City of Masks #2

Rise of a Dungeon House

Rate this book
James Toledo has fled Norhilm, on a quest to find Felgoth, the Oblivion Dragon.

He has rescued his sister, Isabel, but the cost is that his many enemies know he survived. Now his enemies are looking for him in the city—to rectify his “still living” status. James needs to gain an edge if he’s to return to the city and establish his new dungeon.

James’s granddad, Leviathan, paved the road for James’s to get that edge. But that plan requires James to sail to the continent of Nazgrim. He’ll need to cross the Burning Sands in order to convince a dying Abomination, Felgoth, to join him.
But the Abominations are more powerful than anything James, or his granddad, had dealt with before, and even dying ones have ways to influence James.

James must convince the Abomination to become the boss monster of his dungeon, and then get it back to Norhilm. Once home, James will establish his dungeon, survive the attempts to kill him, and finally exact revenge on those who killed his family.

A dark litRPG dungeon tale for fans of The Punisher and The Dungeon of Stories.

After rescuing his sister and obtaining the dungeon core following the death and betrayal of his family James has set sail to fulfill his grandfather's plan. All he has to do is travel to another continent, meet with the guide, travel across the burning sands to Felgoth, complete the bargain with the Abomination that his grandfather put in place, travel home, and establish his Dungeon House. Simple, right? Except the Gods of the Dark want nothing more than to intervene and cause The Gods of Light's champion to fail.
I received a physical copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I received it along with his wife's book, the Nexus Games, and you already know how much I loved that book. Just like with that book I started and finished this book in 4 days, although that isn't the same level of achievement with this book as it is shorter. However, it is just as entertaining as his book 1, Fall of a Dungeon House.

With some books the further you get in the series the worse they get or they simply get repetitive. That isn't something you have to worry about with this one. It ends in a good stopping place while still leaving you wanting to know what happens next. I don't know if book 3 of this is out yet, but if I am given the option to read and review it I will and let you know what I think.

This is a fun LitRPG that you are sure to enjoy if you like Dungeons and Dragons. While this is book 2 in the series and reading book 1 first would be helpful, there are enough details in the book where you could read just this one without being completely lost. You'd be missing details and background, but you would still be able to enjoy the story. I can't wait to see how this series continues!

Book two

Mistakes: While this is a decent story I felt it suffered. I did find one mistake and will list it on Goodreads. I felt the sex was unnecessary and added nothing to the story of any real substance. Just some wish fulfillment. Also the book ends at 90%. The last ten percent is a short unnecessary glossary and a listing of the overblown stat sheets.

Plot: Lots of time seems to have passed between the two books and everything felt a little rushed so that the MC can establish his dungeon.

Characters: The Dark is apparently full of moronic people as they basically feed a small army to the enemy dungeon. Even though it was said more than once that the Dark had a tactician on their side, they used the most basic and stupidest tactics to assault the dungeon.
Nothing really drew me to the MC or any of his party in this book.

This book turned me into a supporter of feminism

I'd like to read you an excerpt from when James defeats his aunt.

"James stared down at her. She was perhaps a decade older than him, maybe a bit less, in her late twenties, and not bad-looking when not covered in blood.

A piece of him really did want to spare her—the male part that figured beating female enemies didn’t always mean killing them."

He's not even meant to be an anti-hero, but he's literally conflicted between murdering his aunt or sparing her so he can rape her.

The amount of casual misogyny and entitlement in this book has made me care about social justice for the first time in my life.

An excellent sequel in another fine series

Another great series from Stovall's world's of Dungeons. This instalment sees James face the internal struggle between his vengeance and the morals of the light that his grandfather and house sacrificed so much for. The story is an excellent blend of adventure and intrigue, I can't wait to read the next one.
