I happened across this crime noir published in 1959 and thought it sounded intriguing. Joel Brogan is a WWII vet who has returned to his native city in Oklahoma. A degreed minister, he has lost his first two churches. He stays in a rented room above uncle's bar on skid row and hatches a new plan. There is plenty of grit, religion, and smoking. Joel has his share of warts but is a likable protagonist who refuses to back down from pursuing his dream of a better future. While perhaps not a forgotten gem, I found Sin Street well-written, diverting, and entertaining. I liked it.
