TRIGGER This book discusses mental health and substance abuse issues that may be triggering or difficult for some to read.
You can only run from your demons for so long before you’ll be forced to face them.
After growing up with a drug-addicted, mentally ill mother and an incarcerated father, Autumn Carrington dreams of having the perfect life. Her boyfriend, Lucky Santiago, makes her feel like she’s one step closer, until a series of unfavorable events causes her life to unravel at the seams.
With her life in a downward spiral, Autumn is forced to take a long, hard look at who she really is. And the last thing she wants to do is continue her family’s dishonorable legacy and let down her grandmother, the only person who has ever had her back.
Despite the chaos that’s forcing her in the wrong direction, Autumn is fiercely determined to get her life back on track. The answer to her prayers seems to drop in her lap when she meets two strangers each offering the opportunity to put her plan back in motion. Now faced with two promising options, she must choose wisely. The right decision could get her back on track, but the wrong decision could cost her very soul.
I could not put the book down because I just had to know what was going to happen with Autumn. I won’t leave any spoilers. This book will keep you on your toes guessing what will happen next. Mental health is real and the author brought it to the forefront with Autumn. A great read and a new favorite author!
Wow this book will have you in your feelings. First book I’ve read by this author but it won’t be my last. Mental health is real and this author shows how mental health can affect your life. The more you read this book the more you want to read to see what’s going to become of Autumn and the demons she is fighting. Excellent job Author Shonda Mayes.
I don't normally do book reviews but, this was an amazing book! Good vs Evil. This was also my first reading by this author and I was not disappointed. Definitely worth it!
The way this author demonstrated mental illness not only educated me but gave me insight to the torment that people go through that suffer daily from this. The story had twist and turns that I didn’t see coming and was truly a page turner!
I have had a love affair with thrillers for some time but had gone on a hiatus because the ones I was coming across were either so far fetched that it was ridiculous or there was nothing “thrilling” about it. Whisper When You Say My Name changed that!
I was not Autumn’s biggest fan. I really wanted to love her because she went through a lot and her struggles were heavy. I felt obligated to like her but I just couldn’t not. Her shadiness early on made it hard for me to look beyond that side of her. When Lucky put his foot down I was actually kinda happy because I don’t like sneaky folks; yes even fictional ones. However I didn’t realize the unfortunate turn of events that would come from Lucky’s choice!
Once Autumn stopped hiding from herself I could not stop reading until I hit the end because I needed this ride on hell bound express! Then ending almost made me lose it because Autumn’s last two acts were hard to handle but after having time to digest it, I would love to see if anything else comes of this book!
Autumn Carrington knew all to well the struggles that she witness at a young age. It was a consistent reminder of what she didn’t want. She did everything in her power to achieve more than what her mother showed her. She thought she hit the jackpot with Lucky Santiago. As luck would have it, lucky didn’t live up to the gold at the end of the rainbow. Once she’s exposed to that harsh reality, all Hell breaks loose and she has to choose between what’s right and what’s wrong.
This is my first read by Author Shonda Mayes and I was impressed by her sharp pen game. I was hooked from the first chapter trying to figure out what was going to happen. Shonda brought to surface every raw emotion while telling a complex story that will leave you satisfied. Job well done and I look forward to reading more of her work.
