Each one of these slow-paced short stories felt like a warm hug. This book captures the disappointments and regrets of the phase of middle age very accurately, unlike our youth, where we have a scope of hoping to set things right. At this age, there's a strange acceptance and compulsive settling down in respect of all things that have gone wrong, or all those dreams that have remained unfulfilled. Making peace with the realisation that we could never become our ideal selves or that we are a person with vices is really a difficult subject to deal with. This book mostly narrates stories of women, trapped in their complex overlapping worlds of family, job, forgotten lovers, broken promises, and the unkindness of a patriarchal society. Each story offers a fresh perspective from women belonging to different backgrounds, classes, and castes of Assam.
I loved the stories from pre-independence Assam. There was something very nostalgic and raw about them.
