Eve Lansbury, a widow with a young son, has learned to distrust men after her marriage. She runs The Grange, which will eventually be her son's inheritance.
Maxim Randall, the Earl of Levisham, returns from the military to take his deceased brother's place. Once there, he meets his neighbor, the widow Eve Lansbury and is taken with her.
Besides the romance, there is some intrigue in this story, as there are attempts on Maxim's life and the mystery of what really happened to cause his brother's death.
While one could certainly understand Eve's fear of men having control over her life, I felt that her negative reactions to Maxim's help were a bit over the top. Still, this was a very good story and I am glad I read it.
