After their abrupt departure from Wood Oak, Louisiana, Nell Jefferson and Paul Boudreaux are continuing to encounter roadblocks instigated by friends and family who hatefully oppose their interracial relationship. Will their love survive all of these new challenges? Will they finish high school, get married, and welcome their new baby together? Will their love drastically fumble, leading them back to their segregated communities?
Regina N. Smith is an African American author from Louisiana whose work tackles difficult and often overlooked topics. Her writing explores bullying, interracial relationships, racial discrimination, colorism, child abuse, women’s issues, and complex friendships. She is unafraid to address situations that may be triggering, presenting them within narratives that encourage awareness and moral reflection. Through both virtuous and flawed characters, Regina crafts stories where every figure serves a greater purpose, guiding readers to think critically and engage in deeper dialogue.
Recently, she wrote “I Hope This Letter Finds Its Way to You,” a heartfelt song inspired by her Love Fumbles series, bringing moments from the stories to life through music.
This was a little bit unbelievable when it came to the plot. Although I am happy how everything turned out I don’t think this is as possible as it supposed to seem, especially in their time period, but I also understand that this is fiction.
I am glad that they did go through ups and downs, but I just found the story to be OK and there was fade to Black, which everyone knows that’s not me, but I read it because I was still intrigued.
This was a very uncomfortable journey for me, but I am glad that I did read this and I did find the first book to be more enjoyable than the second so it was an experience.
This picks up just hours after the ending of the first story. Paul, Nell and friend Henry have managed to escape to a small town before they run out of fuel. With no money and no home to go too both Paul and Nell manage to find jobs and somewhere to live but separately. After some time Paul goes into the armed forces and he and Nell don’t see each other for a few years. When they eventually do meet again Paul realises he has a daughter and him and Nell soon marry. But with both of their families estranged and their education disrupted they still have some work to do to rectify that. I really enjoyed reading this and I’m hoping by the way it ending that there is more to follow soon.
