On the Rocks #3

Blame It on the Rum

Rate this book
He’s the worst best thing that’s ever happened to me.

Walking around with Hayes Montrose is like walking around with an angry thundercloud hovering above your head.

He’s too big, too grumpy, and entirely too attractive.

So, what’s he doing with a frumpy wallflower like me?

I have no idea and he won’t tell me.

All I do know is that it started five days ago when I walked into the bar that he works at and he’s been glued to my side ever since.

I should be annoyed by his bossy attitude or sick of him always watching me, but the big guy is growing on me.

Until he tells me what happened the first night that we met.

Now I’m just wondering which of us is crazier.

And why being with him feels so right.

Surprisingly good. This was especially refreshing to read after coming across more than a handful of complete duds this month (and it's still the first week of April!); I was starting to think something was wrong with me. What was also refreshing was having a heroine with parents that are overprotective rather than abusive, neglectful, or just dead. I mean, they're overprotective in a way that's a little stifling to the heroine, but I'll take it over the overabundance of abusive or absent parents.

I was also pleased to find a tiny bit of angst in this; of course I wish it had been drawn out more to get a good grovel in there, but in all, it was serviceable.

Blame it on the Rum - Shaw Hart
Voto: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Betty and Hayes were great together. I loved the connection and chemistry between these two. Hayes knew as soon as he saw Betty that she was meant to be his. This book is short yet sweet and sweet with a little bit of drama and a great HEA. I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it, this series, and Ms. Shaw as a fantastic author.

A super sweet read between this couple and how Hayes will go the extra mile to be near Betty so they can build a relationship. I enjoyed seeing Betty want to be more independent and away from her parents fame. To top it off the ending was a great wrap up. .

It was an okay read I guess but I thought it would be something entirely different.
Kinda forgetful.
But the series seems intriguing so I will read others.

Hayes and Betty's Story . . .

Betty is the daughter of two over-protective famous celebrities. She is ready to get out into the world and live her life on her own. After a night at the local bar, she wakes in a strange bed, where she had been taken for her safety when she had too much to drink. And it is there she meets Hayes Montrose who saw from the start that she is special and was meant to be his.

Since Hayes is a bouncer at On the Rocks, her parents secretly hire him as her bodyguard. He agrees because he wants to stay close to her. But his intention for taking the job could easily be misconstrued. Will Betty find out? Will she assume the worst, that he was being paid to pay attention to her? Or will he convince her of the truth of his feelings?

This story line is sweet with a touch of drama to test the strength of their relationship. Will they stick together?

Barely a storyline

This book is not worth your time. It’s got underdeveloped characters & plot, stiff dialog, predictable scenarios and just not good writing. I finished it to see if it improved. Sadly it did not but at least there was an HEA.

My reviews always contain spoilers, I write them so I can remember the story.

Betty is the daughter of a famous actor and equally famous model, they have a wonderful relationship, but they are very protective of her. When she graduates and moves out her parents promise to ease up on the added security and bodyguards. With less scrutiny in a small town she lets loose one night at On The Rocks bar, Hayes is the bouncer at the bar and feels very protective of her when he sees her. They spend some time talking and he feels a deep connection to her. He’s a scared giant and most people avoid looking at him but Betty not only looked at him but smiled and was so sweet and funny. He takes her home with him but realizes once they get there that she is way more drunk than the thought at the bar. She falls asleep so he puts her in his bed. The next morning he’s so sweet with her he cooks her breakfast and makes sure to give her pain meds for her hangover. She unfortunately doesn’t remember anything of the evening, but she is attracted to Hayes. On the way to her car he asks her for a date and she agrees. While dropping her off at her car her parents show up, she introduces Hayes and realizes this look like a walk of shame scenario. She invites Hayes to join them for lunch and tells them she will see them all at home. Her parents talk to him and find out he’s a bouncer and ask him if he will be her bodyguard. Wanting to spend all the time he can with Betty he reluctantly agrees but worries it will come back to bite him in the butt. There is a break-in in her apartment complex so Hayes moves her in with him. Soon they are enjoying sexy times, dual virgins! Things are going well and Hayes is ready to tell her about her parents offer but Betty overhears him talking to her dad. She’s hurt and wonders if all of his attention was because of her parents and she’s mad at them for going back on their word to give her space. He catches her when she tries to run and professes his love and apologizes. He tells her he didn’t take any money from her parents and he was on the phone resigning. She accepts his apology and confesses her love. Epilogue new year later with them married and five years later with a new baby boy.

All he knows is he needs her in his life, and he can't mess this up.

Blame It on the Rum by Shaw Hart is part of the multi-author On The Rocks series. This series is set around the On The Rocks bar in the small mountain town of Redwood, California. Betty is twenty-one years old and has moved to town recently from Los Angeles. She is the daughter of a very famous Hollywood couple, director Ryan Andrews and model Emma Jones. The three of them are close but Betty bristles at the over protectiveness of her parents, as they insist on her having bodyguards. But now that she is on her own she put her foot down and refused to let her parents hire one to follow her around. Betty got her love of movies from her father and wants to be a screenwriter, which is why she moved to town, to get away from the users and concentrate on her writing. Hayes works as a bouncer at On The Rocks. He is a big man who looks imposing not just because of his size but also because he has a scar on one side of his face. Hayes grew up in Sequoia, in southern California, where his father was a professor at the university and his mother ran the coffee shop on campus. But that all changed when he was twelve and they were hit by a truck that ran a red light. His parents were both killed and Hayes was injured. With no other family to take him in he instead went into care and bounced around different homes until he turned eighteen. Hayes is a talented painter and does not like what he does but he still needs to work so he accepts his life as it is now. But both their lives change when Betty decides to go out for the night and ends up waking up the next morning in a strange bed with a hangover, after having drunk too much the night before. As it turns out Hayes had taken her back to his place and put her to bed, while he slept on the couch. From there things take more than a few interesting and unexpected turns for both of them along the way to their sinfully delectable sexy HEA.

I really enjoyed this story as it surprised me in a couple of ways. It is sweet, naughty, funny, romantic, OTT, quirky and more. I loved both Betty and Hayes as they seem to fumble their way at the start but once things take off watch out as it gets sizzling hot quickly.

I wanted to like this. I'm into size difference (small woman, burly man in this case) and I'm a sucker for smut and/or romance where one of the partners is deeply protective of the other. Unfortunately, I don't care for insta-love to the degree present in this book and I generally want plots to make sense.

Betty, the main female character, is the aspiring screenwriter child of a world-famous actor and his supermodel wife. She's 21, but her parents are still suffocating her by trying to force her to use a bodyguard and sneaking a tracker into her car. Hayes is a bouncer who instantly becomes infatuated with Betty when he lets her into the bar where he works... and the proceeds to seek her out and take her home with him. It sounds creepy, even though he doesn't take advantage of her.

And here's where I feel conflicted on this one. I was willing to overlook the insta-love and Mary Sue character for the appeal of a big, burly protector who's actually quite soft-hearted and not a creep. I was willing to roll with it and see where things went out of curiosity and hope it would end up being a cute romance or steamy erotica (or both).

Then Hayes drove Betty - still so drunk and/or hungover she kept swaying on her feet - to her car. Where her parents were waiting, having stalked her with a tracking chip. And these psychotically overbearing parents... decided to let her drive home. Then they decided that the man they don't know should be hired immediately as her bodyguard, because he seems to like her. They hire him because he's already part of her life now and therefore she won't know they hired a bodyguard without her consent. Immediately, Hayes ponders marrying this woman he just met and taking the secret of this job to his grave.

My brain hurts just trying to explain the dumb plot progression and why I didn't like it. So just suffice to say that the lack of logic in an already flimsy plot was the straw that broke a very exhausted camel's back.

This was such a good book. I couldn’t help but think as I was reading this that this is how short romance is supposed to be done.

Hayes and Betty had such good chemistry. I became so invested in their lives through this. Not to mention they’re both creative types and that wins me over nine times out of ten. Betty a screenwriter, a nice mix of her parents influence and wanting to blaze her own trail, and Hayes a painter, always looking to spot out the beauty in life.

Hayes is a fantastic mix of that possessiveness the genre seemingly demands while also respecting that what Betty wants more than anything is to be free, not under the scrutiny and protection she always had while growing up.

Their chemistry is apparent without screaming that there’s attraction. They both provide each other with what they need. Betty wants to feel safe, in life but also to feel safe to be her own person. Hayes wants a family, and to spend more time with the firecracker who caught his eye after 10+ years of loneliness.

The biggest problem I had with thighs book was that it wasn’t longer. I could really settle down and read about their journey for a while. But at the same time, this is the first time that I’ve felt a short story really utilised the time it had and I still felt like the characters love grew organically within the time frame.

Major kudos to Shaw Hart! I will absolutely be reading more.

This book is a part of the On the Rocks series and focuses on Hayes and Betty. Betty is the daughter of 2 famous parents who are set on having a bodyguard for her now that she is living on her own and away from them. Betty doesn’t want that at all. She wants to be able to spread her wings and live independently without people watching her every move. Hayes is a bouncer at On the Rocks and when he meets Betty at the bar he immediately knows there is something special about her and that she was meant to be his. When Betty’s parents meet Hayes, they hire him to be her bodyguard without Betty knowing. Hayes agrees just so he can be close to Betty but he is conflicted about the position right away. I absolutely loved Hayes and Betty together and am so glad that they were able to finally find the person that made them feel like they were complete in life. This was such a great story and a great addition to the series.

Betty has been under the thumb of her overprotective parents for years, now with some breathing room, she is enjoying her night, but in the morning, she wakes up not sure what happen.

Hayes heart is in painting, but being a bouncer at the bar is what pays the bill. When Betty walked in, he could not keep his eyes off her. When they met, they hit it off, but he did not realize she had so much to drink, until she fell asleep in his car.

Blame It On The Rum is a perfect story to spend a lazy day getting lost in the pages. Hayes is already protective of her, so when her dad ask him to be her bodyguard, it was the perfect way to be around her. The longer Betty is around Hayes, the more she does not want to leave, that is until she hears Hayes and her dad.

This is a great addition to the series and an amazing story, Hayes and Betty's connection is hot and intense that will cause you kindle to melt. .

*spoilers* Betty wakes up drunk at Hayes cabin. She can not remember the last night, having too much to drink. Betty has famous parents who are overprotective. Hayes has lost his parents when he was 12 and is often judged by his appearance (tall, big muscles and a scar in his face), Betty sees him for who he is and he immediately loves her. Betty's parents offer him the job as her bodyguard without her knowing. He agrees. They get really close. Can Betty forgive him when she finds out?
I adore the writing style of Shaw Hart- Hayes is so sure of his love for Betty. And the message to always see behing who somebody appears to be and not judge is so important. The secret of the first night which Betty could not remember brought tears to my eyes.. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Betty, the female lead, has spent her life sheltered and guarded by her celebrity parents. Now out in the world, she plans to live her own life in a small town away from the city. Hayes, the male lead, is big, tough, and scarred but Betty isn’t intimidated and he enjoys her company. Her parents want her protected, he wants an excuse to be around her, but her reaction to him being her bodyguard isn’t going to be pretty…

This short story is dual POV, well written, and cute and steamy. Both lead characters are virgins but they’re both hot for each other and have the same life goals. They just need to get past their concerns. I enjoyed the relationship development though I wasn’t happy with how long it took Hayes to tell Betty what was going on with her parents.

Shaw Hart joins the awesome multi-author On the Rocks series with Blame it on the Rum. Swoon-worthy Hayes is a bouncer at the On the Rocks bar, and from the moment twenty-one year old screenwriter Betty walks in for a night of flexing her independence, he not only feels protective of her but wants her to be his. When she wakes up in his bed the next morning - with no memory of the night before - despite his size and growly attitude, Betty instantly knows he would never hurt her. However, will a secret between them threaten to end things before they even really begin?

A fast-paced, entertaining, steamy, super sweet instalove romance, Blame it on the Rum is a must-read addition to this fabulously cool series!

Oh, swoon....
Get me a sweet, bear of a man that is so incredibly soft spoken, loving, caring. I want to hug him and take away that fear of rejection he carried most of his life, because of his 6'7ft height and scar on the left eye. Hayes is a sweet gentle giant cinnamon roll and I wish that this novella were longer so we can more of him and Betty.
Betty, is a sweet girl that made me smile every time she beamed up at Hayes with her smile. This is exactly the story I needed, sweet, with a little sprinkle of drama that is over in a few seconds.
Our H and h are both virgins, and each others first, last and only. No cheating, no OM, no OW (there is a waitress that checked Hayes out, but he didn't pay any attention to her or any other OW). It is safety gang approved, and I will for sure be revisiting this lovely couple and their love story many times!

What is one possibility when you’ve had too much rum? You may actually end up meeting the love of your life. That’s what happens with Betty and Hayes. He’s a bouncer at the bar where she went to unwind. He becomes completely enamored by her and wants to keep her safe. When he finds out that her parents are famous and need a bodyguard for her, he says yes, but what will Betty think if she finds out?

I liked Betty and Hayes together. Hayes is shy, quiet, and physically scarred from a childhood trauma. When he sees Betty there is an instant connection. Betty sees who he really is, the sweet and protective man who cares for her. I really enjoyed reading their story, they drama, their love, their steam, and their beautiful ending.

Betty is ready to live life away from her over protective parents and ends up at a bar where she meets Hayes. After a few too many drinks she wakes up to find herself in Hayes’s bed but nothing happened. Hayes fell for her instantly and wanted nothing better than to protect her and make her fall in love with him. Her parents meet him and offer him a job as her bodyguard which he accepts only to be close to her but knows he should not have accepted. As they start to get close he knows he has to quit as her bodyguard to not upset her. What will happen when Betty finds out the truth? Will they still have their chance at happiness?.

First things first; I like the cover of this book!
Blame it on the rum is a novella in the ‘’on the rocks’’ collection.
This story is short, fast paced and an enjoyable read. I read this book in one sitting and was satisfied throughout. I found the writing style easy to follow, the characters likeable and the storyline enjoyable. Betty is the overprotected daughter of famous parents. When she moves to a new town will she find love? Hayes wants Betty as soon as he meets her but will he get a chance?
The chemistry between Hayes and Betty is clear to see and I loved them together. I thought they were perfect for one another.
I liked the ending and the epilogue for this story.
The storyline for this book is easy to follow and it is an enjoyable read.

TWO VIRGIN STEAMY INSTANT LOVE!

Betty with the red hair and sparkling green eyes caught the attention of Hays a sweet artistic soul the night she drank too much rum at the On The Rocks Bar in Redwood , California where he worked as a bouncer as art supplies are expensive.

She wakes up the next morning in a strangers bed still fully clothed when the bouncer enters the room…..

This is where they get to know each other and fall in love but there is a secret Hays is keeping…..

What will Betty do when she finds out?

A sweet quick read that is sure to bring a smile to your dial!.

I really liked this story. It was sweet, entertaining, and enjoyable. The characters were interesting and likable. Ryan and Emma were caring (but super overprotective) parents to Betty. Their protectiveness led to Hayes making a decision that was a risk. Betty was determined to be independent and do her own thing which led her to meet Hayes. Hayes was wonderful and he could totally be my new book boyfriend. There was a tiny bit of drama/angst but it resolved well. I loved their happily ever after. I recommend reading this book.
