"...fully developed, three-dimensional characters with their own backstories and issues. A little bigotry, a little teenage romance, along with friendships - and an excellent storyline - makes this an engrossing read."
★★★★★
"..the integration of not just Hindu mythology, but other mythologies from all over the world, is brilliant. There was obviously a lot of research that went into this series and it shows."

I write feel-good YA and NA fantasy romances inspired by Indian mythology—full of slow-burn love, family ties, and the kind of magic that makes you believe again.
My current series are Elementals of India and Legend Valley Academy. I love hearing from readers, so drop a comment or question anytime!
This series helped rekindle my enjoyment of academy stories. I love the variety of different paranormals from various cultures that are represented here. Where it could be distracting, Ms Kuruganti is able to seamlessly weave them all together. The 2 MCs have a great storyline filled with some great, but not over the top, angst. Overall, this is a fantastic read from a very imaginative author.
Legends Valley is a Percy Jackson-esque magical school series with a focus on Asian mythologies. It follows Malaika (Mal), an Indian-American whose father left when she was a baby, leaving her disconnected from her Indian relatives and unaware of her magical heritage until a supernatural local spots her using illusion magic and introduces her to a whole different world.
The world of Legends Valley is really refreshing and different. It’s much more diverse than certain other magical school series, featuring lots of very different creatures from many different cultures, each with varied ethnicities and races and social norms. There were definitely creatures and myths I’d never encountered before included and I love that. And bonus points for explicitly queer background characters!
I love that there’s no ‘magical community’ in this world, there are just people in every community who happen to have magic. There’s one school for the global population, which caters to everybody, and many of the students want to go into non-magical professions once graduated. I also adore that there’s thoughtful discussion about the ethics of this sort of world - institutions holding magical relics looted from grave sites, for example, or challenging biased assumptions about certain creatures being good or evil by default of their genetics. I’d happily read ten more books building this world further!
The pacing of book 1 flowed perfectly for me, building the world and the characters and the plot so smoothly that I almost finished it in one sitting without meaning to. Book 2, however, had a bit of a lull in the first 1/3 - theoretically character building, but I don’t feel like it had much long-term relevance for the plot or the characters - and as a result some important story developments later feel very rushed and sudden, and then quickly resolved or moved passed without much examination. Book 3 is better than 2, but still never really recovers the pace for me.
This unfortunately impacts the romance the most, and I find it hard to feel properly invested in a couple when they’ve spent very few scenes together that weren’t dramatic plot development. I also feel like some of the side characters deserved more screen time, particularly Mal’s best friends Nik and Leela.
I didn’t enjoy book 2 and 3 as wholly as the first, and I also didn’t care for the bonus interludes included in this collection, but the things that make this series good are the stellar worldbuilding and the incredibly diverse and interesting cast and those two aspects alone are so well done it makes this book worth a read.

Fast paced with lots of action . A must read.
I was hooked from the first page. The descriptions of the land and culture added so much to the intrigue of the story line. This is a brilliant read! It pulled me in from beginning and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. This novel has strong, well developed characters and an interesting story line that keeps you turning the pages. I recommend this novel and would read more novels by this author. An excellent read. I received this book from StoryOrigin. This is my true and honest review.
A cookie cutter Academy series. The world building was good and some of the artifacts were interesting. It was pretty predictable and I would have liked more character depth. I did not connect with Mal - some of her decisions didnt make sense and I dont think ever found out why she disliked the cop so bad. Overall it was steady paced and an easy read with no real surprises
