Percy Polar Bear: Changing Times

Rate this book
The times are changing for the inhabitants of the world's largest island of Greenland.

Percy is an eleven year old polar bear; who is noticing that the world for him, is becoming different. Readers go on a journey with Percy to search for food and join the battle to stay alive in this harsh, but enjoyable world for a polar bear. Percy tries hard to find food and then love, as the reader becomes invested in Percy's plight to win the heart of Kâlîna; a female polar bear.

Percy Polar Bear gives you his perspective on the changing nature of the habitat in which the Polar Bears of Greenland live. Go along with Percy, as 'Anniita the Arctic Fox' tags along; looking to pick off the scraps of food that Percy may leave behind. The search for food, as Percy openly tells you, becomes more and more difficult with each passing year. The world is changing and Percy is trying to make sense of it. The story introduces you to the world's largest island of Greenland. Through Percy's point of view you get to marvel at this piece of the world, whilst reflecting upon the changes to the climate that are affecting life in this marvellous place.

When Anniita the Arctic Fox follows behind Percy in his search for food, it allows the introduction of the biological concept of commensalism - where one species obtains food or other benefits from the other without either harming or benefiting the latter. This helps to achieve a balance between an engaging story; centered around a search for food and recognizing and adapting to change, whilst incorporating true facts about the habitat and the creatures that live there.

Join Percy on the journey to food and to discovery; learning how to embrace and adapt to the changing world. There is an unavoidable distraction for Percy on the road to survival and understanding the changing world. Kâlîna is the most radiant and sweet smelling polar bear that he has even come across. Percy also tries to rise to the challenge of winning Kâlîna's, but he must compete with the young polar bear; Salik for that honour.

*Author's note; this book is perfectly suitable to be read independently by those aged 7 years old upwards. However, parent / adult commentary may be required for chapter 6. This book is fully supportive of Montessori education and is an honest, updated account of the world of the modern polar bear. Therefore, the theme of animal cannibalism is touched upon in chapter 6. This is covered in an objective, non-glorified way and is a key to understanding the modern world in which the polar bear dwells.*

When I first downloaded the book, I wasn't sure what to expect out of it but I did think that the story would be similar to the fables I heard when I was young, like the crow and the pebble or the fox and the grapes. But this was very different from those because they had a lesson at the end while this was informative throughout. This is a story spanning the four seasons - summer, winter, autumn and spring - in the North Pole narrated by a polar bear from his perspective.

It is a story about global warming and its effects on the North Pole, especially on the animals - how the ice is melting and the food is difficult to come by. And how everything eventually affects the food chain and would one day end up affecting us all, probably sooner than we anticipate. Since this is a short story, I don't want to divulge much about the exact storyline but I can say that this is a very good way to teach the younger kids about the world and how things have changed due to global warming, the sustainable activities we should undertake to avoid the mistakes and crimes that our elders (and sometimes even a woke population age group such as ours) committed against nature and how we can live in harmony with nature while not completely compromising on the lives that we currently have.

I read this book to my six year old twins and my two year old with a bit of modification and they loved the story. They recommend it and so do I. This was a quick read and I finished it in twenty minutes. And I loved the illustrations.

I really loved this book. It was recommended on TikTok and is based on a subject that haven’t stopped thinking about for a while. This is amazing.
