Padre Pio of Pietrelcina is known throughout the world as the friar of the stigmata who was able to read consciences and to obtain, in the oscurity of his confessional, countless prodigies of conversion and healing...
The name Padre Pio has been in the background of my faith for decades, yet I knew little about him or his life. As a teenager I remember meeting a man who had met him and the story he told me about the meeting with Fr Pio in the 1960's unnerved me slightly - especially when he recalled meeting him in the Sacristy of his Italian monastery and then experiencing him later that afternoon in a different location.
On Sunday past I had my own experience when travelling to Knock Shrine in Ireland for mass. Unbeknownst to me, there was Padre Pio pilgrimage taking place. Within minutes of arriving I encountered a Capuchin friar who took the opportunity to bless me and my heart with a mitt of Padre Pio's (as I have been undergoing heart-surgery this past year following a major heart attack) - something happened in that moment and the rest of that day became a deeply emotional one.
Long story short - I bought this book to introduce me to the life of Padre Pio. It has left it a deep mark and now I need to find out more about this man.
A very good read - but a little too short as I wanted to find out more.
