Blinky Bill tells the story of a naughty little koala, Blinky Bill, and his friends Splodge the Kangaroo and Wally the Wombat. Mischievous Blinky Bill creeps out of bed at night and runs into his friends at the edge of the river and tries his hand at fishing. Borrowing the farmer's boat is only the start of the adventure with the three friends. What will Mrs. Koala and Nutsy say when they find Blinky Bill has been getting into more trouble? This Australian classic, as told by Dorothy Wall, has been reprinted with original illustrations and design. This book brings to life the much-loved and well-known Koala who stole the nation's heart.
Blinky Bill is a classic Aussie character. So when I found this slim book on a clearance table at Dymocks, of course I grabbed it.
But... Oh gosh. Where do I start with this one?
I'll just get to the point: it's awful.
OMG. There's really no redeeming this 'story'.
I mean, it's not really even a story. It's a collection of annoying mishaps about an awful boy koala who sneaks away from his tree in the middle of the night, and gets on a boat with a wombat and a kangaroo.
Except, this could've been a totally charming fun story about three animals going on an adventure that gets them shot at. Instead, it's bland and boring, features mediocre writing, and awful, intolerant characters. Ugh.
I like Children's stories, and finding myself in Australia, I thought I'd pick up a couple "classics" (per the bookshop). This one was a little too antiquated for me to enjoy, though, with some pretty blatant racism and other troubling issues. Plus, just not very charming. Perhaps you had to enjoy it in your youth to appreciate it as an adult...
The illustrations are lovely but the story is absolutely awful. Sadly, it's not just that it's dated. There isn't much of a story, and for what there is it's badly written. Something of this calibre would never be published today! A beloved Australian classic but we've moved past these original renderings.
