Teagan Fraser had no idea what she was getting herself into when she took on an assignment as a live-in carer for Dulcie Adams – a retired dancer from a Soho club. Dulcie has waited forty years for her lover, Michael Pointer, to return, but she’s been living in hope for a time that never came and left looking after something important, which Jonah Powell and his firm want back.
In addition to the notorious Powell firm, there are others wanting to claim what they believe is rightfully theirs and they’ll do anything to get it back. If only Dulcie wasn’t around it would be a lot easier, but she’s difficult to shift…
A lot can happen in the space of two weeks and Teagan might wish she’d never become involved.
Fans of Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers and Jessie Keane will love An Old Score.
Over the years Edie has worked all over the UK, as well as in several other countries and has met a lot of interesting people - several of whom have supplied ideas for some of the characters in her books! She has now settled back in central England with her partner and children, where she is pursuing her writing.
Edie writes gritty gangland and urban fiction and her series so far include her latest - the Scarred series, the Allegiance series, the Retribution series, Hunted series and Downfall series.
When she isn’t writing, Edie enjoys reading and is a self-confessed book hoarder. She also enjoys crochet and music as well as loving anything quirky or unusual.
I have been looking forward to reading this book for a long while, not only because there was a personal character connection in the book. As I started the book I was a little worried as there appeared to be lots of characters to get to learn but I need not have been worried. I understand with this being a new series we had to meet all of the characters and get to know them and I love how as I progressed through the book I really got to know the characters and understand them. Personally, and this is only a personal part but I would like to have seen a little more location info and local dialect involved as I find that UK crime fiction really adds an extra dimension when you get an insight into the setting and local dialect of where the book is set. But don't let that put you off at all. Due to the nature of the plot the storylines had to keep changing and this can sometimes be difficult but the author wove these different lines into the story so well. The book was a real page turner and I loved all of the twists, turns and surprises that were peppered through the book. As well as being a great story the book also made me think a lot about abuse of the elderly and infirm whilst being 'cared for' by family and in care environments, especially when you think of the rise in dementia, etc and the pandemic that we are currently living through. This book is definitely one to start off 2021 with. Not only will the new year give us a turning point in the pandemic but this book will set the benchmark for the thriller genre. Many thanks to Edie Baylis for giving me the opportunity to read an advance review copy of this amazing book
Retribution Series Book one Feathers club Soho London Jonah Powell taking over the reins of the club from his father Jacky, his brother Saul is banged up for the slaughter of Sean O'Hara. Teagan Fraser takes on the job as a live in carer to Mrs Dulcie Adams the big victorian house has seen better days, her son Robert and daughter Helen seem to think she has dementia but she seems bright as a button to Teagan then she changes and things she says just doesn't make sense, Dulcie was a dancer at the Feathers back in the 60's. Jonah is looking for Dulcie for the matter of the pink diamonds they belong to the firm and he will pull out all the stops to get them. Once I got to know the characters in this book love or hate them I got right into the book it entails and draws you into a powerful read, this is my first read by Edie and she is certainly an author I will continue reading her work. If your looking for a good gangster crime this author is a one to look out for. well spent with a cracking ending 5*****
I was lucky enough to be given an ARC copy of this book, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. A well deserved 5 stars from me. It has you hooked from the very first page up until the very last. It has everything you'd want in a book, great storyline, lots of great characters...some you love, and some you love to hate. Very well written and has plenty of twists and turns that make it impossible to put down once you start it. Have to say it's one of the best books, if not THE best, I've read in a while, and people are definitely in for a treat with this one. If you're a fan of Martina Cole/Kimberley Chambers etc then this is definitely a book for you.
I have previously read another book by this author (The Status Debt), which was absolutely fantastic, so I was really looking forward to reading this one and I wasn’t disappointed.
The first book in the Retribution series, An Old Score is the perfect combination of gritty and involved plot lines full of betrayal and lies, mixed with an intriguing backstory involving the life of a retired cabaret dancer, Dulcie Adams.
Teagan is booked as a live-in carer for Dulcie at her large, but rather run-down house and develops an affinity for the older lady – caring very much about her welfare. Dulcie, however has a involved past which is now coming back to haunt her and brings with it others who want back what they believe she has. But who can be trusted? Dulcie’s own family, along with members of a firm of gangsters that she betrayed, amongst others are all after something.
The book is packed with loads of extremely well-written characters, involved plot-lines and sub-plots and twists, but it is written so well that there is no confusion as to who is who or what is going on and I really did not expect the final big twist at the end at all. It is clear that there is a lot more to come and so I’ll definitely be keeping a look out for the next book in the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and especially like this author’s unique writing style and mix of characters, making the books that I’ve read of hers so far a refreshing change from a lot of others. A well-deserved 5 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the digital ARC. My opinions on the book are unbiased, honest and voluntary.
Having read and loved The Hunted series by Edie Baylis previously, I was worried that this series had a lot to live up to. I need not have worried as I loved this just as much. The characters were really well written, so much so that I don’t think I’ve ever read a book where I have disliked so many of the characters!!! So many people only out for themselves and willing to do whatever it took to get their hands on the “stolen goods”. All the different characters’ story lines were intricately woven together by the author, and definitely kept me turning the pages. If you want a gritty story that covers gangsters, an old love story, greed, divided family loyalties, and touches on the subject of potential abuse of elderly relatives with dementia, then this has it all. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Dulcie and Teagan next, so will definitely be reading the next in the series.
This book is filled with diverse and interesting characters who you want good things to happen to, even some of the bad guys. Then there are those that you want to meet horrible ends. Having read other books by this author, I know that some are going to, but she also doesn’t shy away from harming the good guys, so I am expecting that not everything will turn out the way I want it to. There are many twists and turns, but it doesn’t get confusing. It’s interesting and well-paced and makes you want to keep reading more. It even had my heart racing at some points. I can’t wait for book 2 to come out.
I have read a couple of novels by Eddie Baylis and have found her novels readable and something I can get my teeth into waiting now for the follow-up of this novel .Her books are all different and a good read I would recommend her .Eddie baylis is worth 5stars .
A fantastic gritty story. When Teagen takes on the job as a live in carer for Dulcie she has no idea what she's getting herself into. Lots of twist and turns throughout that keeps the story moving at a brilliant pace. Really good read.
Wow! What an absolutely fabulous read, well written with excellent pacing. A really gritty read that hooked me in from page 1. Brilliant characters (although there were quite a lot) Edie managed to flesh them out and make them ‘relatable’ 5* read
I really enjoyed this book. Very well written, and quite the page turner. Many thanks to TBC for allowing me to review this book. Looking for ward to more by the author
Superb, a story which hits the ground running with plenty of intrigue. Three families all seeking the same goal, whatever it takes. Lots of intertwined themes to get your teeth into- greed, gangsters, money, love stories and divided family loyalties to name but a few. There are a lot of characters to keep track of but the writer expertly guides you through and I was grateful that there were subtle reminders to who is who! Maybe it also helped that my daughter shares her name with the lead character (nice to see a Dulcie in print!) and my husband is Peter, nice coincidences, but not so sure about my namesake in the story! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be seeking out more by the same author.
This is a gripping gangland crime thriller that had me hooked from start to finish. The gritty, fast paced storyline had me reading well into the night as I could not put this book down. The story is full of deception and lies and the plot definitely kept me guessing, and made this a real page turner of a novel. Teagan Fraser takes an assignment to be a live in carer for a retired dancer from a Soho club, Dulcie Adams, but she doesn’t know what she’s taken on. For over forty years Dulcie has been left looking after something important, which her then lover, Michael Pointer left behind. The trouble is Jonah Powell and his notorious firm want it back, but there are others who believe it is rightfully theirs, and all of them will do anything to get it back, including getting rid of Dulcie. An exciting and enjoyable read and one which I definitely recommend, I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
This is book 1 in the new Retribution Series and having read a few books by this author I can say this has definitely been my favourite. It’s really well written and a well thought out plot.
Briefly, Teagan has gone to work for Dulcie Adams as a live in carer. Dulcie, a former dancer and lover to a gangster, who disappeared 40 years ago, appears to be suffering from dementia and needs care. However, Teagan has landed in the middle of a gangland feud and her own life is in danger...
I enjoyed this book a lot and look forward to book 2. Note for the author, I will happily come and deal with Luna for you...
I have been patiently waiting to read this book and it didn't disapoint! I was hooked from the beginning, with the characters pulling themselves into my heart. There were a lot of characters and I was aware I may lose track of who was who, but I had nothing to worry about as this story was so well written it just flowed with ease. I feel so invested in the characters I am eagerly anticipating book 2. Highly recommended!
Brilliant read, recommend to readers of Martina Cole etch.,
This author is on par if not better than Martina Cole. This book has you enthralled and you just can't put it down. Looking forward to the sequel due in April. So pleased to have found Edie.
I really enjoyed this book. It was full of diverse characters and the storyline is good. Once I’d started reading it, it’s was hard to put down and now I’m onto the next book in the series and can’t wait to find out what happens to them all.
This was an interesting read. The story has an old world charm to it, with its mention of cabaret dancers and crime bosses.
The plot revolves around Dulcie Adams who has been waiting since 1965 for her lover Michael to come for her. Before he left the last time, he had entrusted a bag of jewels with her, which he had stolen from his boss, Jacky Powell, of the Powell firm. Now forty years later, Dulcie is living alone in the house that Michael had bought for them, unaware of the sudden interest that has raked up in her life. Teagan Fraser takes up a six-month temp job as a live-in carer for Dulcie. Her only aim was to earn enough money to rent a house for her boyfriend Joe and herself so that their relationship could move forward. But she has unknowingly stepped into the drama that is slowly unfurling around her 65-year old employer.
An Old Score, as the name suggests, is a story of revenge and greed. There are way too many characters, all waiting to to pounce upon the unsuspecting Dulcie, and it gets a tad tedious to keep track of all of them. Dulcie, however, with her passion for life, her fierce defense of Teagan in front of Joe and her undying love for Michael, remains my favourite.
Overall, this was an engaging novel. A big thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book in The Retribution series by Edie Baylis. What a read, what more can I say. I really did enjoy this books. I was gripped from start to finish. An Old Score (Retribution Book 1) by Edie Baylis BooksGoSocial Mystery & Thrillers Pub Date 28 Dec 2020 I am reviewing a copy of An Old Score through BooksGoSocial and Netgalley: Due to strong language and intense subject matter I would not recommend this book to those under the age of seventeen. Teagan Fraser is clueless at to what she is getting herself into after taking an assignment as a live in caring for Dulcie Adams — a retired dancer from a Soho club. Dulcie has waited for her lover Michael Pointer, to return, but she has been living in hope for a long time, and he has never come he left looking after something important, which Jonah Powell and his firm want back. It isn’t only the other to the notorious Powell firm, there are others wanting to claim what they believe is rightfully theirs and they’ll do anything to get it back. Teagan soon learns that a lot can happen in a period of two weeks and soon finds herself wishing she had never came involved. If you are looking for an intriguing, fast paced mystery, I recommend an Old Score! I give this book four out of five stars! Happy Reading!
This is my first read by this author .... and wow, I thought this was a cracker of a read. Three families all after the same thing and who will do anything to get it. This book had everything I love - great characters I either liked or loathed, it was full of lies and deceit and so many plot twists. I was hooked from the first page to the last and thought this was one fast paced thrilling read that really grabbed my attention. I loved the authors writing style and that the book was told through the different characters and enjoyed the small bits of humour in it. The last part of the book raced to a final conclusion which had me literally on the edge of my seat. Can’t wait for the next book, it can’t come soon enough for me.
Overall 4.5* A new series from Edie and this book did not disappoint. It's a classic story of when thieves (and families) fall out along with love, greed and how innocent parties can be caught up into situations which they have no control over. There is a lot going on in the story however Edie so carefully intertwines it all that you do not become confused and it makes this a great page turner. I read this book as an ARC for my book club.
I was really looking forward to reading this book but was confused, there were so many characters, and reading about one of the characters it was switched to another without any warning. The ending was disappointing for me as I wanted to know what happened to Leah it seemed to be left up in the air. I did read it to the end but was left deflated. I don't like leaving negative feedback but then it wouldn't be honest.
Dulcie has a past. It's complicated and full of secrets. She may be losing her mind. Teagan is hired to help care for Dulcie, as the past comes rushing in and it seems like everyone has ulterior motives. The overlapping stories weave together, uncovering layers of relationships. An entertaining read.
I found the first few episodes good explaining who everyone was , then it went slow so rushed 3 chapters. Then it becam e gripping, lots of different angles, interesting bits put in. Then I couldn't put it down until the interesting end. I did get cross when people weren't been found out quickly enough. Yes great book
