Name of Book: Post Traumatic
Author: Ronald Simonar
Narrator: Dennis Heath
Publisher: Dreamscape
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Pub Date: May 30, 2022
My Rating: 2.5 rounded up Stars!

Story was intended to be a screenplay.
There is a lot going on in this thriller. Some things are very disturbing.

Dr. Caroline Glyn-Griffith and her now deceased husband Dr. Robert Kinngsley Griffin were very actively involved in cancer research. They have a young daughter Mary who is in kindergarten and attending an elite school. She has a new friend Krupskaya who is in her class. is their daughter.
Babushka is Mary’s rag doll. Krupskaya (5, Aleksei’s daughter) is her new friend.

The disturbing things made this difficult for me to read.

I love a good audiobook but sure am particular about narrators. There were times narrator Dennis Heath was great in performing the characters and other time not so much.

Trigger warnings there is some unnecessary use of racist words and there is a sexual assault that takes place.

Aside from the trigger warnings, this was a good story that did have me turning the pages to see what would be happening next. You will be hooked from the prologue forward, with Dr. Caroline Glyn, a cancer researcher, who makes an acquaintance with this very cold-ish, grumpy, older man Mr. Rykov at their daughters' school one morning. That meeting, as random as it might have seemed set off a series of events that will change the life of both Dr. Glyn and Mr. Rykov. From mystery to thriller Posttraumatic has it all, and even some mystical situation occurs that is just mind-blowing. Dr. Caroline does many things with the help of Mr. Rykov that not even she thought possible, we see how even Agent Smith, an FBI agent, has a hard time understanding some things but the three of them work together to fulfill Mr. Rykov's legacy and solidify Dr. Caroline Glyn's future.

I want to quote a line from an outside review by 'Lili' and to echo her insightful sentiments. I also found Posttraumatic interesting, intriguing, absorbing, surprising, violent, sadistic and shocking. This story of the intricacies of the mind, a mind taken over, had even me hooked and the search in the Asylum cellars almost stopped me breathing. I too was saved by the delicious ending.

ARC audiobook provided by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

“Posttraumatic” is the story of Dr. Caroline Glyn-Griffith, an expert scientist specializing in the study of malignant cells. Caroline is recently widowed, her husband having died of a mysterious brain tumor, and is living with her young daughter, Mary, in Washington, D.C. One day, while dropping Mary off at kindergarten, Caroline has a chance meeting with Mary’s new friend, Krupskaya, and her father, Aleksei Ivanovich. Little does she know that this meeting hasn’t really been by chance, and it will change everything.

Unknown to Caroline, Aleksei Ivanovich is veteran of the Cold War and a confidant of Stalin; a man who is reportedly the head of the Russian mob in Washington, D.C. The events that follow that morning turn Caroline’s life upside down and place her daughter in danger. Violence erupts and Caroline and Aleksei Ivanovich are brought together by a seemingly supernatural occurrence. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game reminiscent of a Cold War thriller: Caroline is hunted by Russians throughout the city. However, Caroline is not to be counted out. Utilizing her new gift, Caroline seeks to turn the tables and become the hunter.

I was drawn to the description of this book, which to me appeared to set it up as a mystery/thriller with a supernatural angle. While there is a supernatural element, the book mostly reads like a modern-day Cold War thriller. There’s the Russian mob with ties to the Cold War, government entities both in concert with the Russians and striking back against them. Then there’s the woman caught in the center and her daughter, who is used as a pawn against her. Add a slight supernatural twist to fortify the woman against the Russians who hunt her, spice it with some sex and unethical behavior, and you have the gist of this novel.

I must say the book does offer an original twist to a Cold War-esque thriller, which, given the present (2022) situation across the globe, seems quite on point. The book is a race against time, pulling the reader along for the ride as Caroline struggles with her new supernatural gift and the escalating situation around her. I do wish that the supernatural element was explored more, offering a more detailed explanation of how it originated and why Caroline was chosen to wield it. It was such an original premise and an important plot tool, but to me it wasn’t explored quite enough.

That being said, the book is a “page-turner,” a well-paced thriller that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. Even when characters make eye-rolling, inane decisions, the tension builds as the book proceeds, and ends with a fitting bloody confrontation. I tore through this book quickly, wanting to see what would happen next and how it would resolve.

My ARC copy of this book was an audiobook, so I must also comment on the narrator. As a whole, I think this narrator did a good job with this book, including character voices and pacing. At times, the narrative parts did feel a bit over-dramatized, but it was not enough to fully throw me out of the story.

Overall, I thought this was an interesting take on a classic thriller. I would recommend it to adult readers (due to some content that may not be appropriate for young adults) who are fans of the thriller and mystery genres. However, if you’re a purely supernatural fan, this book may not be for you as the core of the novel seems to be more thriller than supernatural, even with the supernatural twist. All things considered, this is a four-star read for me, and I’m interested to see if a sequel will follow since the book appears to set itself up for one. If you’re looking for an original take on a thriller, and more specifically, a Cold War-esque thriller, this book is for you!

Our doctor Caroline is a very successful scientist in Washington DC she is a widow and has a daughter named Mary. When dropping her daughter off at the elite kindergarten she goes to. She meets a man whose daughter babushka looks just like a little Mary. It isn’t until she’s pulling out when she sees a man sneaking out of the trees that she was alerted to something being wrong. She quickly forgets and goes to work and then later that day picks up little Marie and all hell breaks loose. This book was so good if this is the kind of books in Ronald Simonar right they should invent a new word for thriller. When I say this book was all over the place I mean that in the most awesome of great ways. In the CIA, the KGB on and on there’s just so much usually I can figure out what’s happening, but I couldn’t with this book and I’m so glad I did and it was so worth getting to the end for. So if you like great twist and even greater plot get this book it was awesome. I listen to the audiobook and thought the narrator did a great job he was British and had such a good character reference but it almost sounds like other people are doing the voices. I highly recommend this book and gave it five stars and would give it five more if I could. I was given this book by net galley and I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any grammar or punctuation errors as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own. #NetGalley, #RonaldSeminer

Posttraumatic by Ronald Simonar is a fast paced thriller involving a Washington, D.C. based scientist, Dr Caroline Glyn who unwittingly becomes involved in a sinister conspiracy. There are some exciting action sequences that kept me turning the pages, however the plot was entirely implausible to me. It went in several different directions, left some clues and never entirely answered all the questions to my satisfaction. The characters were flat, stereotypical and one dimensional. Some of the dialogue was downright offensive to me as a woman. I feel as though there could have been a more creative way to express some of interactions that I speak of. One of the most important plot devices is not really explained. I listened to the audiobook version and the narrator had a British accent. The setting is the United States of America. All the characters are either American or Russian. There were several words that were either pronounced the British way or wrong (Potomac). I found that annoying for a novel that is set in the US. Thanks your Netgalley for this audiobook edition.

Posttraumatic: 5-star editorial review by Anne-Marie Reynolds for Readers’ Favorite
One of the most gripping stories I have ever read.

Posttraumatic by Ronald Simonar is one of the most gripping stories I have ever read. This is one story that deserves every ounce of your attention, with its tense, thrilling plot and the many twists and turns the story takes you on. A real page-turner, this is an edge-of-your-seat thriller, a unique story that will take you on a journey you will never forget. Well-paced, it has plenty of drama, action, and suspense and the main character is one you will connect with on all levels, a strong female lead with a "mama bear" attitude. Crooked officials, the Russian Mafia, and one woman determined to beat them all to get her daughter back is a tale that could very well have the makings of a hit movie.

Posttraumatic: 5-star editorial review by K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite
It will steal your heart, as it did mine.

I love stories that are hard to pin down to just one genre, and author Ronald Simonar has crafted one of those tales that you can hardly describe to friends, other than to say that they simply must read it. There was so much going for such a concise and fast-paced novel, with plenty of interesting twists and new layers from the different genre styles mashing together wonderfully. Another feature of the novel that I truly enjoyed on a deeper level was the characterization of Caroline and her experience of posttraumatic stress, which was heartfelt and intricately portrayed with a keen sense of the realities of this debilitating emotional state. Overall, Posttraumatic is an ideal read for thriller fans seeking an action-packed story with plenty of fascinating mystery, tense thrills, and an authentic emotional core that will certainly steal your heart, as it did mine.

Posttraumatic: 5-star editorial review by Rabia Tanveer for Readers’ Favorite.
Pleasure to read and reread until you become one with the pages.

Traditionally written with a very unique approach, Posttraumatic is a pleasure to read and reread until you become one with the pages. The idea of the story is fantastic and its execution even better. Caroline is the kind of protagonist that you feel an emotional connection with and root for until the end. Author Ronald Simonar paces the story just right and slowly but surely introduces the conflict into the story before smacking readers with intense suspense and drama to make them sweat. I was completely absorbed in the story, looking for clues, and hoping for answers that would unfold the mystery even a little bit. The addition of the Russian mafia and crooked cop felt as much a part of the story as the FBI agents did. I loved the dialogues, the intensity of the plot, and the action. I will not be surprised if the story becomes a movie or a TV series in the future because Caroline is the type of protagonist that people will love. The cinematic quality of the story is off the charts. I loved it!

“Posttraumatic” a superb story; interesting, intriguing, surprising, violent, sadistic and shocking. A story of the intricacies of the mind, a mind taken over; a thrilling read that keeps the reader enthralled throughout. The opera of the asylum is vividly painted; the writing extremely visual, some scenes may halt you, you may question what is written but you will be completely absorbed as the shock, horror and disbelief unfold. I could not put this book down. Author Ronald Simonar kindly let me read his manuscript in the early stages I enjoyed it then and still do. I am so pleased Ronald decided to publish. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who likes dark thrillers. I loved reading “Posttraumatic”
Here is also an excerpt from my original opinion I gave to Ronald, not in full otherwise it would spoil the suspense.
Lili’s review of Posttraumatic
Hi Ronald, well I’ve completed “Posttraumatic” a superb story that will make a fantastic novel. I found it interesting, intriguing, absorbing, surprising, violent, sadistic and shocking. A story of the intricacies of the mind, a mind taken over, I enjoyed reading it and was kept enthralled throughout.
I understand that the original intention you had for it, was to be a play and I see that intention, in the vivid description you painted of the opening scene. A brilliant description, I pictured it in my mind as if I were watching a scene from a film. The opera of the asylum was vividly painted. (I can honestly say I have experienced this as I worked in a mental hospital (elderly geriatrics on an open ward) for some time. However there were times when I had to venture in to the locked wards, here the worst cases resided and here also was this great cacophony of sound)

“ ‘Jesus! ’The memory came at her out of the blue, her hands in surgical gloves hoisting a yellow spotted liver from a gaping abdomen”.

As for some of the descriptive writing of the events portrayed I said to Ronald “God forbid that anything like that has ever happened to anyone, I’m sure you are going to tell me that it has.”

There is incredible violence in the hotel and then again in the basement of the Asylum. The search in the cellars almost stopped me breathing. This was an exceptionally scary, depraved scene, with enormous amounts of blood and gore.

Ronald, I loved this book, I enjoyed reading it, at times I was confused by it, but I was also enthralled by it. I’m sure many more people will also enjoy reading Posttraumatic. You should publish and long may you continue with your superb writing. Lili

You (reader) figure it out!

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written covert thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great spy movie, or mini TV series. To be continued? A very easy rating of 5 stars.

I have never read an uncorrected proof and found it hard going at times because of the foreign names.

Other than that I really enjoyed the fast paced, sometimes frightening but almost believable story.

A riveting psychological thriller that had my heart pounding at times.
The description of Washington DC brought the capital to life and also showed a different side to that that we usually see.
The asylum was really scary, just by thought of it at the beginning and after entering it toward the end of the story - I held my breath and gasped.

Highly recommend this book.

Am not sure about this book. Has Russian mob, our politicians, a Dr. seeking a cure for cancer.torture, murder and children. Had a dirty cop who rapes a 15 year old comatose girl. A murder of one child and kidnapping of another. Then the female dr. seeking a cancer cure is body snatched by a dead mob boss. Read abd try to figure it out yourself. Am still confused but was interested enough to finish even though many scenes were sickening.

*I won this book through a goodreads giveaway*

I really enjoyed the idea of this story. Honestly I wanted more. Some parts seemed unnecessary and others weren't thourough enough. There were numerous editing issues that were irritating while reading. (i.e. words missing, wrong pronoun used) The story ended too soon and too "neatly" for me., but I enjoyed reading it!

A riveting psychological thriller that was over before I was ready to let it go. I read Posttraumatic in one sweep and the story held me enthralled. There is a sort of humorous kindness in there that takes the edge of some nauseating scenes and there are so many beautifully written passages.

Just beginning this Goodreads' giveaway win. The author noted this was once a screenplay and I feel that some of the choppiness I'm seeing at the beginning is a result of the conversion into a novel.
