The subtitle of this book is ‘A new author’s guide to publishing and marketing for success’, and it totally delivers on this promise. This easy-to-read book is jam-packed with essential information that all writers should have at their fingertips. Indeed, I found myself highlighting passages and links for future reference.
The advice and resources in this book are invaluable, and the bonus is that it’s all given in a very pithy and entertaining manner. With this book, the author has done a huge service to the self-publishing community. He has generously shared his experience so that new writers can save time, money and possibly heartbreak. Hopefully, his warnings will be heeded, and fewer newbies will fall for cons and scams. Yes, unfortunately, that still happens. But it doesn’t have to. Knowledge is power, so read this book!
For those of us who intend to make a career of writing, we need to educate ourselves about the business of publishing. That is exactly what this author has managed to do. He has circumvented the self-inflicted (often torturous and unsatisfying) route of trad pub to a fast and effective self-pub one. Sure, he did so by chance at first, but then took the time to study what works and what doesn’t, making himself an expert in the process.
Indie authors, run to get your copy, read and apply. Here is someone who’s done the work so you don’t have to. Make the most of it.
If you're looking for a self help book to take you step by step through the self publishing process, and beyond, this is a great self starter. As an author myself, having this book at the beginning of my career would've made things easier. Having read this book 5 years later has helped grow my brand, and has taken me beyond the Amazon KDP publishing stage to national author.
So you have a supergood idea for a book. And you have written it down (using the pants, plan or snowflake method). What now?
Read this book. You, too, can publish your book. And you can do it by yourself for free. Yes, there are some things that are going to be better if you pay someone, but you CAN do them all yourself. Even the marketing.
And TW tells you how. He even tells you where to go for any more (FREE) information that you need.
Since I'm the author of this book, I'm not giving it a rating. It seems unethical to me to rate my own book. I have another purpose here. I'm writing this review for people who are considering writing a book but have no clue where to start. I guess it's more of a note than a review.
I published my first book ever in August of 2020. It's a fictional police thriller based on real-life events. I wrote my first novel for fun. I decided to publish it on a whim.
I did no research at all. I didn't look up anything online. I didn't join any author groups, and I never asked anyone anything. I simply read the directions on how to self-publish on Amazon's KDP and did it. That was all I did. It was one of the easiest things I've ever done.
I never thought for one minute that my first self-published fiction novel would do anything. But it did. It went to a #1 bestseller in under 48 hours in one of its categories. It was also rated in the top ten in several more categories. It fell off the charts within a few months because I had no clue how to keep it there. But I love writing, so I decided to do some research and see if I could actually make a living self-publishing books. (Turns out you can.)
So who do you go to when you want to learn something? Go to the people who do it for a living. I searched for the most successful indie authors in the business. I found hundreds of them and started asking questions. They were all wonderful and helpful. They gave me several suggestions.
I took lots of free and paid classes by self-published authors who make six figures a year. I read all the articles and books on self-publishing that I could get my hands on. They were written by the same indie authors. I watched their videos daily. I learned everything I could. I discovered I did just enough right by accident in the beginning to get a lot of sales. Unfortunately, I had no clue how to keep the momentum going.
Now I know what I'm doing. I know how to write, what to write, when and where to publish, and how to market my own books. That's why I wrote this book, so you won't have to spend years doing the research I did.
One of the things I discovered is that the internet is filled with horrible advice when it comes to self-publishing. I've never seen more crooks, con artists, and frauds anywhere than lurking in the self-publishing community. Those are the ones spreading all the misinformation online. I'd have to say that about 99% of what a new author would find on the internet about self-publishing is 100% wrong. It was written by scammers for the sole purpose of taking your money.
I wrote this book for new authors. I don't want anyone to get conned out of their hard-earned money or lose the rights to their work. That literally happens every single day in this profession. Like I said, I've never seen a profession with more scammers than the self-publishing profession. (And I was a cop for 25 years in a town with over 100 thousand people.)
I've shared everything I've learned from the best in the self-publishing industry. These are authors who have sold millions, made millions, and were willing to teach me and others.
I've also shared everything I've learned from firsthand experience when publishing my own fictional novel. I've shared everything I did correctly, which was very little, and I've shared everything I screwed up during that process. Most of what I did was wrong. If you're interested, maybe I can save you from making the same mistakes I, along with almost every first-time indie author, make.
If you have any plans of writing and self-publishing books, please take a few hours to read my book, How to Self-Publish Your Book for Free and Not Get Conned. It takes about two hours.
If you can't afford it or don't want to risk buying it, follow me on Facebook. I'll gladly give you a .pdf of the self-edited copy of this book for free if you ask me. I'll also give you a list of everything I've learned about this trade since I wrote this book. I constantly post new information on Facebook about self-publishing.
If you're simply a book lover and only like to read, this book will probably be boring to you. But if you're an aspiring author, please take the time to either buy my book or follow me on Facebook. The more you know about how this business works, the less likely you'll fall for one of these scams. They really are everywhere. Please don't get taken for thousands of dollars because you don't understand how the business works.
If you are interested in this topic, I wish you all the best.
Probably one of the most daunting tasks to any indie writer is not so much calming the voices in one’s head that push us to write: done right or wrong, well or poorly, one must; else, we might go bonkers. Far harder, once books emerge from our battle against the white page, is to properly market them. The market is full of offers that sound too good to be true and are; of overpriced services, and flatterers; of people who know how to prey on newcomers, and do. TW Robinson’s book is an eye opener, a valuable raft in a sea full of sharks and sirens, a money and time saver, a clear map showing how to get things done right, spending carefully—overall, a great resource that makes the process from manuscript to marketable book far less stressful, more systematic, and, in my opinion, much more productive.
This book is authored by a former cop. He talks simply and stresses how new writers are conned, and then he goes on to show you how these scammers do it. Advice he repeats over and over is that no publisher ever requests payment in order to publish your book. EVER.
I can’t stress enough how this little book should be a must read for every one starting to write, has just finished a book, or is thinking about writing.
This book is a very quick read but it delivers a great message: you can publish your own book. It focuses on two things 1) NOT falling for scams, a methodical lists all scenarios that may take place, and 2) publishing your book. There are no graphics, no fancy formatting, just straightforward information plus resources. This book is a great place to start your writing journey once you think of the business side of the equation.
This book is very encouraging for anyone pursuing the self-publishing route. I enjoyed the author's style - it was like sitting at a coffee shop with a friend who doesn't pull their punches when offering advice. I'll be reading this again and again as I continue my author journey.
This book is a great tool for young authors that need guidance when it comes to indie publishing. It will give you insights on what and whom to avoid and answers many questions that I know most of us have about the publishing industry. The author did months of research and the information is dire on how not to get ripped off by many many in this industry. It is a must read for many!!
I would recommend this book to anyone trying to figure out the self-publishing process. Great advice about how to be successful and to navigate the industry.
I'm a new author, and this has saved me from making a huge mistake with a vanity publisher. When I looked them up, you guessed it they were on the naughty list. Now I'm working this myself. Thank you TW!
Easy to read, valuable information. I read this book in 2 hours, and it left me thinking about everything I did wrong with my book and what I could do next.
It also encourages me to dig further to become a successful author.
I found this book on Facebook, bought it & read it. I love how he’s honest about what he’s learned. His passion shows through w/ some of the language used in his writing. I recommend this book to any author coming up in the ranks.
#TWRobinson has helped me to publish my books in a whole different light. From reading a few chapters of this book, I have revamped my own books in a more sellable way. This book is easy to read, and straight to the point.
