Before the wagons left the Laramie Plains, a quiet epidemic began infecting some of the settlers. It was a disease without a cure and threatened to create havoc among the families.
It started as just a passing remark, but soon word of a recent discovery surrounding Idaho City, just three hundred miles away inspired intense gold rush fever in many of the men. The first to become infected was Joe’s fellow scout, Chuck Lynch.
They would reach the turnoff to Idaho City in less than three weeks and Joe and Faith worried they would lose many of their friends when they reached the intersection.
Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.
The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.
As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.
My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"
Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.
I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)
"And what did the doctor say?"
"I'll ask him when we get back."
"Yes, you will."
I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.
Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.
So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.
The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.
Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.
Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.
Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.
They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.
It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.
They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.
I really got attached to Joe and Faith . As well as the other young couples and families on their journey along the Oregon trail. I would love to read sequels about Joe and Faith. I'd enjoy reading about where their traveling settled with their families in Oregon and how they fared. I must admit I feel a little frustrated by the grammatical errors. I reported them while reading the first 10 novels written by this author. For this book I decided to ignore them. Mr. Petit's story lines always keep me entertained and looking forward to reading more every night. They are my go to palate cleanser after I've read a more complicated novel such as the Outlander series. I have one more to go Outlander to go and really needed a rest. I started the Jo Beck saga thinking there were only 2 or 3. To my surprise there were many more. Mr. Petit's novels tend to end abruptly. I'm getting use to it and realize now that indicates a sequel. Relaxing and entertaining books.
Again CJP brings us a book that I absolutely could not put down. This series caught me up from the first one and has not disappointed my fascination from the first page. Joe and wife travel across country to start a new life and the adventure as they travel with the wagon train where they find friends , fight Indians and face natural disasters just to find a place to call home. BRAVO!!!!BRAVO!!!!! CJP I watch constantly for your newest books and I have every book you've written and read them over and over again. Please keep going as long as you can your work touches people's hearts, and that is why we need writers like you. Thank you, CJP.
Joe and Faith proves themselves over and over again to the other wagon train individuals!
This compelling, and definitely compassionately heartwarming, series of unending excitement will appease anyone's desired expectations cover to cover! Joe, only 16 years old, shows his maturity over and over during his time with the wagon train personnel, but still finds himself the underdog throughout his continuous exploits of valor! Too Faith is definitely his inspiration from beginning to end! Once again, Mr. Petit goes above and beyond in his descriptive storylines that successfully portrays compassion and dedication throughout this polarizing western folklore masterpiece! Too the character selections could not have been any better portrayed, as their respective performances, both good guys and bad guys, were unsurpassed in their commanding assignments! Definitely recommend this compassionately motivated story to all readers, but you western folklore fanatics will certainly be appeased immediately, and the excitement only intensifies with each new encounter! Even you non-western enthusiasts will find yourselves completely mesmerized, especially as this young couple proves themselves over and over during the tenuous westward journey!!!😃
I had trouble with book five for one very specific reason. Chuck Lynch, one of the scouts along with Joe and Herm, hear's about gold up in the Idaho territory hills. His personality changes overnight and he becomes disrespectful to those around him.
Sure, I can imagine the call of gold getting to a person. That still happens to this day. But Chuck's big personality change was hard to swallow. He and Joe used to be friends and now they're acquaintances if that.
Other than that, I enjoyed the book. Joe and Faith are as reliable as the day is long. Bo and Nora fade more into the background but are there when needed. And of course, Mrs. Moore is a woman renewed after Joe saves her from a horrible fate.
I really liked the ending as fate (otherwise known as the author) contrives to bring things together. A very enjoyable end to a good book. 5/5*
As a person who struggles to draft a message on a birthday card, I marvel at Mr. Petit's inexhaustible imagination and prolific storytelling. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed all of his books at least twice, and am amazed at the variety in the characters, settings, and story lines. The one constant are the admirable qualities evidenced by the main characters, including honesty, diligence, hard work, and love of God and family. With all of the divisiveness and enmity in the world, his books are refreshing and a reminder of the positive impact a single person can have. God bless Mr. Petit.
Joe captures the bank robbers gets rewarded with a house and becomes a deputy sheriff
Chuck Lynch’s gold fever and bad attitude end up leading Joe to the job he always wanted. Chuck shoots his self and Joe saves him from going to jail after he tried to kill another man. Chuck and Marigold leaving Joe and Faith was a true blessing. Joe and Faith have found their home. I can’t wait to see what comes next for them. I would like to know Captain Chalmers makes his way home after being held prisoner and maybe visiting Joe and Faith in the future. C J Petit is one of my favorite authors
Another fantastic book by Mister Petit. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Even though this is not the last story in the series, I would be satisfied if it were. This truly feels like a turning point in Joe and Faith’s journey. I’m grateful that Joe did not put himself above the offer that came to him. The only thing that upset me was Chuck and especially Marigold’s behavior toward the end of the novel. It doesn’t impact the quality of the story in any way. It just saddens me to see these close-knit relationships that we’ve seen grow over the course of the series be pulled apart. Such is life. Keep on writing Mr. Petit! You’ll always have a reader with me.

I've enjoyed every one of C.j. Petit' s stories. Some I have enjoyed more than once or twice. I have loved this series of Joe and Faith Beck's journey across the country. And I have enjoyed the many troubles they have found on their way. I admire Joe's fortitude and and his awesome solutions to the wagon train's Indian attacks. Like all of Petit's books, this is an adventure story, a love story and a story that just grabs your attention and you can't wait to get your hands on the next book.
I can't wait for the next book. What an amazing author and story teller. If you haven't read his books you are missing some amazing western stories filled with adventure, excitement, action, and hope. He personifies the legacy of the western cowboy, treats his women characters with respect, his male characters are honest hard working western men, ranchers, law men, explorers, and pioneers. If you read one book you'll be eventually read them all because all of his books are different adventures and you'll never be bored.
I only have a few authors that I reallly like. C J Petit , B N Rundell, PAUL L Thompson, cant think of the other now, but it will come to me shortly.
shutup gurl, I've only had about 3, well maybe 8, whose is counting anyway? Anyhow, twas a great book. The Joe Beck series that is great.Stone croft was anothr boody good books. Sorry, gurls ans boys, uncle Ray is floating, where is that ddamn door to mu room.
When I read the adventures of Joe I can picture a man. With his reminders of his age I can imagine how a person would react. Mr. Petite has created a character that anyone who reads this series cannot help but wish their were more Joe Becks in society. I love the honest and compassionate people CJ. Petite has created in Joe and Faith. Hopefully we will see more of their adventures.
I love sequel books, I am always hale when C. J. Petit writes a series . This is the second set he has ever written. I have read every book written by Mr. Petit, it kid always such a thrill and enjoyment to sit down and read one of his books. I have loved every book and am always sad when they end. every book has always grabbed my attention from the very beginning and holds it all the way through to the end. I can't wait till the next book is released.
As always. The best of everything. I have read all the books in the series so far. I can't wait for each book. I have also read all of your books. I really like the way you write. I read until I am done. I like all the disruptions of the country and the problems they faced. You must study all the history of the old west. Thank you again always for a wonderful story.
I Love this Wonderful fifth book of Joe Beck and Faith. After reading 5 books I feel as though C.J. Petit brought them to life. The Characters in this series were very well developed and Interesting. I don't know where the author continues to come up with the stories. I was super excited when I realized there could be a 6th. Book. I hope we hear more of Officer Chalmers, Bo and Nora, And Will and Mary.
As Always, this C.J. Petit Book is just Wonderful!!!
I have Completely enjoyed this 5th Book in the Joe Beck Series!!! I Would like to Officially Recommend this and every other C.J. Petit Book to pantone who thinks they might enjoy a Western; and I guarantee that they will enjoy it and will search out more of his books to read!!! Mr. Petit is an exceptional Author!!! We are all very blessed to have him!!! Thank you Sir!!!!
This is another very good book By CJ. He has such a talent For bringing his characters to life it makes you sad when you get to the end of the book it's like losing family members. The characters do such a good job you wanna be friends with them He does have a fantastic talent For twisting the stories around and around And he keeps track of every item A very fantastic writer You enjoy every 1
A good ending to a great and imaginative series about the early West.
I am truly going to miss the ongoing adventures of young Joe Beck and his even younger wife, Faith. It was a treat riding along with the wagon train as it made its way through Unchartered lands. The dangers were many, Indians and outlaws, swollen rivers and endless grassland, all brought so vividly to life by this skilled author.
4 stars because I almost NEVER give 5. As usual, Mr Petit has turned out another really enjoyable, clean, entertaining and heartwarming read. And as usual, I stayed up most of the night reading it. I love his characters and the situations they get into as well as the humor in his stories. I can’t wait for the next.
Laramie Plains is an excellent read. Loved the changes and choices made as their journey nears its end and the wagons return to the apparent safety of civilization, and the unexpected twists and outcomes continue to surprise. Just wondering who will appear in the next book and who will be missing. Such an interesting time to transition to the next book. 👏🕯️💜
There are 5 books so far in this series, and I'm in the edge of my seat waiting for more.
This is a series about a boy's journey to manhood starting in 1857 and continuing on. It sounds like a yawn, but it drew me in as only C.J Petit novels can do. It has romance, adventure, heroism, and lots of western action. Enjoy!
I have been anxiously awaiting this addition to the Joe and Faith story. It did not disappoint. Now I just hope I can hold out for the next installment. If you haven't read the first 4 books, I highly recommend you do so as this whole series is awesome. I am now a diehard C. J. Petit fan!!
As a long time fan of western stories I am a hard critic. So many are written with inaccurate (no pun intended) firearm details it is a pleasure to read stories with the facts accurately portrayed. Can't wait for the next in the series.
This Joe Beck series of books had been wonderful. I hope there is another edition coming. I have enjoyed all 5 books..but this book moved me to tears...with the support the wagon train participants showed Joe and Faith when they left the train. Mr. Petit.... is Joe Beck ..a much younger version of yourself? Thank you for these books!
Absolutely wonderful story! From the beginning of the series all the way through this book!
It was great watching this young man Grow Into such an amazing And mature man At such a young age
I love all of C j's books Ace books and hope he is able to continue writing for a long time! God-bless you CJ And I'll continue praying for your health.
If this is really book 5 of 5. They continued to get better and the first one was great! I'm happy with the way things turned out but I want more!! I enjoy following Joe and Faith's life. It would be nice to continue. As I said before, I want to know about their children and grandchildren.
Mr. Petit, you've done it again. You have combined a shoot em up western, a love story and a good amount of history into a very entertaining story. I've been following Joe Beck for four books now and really hope you find a way to continue this series. You keep on writing and I'll keep reading them. Thanks.
Although the storyline was predictable, the Petit methodology of storytelling remains very prevalent. A great read with a well earned ending for the protagonists. Great character development and very clean reading! C.J. Petit remains one of my favorite authors.
I have read every book by C J Petit. I have loved EVERY one. He is a fantastic writer covering so many settings and personalities. I anxiously await book six in the Joe Beck series. While each is a stand alone book, the entire series is a fun read about Joe and Faith's adventures.
As young Joe Beck continues to mature the future which had seemed so distant begins staring him in the face. In an interesting turn of events he and Faith find their prayers answered in almost miraculous fashion. This whole series has been well worth the time it has taken to read and I look forward to following Joe and Faith as they grow into their adult years.
I just wanted more! Joe Beck is one of the most likeable characters I have experienced. I couldn't help thinking what a wonderful series this would make for one of the streaming channels, if it was kept true to the novels, and the right actors and actresses was cast. A humble / honest/slight mystical/ lead. This would be a huge hit !!
