A Month in Tiruvannamalai

Rate this book
A desire to spend time in a spiritual place, away from the noise and hustle of city living, culminated in a month-long trip to Tiruvannamalai in 2018.

This book describes that trip. I’ve written about the homestay where I was put up, my experience visiting Virupaksha cave where Ramana Maharishi stayed for several years, my experience doing a Girivalam around Arunachala Hill (that’s done by tens-of-thousands of people every full-moon), conversations with random strangers, and other experiences in Tiruvannamalai.

It’s a simple book about my spiritual quest and love of spending time in places like Tiruvannamalai.

You will certainly enjoy this short book, if you are of like mind.

I read Parag's travelogue on his trip from Pune to Tiruvannamalai which was very well written and prompted me to next take this up.

This book describes the month he had in Tiruvannamalai in search of the spiritual. It starts with a brief description of Ramana Maharishi, whose method of direct enquiry is one of the most popular mindfulness & meditation techniques today. I have the highest of respect for Ramana Maharishi - his simplicity and teachings. There are descriptions of dialogues with visitors to the town and Ramana Ashram, as well as practices such as Girivalam - circling around the mountain. All of this is an experience I hope to have some day as well.

The book is simple, honest, and very short.

My rating: 4.5 / 5.

*Genre: A personal memoir on spiritual seeking and pursuits
*Target audience: This book is best suited to those who have spiritual aspirations

The author dedicates this book to Ramana Maharishi ,the revered saint who is famous for having popularised and expounded on the practice of ‘self-inquiry ‘.He is said to have had a transformative effect on many of his disciples with them having reported profound shifts in consciousness simply by being in his presence ….He transmitted his lessons largely through the silence & his penetrating gaze was powerful enough to burn up a disciple’s pending karmas on the spot !

The chapters are neatly & well organised in chronological order starting from the author settling down in a homestay to the eventual return to his home city, Pune. The interim chapters in between range from the author’s experiences at his homestay to his daily routine to visiting the Ramana Ashram and finally the Girivalam / circumambulation he underwent.

This book picks up from the previous one,’ Tiruvannamalai Beckons ‘ an outstanding example of fine travel writing. In contrast this book is perhaps not as excellent as the previous one . Don’t get me wrong .It’s still a good book but ….
I think it was a missed opportunity to be even better than what it could have been.It has some excellent moments that work in its favour but also …..those that don’t. Sadly, it’s let down by the first half while the superior second section of the book (although phenomenal) is simply unable to wholly make up for it. I would have loved to have awarded this book 5 stars as I had earlier done so for the previous one. However, in the interests of an authentic review, I would instead award it 3.9 stars.

This was merely a cursory/ ‘micro review ‘ . If you’re interested in a more exhaustive and in-depth review then please take a look below
