Intense relationships, secrets, and edge of your seat situations make for a great story that hooks you from the first page and doesn't want to let you go. I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book.
A Disturbing thing Happened Today by Conrad Jones. Alan Williams is concerned when one of his detectives is late for work. Kim Davies is never late for anything. When he investigates her whereabouts, what he finds is beyond disturbing and it's about to get much worse... Hooked from page one. What a read. Brilliant. Loved Kim Alan and the team. Ernie I didn't like at all. 5*.
My favorite kind of suspense thriller- to the point, fast, no drag, and so much going on. Kim - obsessively on time, is late to work. Her fellow detectives go to her home. Alan, Kim's long term partner, has a key. He races up the stairs - only to be shot by a trap. They discover the undercover officers and informants have gone missing. Rio, 15, has been pursuing a 13 yo classmate, Helen. Her dad installed spyware in her phone- keeping him informed of their conversation. And flirting. Ernie meets Rio on his path to school. Threatening and assaulting Rio. Both cases escalate- and grip your attention. Great read.
What a blast! Several things going on in this story. Cops and court officials being kidnapped and murdered, a lad viciously assaulted and thrown into a ditch. Set in Ireland and Anglesey.
This is a real page-turner and manages to completely engulf you into its vivid and brutal imagery. It's tense but also flows at a pace where you can just about stop yourself from skimming to see what happens a few pages on.
From the first page this is a fast paced thriller of two different stories, one based around the disappearance of a Policewoman, which links her to a case of suicide in prison, the other, a protective father who believes he can justify the violent action he takes in keeping his three daughters safe. Some scenes are quite graffic, the violence involved is very visual, and very realistic, the plot lines flow quite smoothly alongside each other, all very well written, with believable characters, I just felt the ending was a letdown, sadly, something was missing for me in A Disturbing Thing Happened Today,
I enjoyed this book from start to finish as I did all the others I have read by this author. However in my humble opinion it was not as good as the others that I have read and I found the ending rather rushed hence the 4 and not 5* awarded. Thanks to the author and TBC for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Brilliant as usual. You know when an author has done a good job? It’s when you take a fictional character and you start to develop real feelings about them. You admire them, you despise them, you cheer them on or wish they’d get their just desserts. Ernie was one such character for me. No matter how I tried to empathise with his situation, I just couldn’t! He was despicable. The story itself wasn’t as complex as some of Mr Jones’ other books but the main character had many layers and each one as toxic as the rest. I would recommend this and any other Conrad Jones book. Immerse yourself but be warned their content is not always for the faint-hearted.

A great pacey thriller written in a classic style with intertwined narratives. I really liked the main character and loved to hate the well-crafted baddy, Ernie. This is a gritty story with plenty of action that will hook you in. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Another absolutely cracking read from Conrad Jones ..Starts off at breakneck speed with a major incident involving DI Alan Williams and Kim Davies ..Sergeant's Bob Dewhurst and April Byfelt rush to see a teenage boy who has been assaulted and hospitalised..but is the boy telling them everything...? A damaged mind ...a burning rage ...and a twisted sense of justice ...All the stars ..Brilliant storytelling.
I really liked this book so why four stars? It was to me at least, a bit of a mish-mash with two different stories going on and different characters zooming in and out. It also seemed to end in a whirlwind. I did like both tales and I liked the characters plus I’m hoping there will be more tales and maybe one tale at a time so we can read more about the individual characters. I am not a writer but just a reader. I am always in awe of writers and this is no different. Please try as you will get a different but good experience too.
Fabulous page turner... Settle down, get comfortable and enjoy the rapid ride. This books starts straight away with a sense of urgency and development of characters and stories, so many twists and clearly interwoven elements that you really are kept guessing until the end. Interesting how there are two stories running alongside each other and as a reader you are able to keep urging both on to be solved. Realistic characters and behaviours throughout, also cleverly taken into consideration the covid pandemic and the ways in which it has changed people and relationships. Thoroughly recommend.
I was initially drawn in by the cover, not my usual starting point. It was telling me not to go any further. I did. I couldn’t help myself.
Just brilliant! A superb twist fest of shocks & violence which I could not put down. It’s one of my extremely rare ‘read it in one sitting’ books, well almost, I did remind my family occasionally who I was & I did need to eat etc but WHAT A READ. The blurb is short & sweet, as is this review.
Gritty writing. Gore aplenty. Believable characters. Fabulous. Yes, it is part of a series. It does not matter.
Nothing less than 5 stars for Conrad's latest masterpiece! The tension twists on every page, shocking, violent and utterly gripping. A heartpounding explosion of tension that keeps you riveted until the small hours of the mornin, then leaves you craving more when the last word is sadly read. Honest to God gritty writing, an amazing plot line, characters come to look upon as part of your life, they are so real, so believable. Unputdownable.
I received an E-ARC copy with a request for my honest review.
This book is set in Anglesey and follows the police from Holyhead Police Station.
One morning DCI Alan Williams notices that his colleague DI Kim Davies is late for work. This is unusual for her, so he leads a team to her house to check on her. What they find is a crime scene with no clues on the location of DI Kim Davies.
Meanwhile an ex-army man Ernie Metcalfe takes it upon himself to teach a teenage boy a lesson about contacting his daughter.
With other deaths and assaults popping up all over, the police must work out how to prioritise and still try to find the missing DI.
Are any of the cases linked? Will they find DI Kim Davies dead or alive?
This book takes you on a hell of a journey, there are a number of cases on the go at a time all as brutal as each other. I did find the number of cases and the number of characters, a little hard to follow, but that is just my thoughts.
The description of some of the assaults and murders is graphic, but this just adds to the crimes and builds up the suspense. One chapter especially made me cringe with the details.
I have been looking to read a book by this author for a while, and I am really glad I have and will hopefully read more in the future.
Overall, a brutal and suspense filled thriller with assaults, murders and a missing DI.
Phenomenal. Took me less than 24 hours to read. From the very first chapter it had me enthralled. It went at about 130mph from that first chapter all the way to the last page. I love the Anglesey murders books, living on Anglesey most of my life apart from a brief spell in England and living back there now, I don't know, I feel a connection with them. They remind me of "home". I love a good crime book, the more gory the better :)
What a rollcoatser of a book Police officer and court officials kidnapped and murdered, and a young boy is viciously assaulted and thrown into a ditch are the main storyline of the book.
This creates a page-turner and which draws you into its action. It's tense but also fast past. Try not to skim read to the next page just because you need to know what will happen faster than you can read it.
Absolutely brilliant. Conrad Jones is up there with the likes of Peter James. I love the short chapters. The story line was full of twists and turns. Ernie got his comeuppance I was pleased to see, what a monster of a man and Alan and Kim lived to see another day. Well done
What a fast paced book ! Detectives being kidnapped and tortured ..Judges being murdered as well as barristers in hit and run cases..Add into the mix an overprotective father who will stop at literally nothing to protect his daughters even if that means killing the person or causing them harm ..A good ending too !
Very good storyline. A story of revenge and murder. Some parts of the story where Kim is held captive is so well described you can imagine yourself there watching the events unfold. Revenge can be gruesome but well written. Loved reading this book and look forward to more books 📚 from CJ. I loved all of the Anglesey Murders stories!
This has been an excellent series and I am not sure if this is the last one. If so, I shall be sad. A tale of retributions of all sorts. That Ernie is one evil man and Veronica is just as bad. Kim's escape from harm was a long time coming but what a clever way she did it. A great team effort by all the police forces. Good stuff!!!
Another book you can’t put down, !!! Read in less than 24hrs, so we’ll written, you have to keep turning the pages, hoping there are more in series, !,
No matter how many Conrad Jones books I read, there is never a bad one! Great storylines, never boring. Love that my favourite pub was mentioned, The Black Boy in Caernarfon.
Loved this latest instalment ! A gripping read from start to finish with plenty going on but not so much that you lose track. This author writes pretty fast moving no faff books, his gritty no mess style keeps my attention right to the end. Looking forward to more!
An incredible breath taking read. This book starts with a bang and continues st pace, twisting and turning, ensnaring the reader. Action packed with raw violence and emotion, I was gripped from start to finish.
What a fantastic story. I loved the side plot of Rio and Ernie. It must have taken some serious imagination to come up with some of the things that happened, and the twist at the end I would have never seen coming.
This book was fabulous. Pulled you in from the first page. Couldn’t guess what was going to happen so kept me gripped to the end. Really liked the characters and how the stories intermingled. Would defo recommend
I enjoyed this fast paced, edge on your seat book. I found it was 2 stories into one and both were very gripping. If you like the fast paced books, this is one to read. Many thanks to TBC and Conrad Jones for an amazing read
Really enjoyed this follow up to Unraveling, although feel that the ending was far too rushed and tied up too quickly. Left me feeling he got bored of the story and just ended it.
I kept reading to see if it got any better but it just didn't. Lots of police terminology in there that I'm not sure was needed and I just kept waiting for it all to come together but it just didn't
Conrad Jones has excelled himself with this one. He really plums the depths to which some people can go to. An incredible page turner I found it hard to put down. Practically every Chapter ended in suspense.
