Energetic, Frenetic, Action-packed 3rd in Series space adventure
Unlike the first two novels the tale focuses on planet-based adventure with political overtones. The energetic writing is still present. The characters, as ever, superbly rendered, flaws to the fore as always, as chaotic events abound. A central political focus, not to my personal liking, nonetheless resolves itself unexpectedly, the main character shouldering burdens beyond his years. A range of truly unusual characters, some humorously displayed, serve to carry the story forward excellently. Sad to say, as this trilogy seemingly concludes, but maybe not, the Hero, as yet, doesn't seem to fulfil his hopes in relation to his love for another soldier, Tom, stationed elsewhere, as he himself has a new opportunity to explore new Space potentially leaving Tom behind forever. The writing is superb, characters great, action overflowing at times, the loneliness of command soul-destroying. A thoroughly enjoying novel, though political tales underwhelm me!
I liked the characters throughout the series. Each book kept my interest with enough of a cliff hanger that I wanted to read the next book. It was an easy and fun read with a good ending.
