The International Conference on Jaina Studies, held at the University of Toronto, March 31 to April 2, 1995, was a forum for international scholars invited to examine and analyze their expertise on Jainism. The broad themes and their groupings that emerged in the Conference is indicative of the participants' varied academic interests in Jaina studies. The deliberations at the Conference served to illustrate the extraordinary strivings of the Jaina Acaryas — the teachers, philosophers, logicians and aesthetes — through millennia, to sustain what they believed to be the true essence of the Jaina doctrines and ritual practices. The distinct contributions of the Jainas in fine arts, performing arts, and literature, were yet another dimension of the conference proceedings. The present book, Approaches to Jaina Philosophy, Logic, Rituals and Symbols, is the culmination of the work of this Conference.
