Fun and silly story featuring Oliver and Elliott visiting their grandma and grandpa and their grandparent's mischievous dog, Boo. Children will love the funny story and beautiful illustrations.
Everytime Oliver and Elliott want to do something the dog would want to take part in the event, but not in the way you would expect a dog to. Whether it was hopping on the computer, reading a book, watching a movie or simply trying to go to bed for the night, Boo would always make himself known by hopping on someone's head. This is a cute and quick read so if you have a child that loves dogs but doesn't sit still very long then this is the book for you to start with. The pictures are simple for the child to grasp and pull in their attention. Mix that with some funny voices and your all set.

Imelda Yunita Maharani Chotimah is the absolute star of ‘I can’t sleep with a dog on my head’, written by Cathy Lynn Brooks. Chomitah’s illustrations are as charming as they are colourful, as didactic as they are endearing. Yet the purpose of Brooks’s story is vague: grandson commences an activity (using a laptop, reading, watching TV, watching movies, sleeping) and the adorable dog, Boo, is there, sat on their heads and getting in the way. What do Oliver and Elliott do? They scream for one or other of their grandparents, who chastise the poor puppy. Disappointingly, none of the activities the two boys undertake are outside, and they mostly involve staring at a screen. Brooks has done well collaborating with the Indonesian illustrator, but the underlying message is weak.
Will your pre-school kids love it? Undoubtably. They will giggle with joy at each swipe of the page: the laptop, a shocked grandma, and then the poor boy fending of the over-enthusiastic canine (these illustrations are gorgeous). ‘I can’t sleep with a dog on my head’ would benefit from a print edition, especially as the Kindle typesetting is poor. Brooks’s choice of all capitals for the text is unfortunate, especially as children start to associate letters with the sounds they represent. Overall, it’s a nice book to read to your kids, and if you do it right, they will be excited to see how Boo mischievously interrupts Oliver and Elliott’s time with their grandparents.
Short, cute, and to the point; fun illustrations to boot
I thought I Can’t Sleep With a Dog on My Head! would be a cute book for little kids upon looking at the cover, which shows a dog lying sideways across the heads of youngsters Oliver and Elliott in their bed. As the book’s title proclaims, Ollie and Ellie likely ain’t snoozing in this scenario.
Cathy Lynn Brooks has written a lyrical book for children with scenes gone bad by Boo, the space-challenged dog of Oliver and Elliott’s grandparents. An example:
“Elliott likes to read books. (Illustration of an opened book showing a pretty rainbow and tree.) Grandpa! (Illustration of green-shirted grandpa looking pained by his dog’s shenanigans.) I can’t read with a dog on my head! (Illustration with a dog on the child’s head as Oliver looks on in perplexion.) Boo!” (Illustration of a remarkably young looking but angry grandpa holding his shamed Boo.)
And on the story goes, quickly.
Really, what makes Brooks’ book cook is the colorful, curvy illustrations by Imelda Yunita Maharani Chotimah. I looked forward to seeing the images more than the words as I scrolled on my Kindle, probably because they were less predictable.
I could envision the paperback version of I Can’t Sleep being a rousing success with kids as parents flip through the pages. It’s one of those reads that doesn’t get old for children of a certain age. Well done and fun!
I Can't Sleep With a Dog on my Head is a cute story for young children. The tale is straightforward with few words and nicely enhanced with lots of lovely illustrations.
I read the book aloud with my son, 12, and it made him laugh aloud. We agreed that it is most definitely not a story for kids his age, but still, he thought it was cute, funny, and entertaining. His opinion—and mine—is that young children will enjoy this book. We read together every night—usually books for his age level, but we occasionally read what he calls a "baby book."
The book introduces children to reading. The story is about two little boys who enjoy visiting with their grandparents and their dog, Boo. But for some reason, Boo likes sitting on their heads. LOL Words such as grandma, grandpa, and boo are repeated several times throughout the story. Often, they are the only word on a page. The story is very simplistic and allows children and join in the fun of reading. It is just the type of book I liked reading to my children when they were young. Enjoy!
“I Can’t Sleep With a Dog on my Head” is a super cute and quick bedtime story by author Cathy Lynn Brooks. In it, a little boy and girl named Ollie and Ellie are visiting their grandma and grandpa. Much to all of their dismay, the grandparents feisty little pup named Boo seems to have the habit of jumping up and snuggling up just a little too close for comfort for Ollie and Ellie.
They find themselves in a variety of situations with Boo making himself comfortable on the heads of Ollie and Ellie. Each time they shout out to Grandma and Grandpa for help and the dog is scolded with an assertive “BOO!”
I love checking out children’s books to share with my nephew’s son Behr and I look forward to doing so this weekend. The illustrations are simple yet colorful and tells the story with very few words needed. In fact, my review probably has more words than the book itself so it will be a good choice when a child pleads for…. “Just one more” story before bed.
I'm always in search of new children's books for our home library. I love to read and it's my hope that my two girls will also (the 3yo already does). It's important to me to have a variety of books to choose from to include fun books and books with a meaningful message. This book is pure whimsy.
In this story, two brothers (Oliver and Elliott) are spending the day at their grandparents' house who have a small dog. Truthfully, my first impression was confusion. It was cute, but I wondered where the story was going. That is until the last page. That's when I smiled and understood. Of course, the confusion is now gone and reading this book with my girls is fun - I love saying "Boo!" with my daughter. Too cute.
With simple vocabulary it makes for easy reading for a first or second grader. The book is short, so as to keep attention span of the little ones. The illustrations are simple, but well done. Sure to keep small kids engaged.
I absolutely adored this picture book, which I grabbed out of a feeling of nostalgia for when my kiddo was little. I miss reading him books. (He's 16 now and would hate me remind anyone he was once tiny, lol).
The story is about two children who go visit grandma and grandpa. The grandparents have a dog, Boo, and Boo manages to get in the way of everything. Everybody is getting after him! But in the end, Boo has a place just as he is with Grandma and Grandpa. The message to children is great, that while it can sometimes seem that you don't fit anyone, there's someone out there that loves you just as you are!
The illustrations are loving done and everyone looks unique. Boo is adorable and is hands-down my favorite design in the book. The setting is shown with enough detail for the reader to know what's going on and the colors are bold without being obnoxious.
All in all, this is a lovingly crafted children's book that parents, kids, and wayward dogs will all enjoy immensely!
I bought I Can’t Sleep With a Dog on My Head, by author Cathy Lynn Brooks to read to my grandchildren who are 2 and three years old. The best way for me to review a children’s book is to gauge their response before I provide mine. Gina and Ray found the book to be fun because we made it silly as we laughed at the dog who is on the heads of different family members. We even acted it out with a stuffed dog they have. The reason why they liked it so much is because it's simple and silly and kids enjoy things that they can be silly with. Author Cathy Lynn Brooks also used family members as the main characters and kids could relate to that. For me, the characters were well-drawn and brightly colored. Since the kids loved the book, so did I. We read it three times in a row. Five stars!!!
Cathy Lynn Brooks’ “I Can’t Sleep with a Dog on My Head” stands out as a great children’s book. She credits her grandchildren in the dedication, and it’s clear that she used her own knowledge to tailor her work to the age group and audience. The story is simple, but it uses repetition and humor effectively. I used to have to read to my younger brothers to help them go to sleep. This is perfect before-bed reading for children or grandchildren because it is funny enough to be engaging while maintaining a soothing tone and clear vocabulary. Chotimah’s illustrations are crisp, visually pleasing, and a perfect companion to the story. Hopefully Brooks will write the next installment of the Oliver and Elliott series and bring even more joy to young readers and their parents and grandparents.

We just got a puppy so I got this book for my kiddos to read to give them an idea of some of the things that a spunky little puppy might do. My kids loved it and really enjoyed Boo, even all his silly habits. I would definitely recommend this for those with little ones, especially if you are thinking of bringing a puppy into your family.
I Can’t Sleep With A Dog On My Head by Cathy Lynn Brooks Review This was a short read that toddlers are sure to enjoy, but I Can’t Sleep With A Dog On My Head is not without its issues. Thankfully, none of the issues that littered this children’s book were big, but they were noticeable. There were several formatting issues where the text wasn’t the right size or it was misplaced on the page. I also found the severity of the anger on the parents' faces as they scolded the playful dog disheartening and threw off the light, playful tone the book tried to achieve. All in all Cathy Lynn Brooks wrote a pleasant and thoughtful story that most kids will be glad to read.
Perfectly sums up a little child’s sense of humour
This book perfectly sums up a child’s sense of humour. I should know as I was reading it to my 6 year old son and he was in hysterics. The illustrations are great as well.

I Can't Sleep With a Dog on my Head is a picture book with very few words on each page, so it is oriented towards very young kids. Some pages have just one word, while the page with the most words has thirteen words. So whether it is read by an adult to a child or read by a child, it is a very quick read! The illustrations are colorful, bright, and engaging, just as you would want in a picture book. The story features two brothers, Oliver and Elliott, who visit their grandma and grandpa. Their grandparents have a dog, named Boo. Unlike some other picture books I have purchased, this one opened in my Kindle Paperwhite. However, the pictures when seen there are black & white, so I do not imagine that is the way most people would want to view the book. Children will undoubtably prefer to see the illustrations in color. On my laptop, using the Kindle app, the illustrations are in color, but the text in two pages had spacing issues, so that "read with" appeared as "readwith" and "see with" appeared as "seewith." As I progressed, it happened again with "movieswith" and "sleepwith" Since this is a book for little children learning to read, it's an unfortunate problem. Other than that, children should find the story pleasing. Grandparents and dogs are fun and relatable, and there is a repetitive pattern followed here that is a common element to children's books. I Can't Sleep With a Dog on my Head is listed as "Oliver and Elliott Series Book 1." So, although this is the only book available at this time, one assumes other books featuring the two siblings will be published in the future; good news for anyone with children who read and enjoyed this book and cannot get enough of it.
