Centra, and its neighboring cities, are under the control of a powerful military and its harsh ruler, Larsen Ashford. The Masons were gifted extraordinary abilites by a Goddess who abandoned them over a thousand years ago, allowing them to shape the sand around them at will. Under their rule, you either have it all, or you have nothing.
Hidden from them is a society of BioShapers, a group of people able to bring plants to life from nothing. Though far less powerful than the Masons, there are some who spend their lives finding ways to overcome their struggles. Will breaking free the forgotten essence save them, or will they bring down the wrath of the Masons one last time?
A debut fantasy novel that reads like one written by an author who’s done it many times before. Forgotten Essence is a compelling story with great character work and an original magic system. Not only is the magic system original, it also is easy to understand and eliminates the sometimes arduous process of learning the system and the world that can slow down the first installment of a fantasy series.
The story is fast-paced, but doesn’t feel rushed at all and has a great mix of action scenes along with time to get to know the characters in the story. While the story is pretty straightforward, you’re also in for a few surprises along the way. Can’t recommend this book enough
Anyone who knows me can tell you that I’m not the biggest reader, but this had me hooked from the beginning, I got very attached to all the characters from the start and never lost interest through the whole thing, highly recommended
Well plotted. Likable characters. Avoids the obligatory YA love plots that seem to permeate the YA fantasy genre. Stands alone, but leaves the door open for sequels.
It's one of those books that as you read you don't want to stop. I find myself thinking about it while I'm work and can't wait to get home to pick it back up.
