The strength in these poems, I believe, is Joel's skill in writing his political and cultural concerns of queer-ness, Filipino-ness, multilingualism and immigrant status unabashedly, and transitioning from live, dynamic, even bombastic performance to formal poetic rigor. I hope that makes sense.
