Mary has always felt a special connection with nature, frequently seeing faces in trees. Spending time in nearby woods, she finds respite from her job in healthcare where she works as a speech pathologist. Mary soon discovers other earth spirits have sensed her ability to communicate and have chosen her to deliver a message that will influence our earth's soil and everything that comes from it. Seeking to enlighten humanity, an initially reluctant Mary is emboldened by a ninety-seven-year-old patient to embark on a journey of inner healing and outer discovery. Mary soon encounters others who have also been marked to carry the earth's message. As their collective efforts become an expansive movement, the impact of the message amplifies, and the earth begins to sense something relief. Hi! Thanks for reading my bio. I hail from northern Michigan but was a mountain girl for decades in the foothills of Colorado. After retiring from life as a speech-language pathologist I wrote what I knew making the main character in my debut novel, an SLP. But that was merely a segue to the magic Mary encounters in the forest! My second novel The Nickel Loop is a time travel historical novel...all my favorite genres in one place.

I've written all my life. As an adolescent, I won a state wide essay contest with trip to a presidential inauguration. I published a journal, Minderings. You can find me on Substack with the same name, Minderings...a place for the wandering of your mind. Posts are varied and never boring. Usually something that sets my brain on fire.
Nancy's always loved the magical realism genre, but didn't have a name for it when reading the Half Magic series as a child.
*I received this novel for free in exchange for an honest review*
This novel is quite different from what I normally read and that is what attracted me to reading it. And I certainly did not regret this decision.
Whispers for Terra highlights some very important issues about the environment and how the soil that we farm in is treated, that often get overlooked. It certainly makes you think and consider this, and I certainly will be more aware when buying products in future!
However, as well as this the story is the personal journey of a woman who walks through life existing rather than living since the breakup of her marriage. She has friends but when the novel begins, she is very much detached from them, her job and everything else in life. The discovery of her gift is a new beginning for her also and it is wonderful to watch Mary become the person that she was always meant to be. She overcomes her self-doubt and gains a newfound confidence as well as a new circle of friends and purpose.
Whispers for Terra really gets you thinking about deeper issues and journeys of self-discovery. If you want to try something a bit different, then this is the book I recommend!
Whispers for Terra is an engaging, well written, lovely story of finding your voice! We are all so much more than we comprehend! Our connection to the earth and all energy forms is a discussion for now! I found the story most interesting and it spoke to my heart and reaffirmed that we each can make a difference. I do admit I was sad when the story ended, as I enjoyed the characters very much. Thank you for sharing this insightful, engaging story with the planet! Looking forward to more writing from Nancy! So proud of your accomplishments and persuasiveness Congratulations on a great book and showing true compassion and writing abilities.
As much as this story is about the health of our earth and soil, it is also about the power of one. One woman coming into her own, finding her voice and making a change. It was inspiring to read about Mary's journey and how she was guided and prodded by the love and support of people around her. Sometimes it's those that surround us that can best help us see our true potential.
An interesting and original concept. I particularly enjoyed learning about the speech pathology profession, which surprised me. The medical side of things comes to life via the thoughtful connections built with the protagonists patients. A story about how nature heals, and how in turn we can heal it.
Nancy Houser-Bluhm’s magical realism novel, Whispers for Terra, follows the story of a speech pathologist Mary Keeley as she comes to terms with her job burnout to embrace her bond with nature and become an advocate for the earth. Although she is sustained by her love for her elderly patients, Mary seeks something bigger. She befriends a crew of like-minded individuals who become her tribe and encourage her along her journey of helping the trees.
Before reading this book, I never thought about trees communicating with us. The trees speak without saying a word. Now, even in my urban setting, I can’t walk past a tree on the sidewalk without seeing it in a new light.
This is a novel for an imaginative reader who is moved by nature.
Whispers for Terra, by Nancy Houser-Bluhm, brings to light a world issue using a reflective, relatable character who feels like a close friend. As the story unfolds, readers are in for a ride when the life energy of the forest opens the eyes of others and a meaningful purpose gains momentum. With humor, poetry, connection and love, Houser-Bluhm paints a picture and tells a story of hope.
Whispers for Terra is a fantasy about nature reaching out to human kind. Mary, a communications specialist, gradually discovers that she has been chosen to develop and then lead efforts to restore our deteriorating environment. She later finds that she is not alone.
The book develops at a good pace and with a plot that held my interest to the last page, leaving me disappointed that the read was over.
Whispers for Terra is a well-written and well-researched book. The author did an outstanding job of conveying the human impact on the environment from the perspective of nature. It was a point of view I had never considered and yet it has left its mark on me. Never again will I enter a forest and overlook the life forms around me.
Whispers for Terra is a hopeful story of what a small group can accomplish, the excitement of something positive going viral, and how a person can over come their personal fears. Most of all it is a story of the life in our forests, the soul of our forest, and the life in the soil that needs our awareness.
