili) is tagged “a collection of poems that provides a glimpse into the thoughts, passions, and plights of two young black men born and raised in the Deep South.” This it certainly is and much more!
I will never claim to be an expert in poetry, but the poems I enjoy reading are those with a smooth cadence that rolls off my tongue as I whisper them aloud to myself, those that drive a feeling deep down in my gut. Jumping back and forth, weaving their voices together into one cohesive collection, Doc and Akili have checked both of these boxes for me. Their poems speak of everyday moments, profound life-altering events, and even the act of writing itself. They explore love and connection, loss and voids, at the crossroads of inner contemplation and external experience. Or at least, that is what I have taken away from my first reading …
3 PENS OF CAPITOLEAN is a beautifully rendered display of the strengths and vulnerabilities of Black men living in the South. I leave this collection feeling humbled and thoughtful, hopeful and energized. And I know I will be digging back into this one soon, as there is much to absorb here both as a human and a writer. 💖
