Cornish Romance #5

From the Fields of Porthlenn

Rate this book
A Regency Romance—Cornwall, 1818

Poppy Honeysett wants to be seen as the woman she is—not as the naive young lady she was. She will no longer race across beaches or collect seashells like a child. And she will not, under any circumstances, pine after the lieutenant who broke his promise—and her heart—two years before. But such things are easier said than done, especially when that very lieutenant returns to St. Just with all his charismatic charm in tow.

When an old injury begins to act up, Lieutenant Edmund Harris is placed on reserve from the navy. Instead of returning home to the troubles that await him there, he travels to St. Just to visit with old acquaintances and, of course, to see his darling Poppy. Two years have passed since he saw her last, but Edmund is determined to pick up things where they left off. However, when Poppy seems interested in every man but him, he can’t make sense of it.

Desperate to recreate the past and bring back Poppy’s playful nature, Edmund determines to start their relationship anew, but Poppy resists, refusing to make the same mistakes again. When tragedy strikes, however, and the two of them must come together for the good of St. Just, Poppy must choose to trust again or lose the only man she ever truly loved.

This is the fifth and final book in the clean Regency Cornish Romance series by Deborah M. Hathaway. Although this romance is a stand-alone novel, the books are best enjoyed when read in order.

Deborah M. Hathaway graduated from Utah State University with a degree in English and Creative Writing. As a young girl, she devoured Jane Austen's novels while watching and re-watching every adaptation of Pride & Prejudice she could, entirely captured by all things Regency and romance.

Throughout her life, she wrote many short stories, poems, and essays, but it was not until after her marriage that she was finally able to complete her first romance novel, attributing the completion to her courtship with, and love of, her charming, English husband.

Deborah finds her inspiration for her novels in her everyday experiences with her husband and children and during her travels to the United Kingdom, where she draws on the beauty of the country in such places as Ireland, Yorkshire, and her beloved Cornwall.

From the Fields of Porthlenn is a second chance sweet historical romance set on the rocky shores of Cornwall. Deborah excels at historical scene setting and characterization. I felt like this could be made into a BBC movie that I would rewatch over and over.

3 years of separation...three years of misunderstandings and longing and palpable heartache. The reconnection is authentic and not easy...but its also really sweet and full of emotional depth.

The romance is one that will steal your heart. It is a dual perspective plot so you can see how hard it is for both Poppy and Edmund and how they feel pulled in different directions but also have this internal compass pointing towards each other.

I felt a part of this hamlet. All of these characters come alive on the pages...they are so full of warmth and belonging and I loved seeing characters from the previous book. Their struggles are real and their heartaches are realistic. The ending was beautifully done and was the cherry on top. I still have a few books in this series I haven't read so I don't have to say goodbye quite yet.

I have no notes. Beautifully done. I will always read whatever Deborah writes next. Hopefully this isn't the last we have seen of Cornwall.

I’ve long been anticipating Poppy’s & Edmund’s story! Deborah M. Hathaway delivers a powerful second chance love story with so much emotion, depth, and well written longing. It’s one of those stories that will stay with you long after finishing. There’s some weighty subject matter in this story which the author presents in a thoughtful, insightful way. There’s also a dash of humor and lightness sprinkled throughout that balances everything beautifully. If you haven’t read one of her Cornish Regency romances, grab this one, then go back and read the others.

When Poppy was 16 years old, she fell in love with Lt. Edmund Harris. Several years later, she was old enough for Edmund to ask her to marry him, but leaving her beloved Cornwall where her family is and her dear father is buried was too much. She was hoping Edmund would come back, but year after year goes by with no sign of him. Then suddenly he’s back in Cornwall recuperating from an old injury.

Instead of the welcoming embrace she imagined, she’s met with cool formality. Poppy’s changed as well though and isn’t the carefree girl she once was. Edmund broke her heart, plunging her into a dark place she’s not wanting to revisit. But as they’re forced into each other’s presence, the familiar teasing and feelings return. What happens though when he leaves for the sea? Will he break her heart again?

Edmund’s heart was torn to pieces when Poppy chose Cornwall over him. He’s not wiling to risk his heart again. Since he was a little boy, his trust has been broken especially by his mother. Her abusive treatment of him deeply scarred him. Will he have the courage to heal from the past and make a future with Poppy, or will he return to the only safe place he’s known, the sea?

I loved Poppy & Edmund. There was so much depth and growth in their relationship. It was hard to see them so at odds at first. Both are hurting and can’t seem to let down their guard. Their relationship grows very organically with two steps forward and one step back. When they finally share their feelings, it’s powerful. The slow build up to their first kiss is well worth the wait.

Edmund’s past was absolutely tragic. His mother is awful and I felt so sorry for him and the pain he carries. Poppy’s such a sunny personality, yet her believable experience with depression reveals the depth of her character. Her fear of returning to that painful bleakness strikes a familiar chord with anyone who has experienced depression or has a loved one who’s experienced it.

The historical detail, vivid descriptions of Cornwall, heartfelt romance, the angst, longing, and endearing characters make this a must read! It can be read as a standalone, but those familiar with the series will welcome seeing familiar characters again. Poldark fans will love this! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

Oh, my heart. I am not sure I have the words to express how much I adore this book.

This fifth and final book in the Cornish romance series takes us back to the tiny hamlet of Tristwick on the shores of Cornwall. We have had small glimpses of Edmund and Poppy during other books in the series and finally, finally, we get to read their love story.

Three years have passed since Edmund left on his latest assignment for the Navy.

Three years of Poppy watching, waiting for him to return.

Three years since they both had their hearts broken.

And now Edmund is back.

Oh, my friends, this second chance romance is full of so much emotion - heartache, angst, longing, regret, hope, love - it truly gave me all the feels! This is an emotional roller coaster of the best kind.

This is a story about second chances,
knowing when to let go and when to hold on.
It is about home and family and forgiveness and soulmates.
It is about holding onto the light, even - and especially - when things seem dark.

I am a longtime fan of this author and have enjoyed everything that she writes, but I feel like this book is at a whole new level.

The poetic prose, the vivid details, the tender love story. It was all so achingly beautiful that I was left in tears when I turned the last page.

Fans of the series will love seeing cameos of all the main characters from the other books but this can be read as a standalone.

But whether you are a fan or this would be your first Deborah Hathaway book, you need to pick it up and let yourself be carried away by this captivating story. This is one of my favorite reads this year and I cannot recommend it enough!

I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.

While half of me is so happy Deborah added this book to her completed Cornwall series, the other half strongly feels like she could squeeze another six books into this beautiful landscape and world she has built. The setting and small seaside town is beautifully done.
Poppy's great love of her family and their fishing Hamlet knows no bounds. She turned down a marriage proposal that would take her away from it all. Several years later, she's hardened her heart against the only man who has tempted her to leave Tristwick. When Edmund Harris returns for a brief visit to his former captain, he attempts to avoid Poppy altogether, but she just keeps popping up.
This is a sloooooow burn romance. The build up is angsty and by the time Poppy and Edmund get to some happiness and closure, I needed something pretty epic to salvage my just-kiss-already feelings. Deborah did not disappoint.
I adore Deborah's love for Cornwall - and Poldark - that shines through in this series. Her passion for the location is something special. I'm eager to see what she creates next.
Thank you to the author for the gifted copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

There's something about a second chance romance that is so satisfying. Edmund and Poppy had a young love that neither really seemed ready for at the time, yet when he shows up to heal from a Naval injury once again, the tides just might turn in their favor.

This entire cast of beloved characters really set the scene and allowed for a charming friendship to blossom once again. Hathway does a fantastic job of bringing these people to life--especially Edmund and Poppy. They had to deal with some hard things, so this book isn't all light and fluffy, but it's real, raw, and very readable. I loved them so much and admired the way they faced their challenges and this is exactly the story I was hoping for.

I could visualize the setting and imagine myself as a fly on the wall in the various situations. I immensely enjoyed watching the growth and I desperately wanted to see someone fall off one of those dangerous, slippery cliffs, but I guess that wouldn't be very nice of me to wish.

This is one book that settles nicely into its place in a beautiful and rich series. And I just want to thank the author for the magical storytelling, including a pronunciation guide, and attaching a detailed set of Author's Notes that added so much to my reading experience.

Content: mild moments/mentions of past danger/peril; mild romance

I love the way Hathaway crafts romance books. They feel so romantic and the setting is always perfect and I love being whisked away to the shores of Cornwall.

This second chance romance was incredibly tender. I loved watching Edmund and Poppy reconnect and explore what happened in the past and how they could make progress for the future they both sought. There’s a whole spectrum of emotions that I felt wanting these two to kiss and make-up already (and don’t worry, that kiss scene is fire).

I adored all of the surrounding cast (well, most of them, IYKYK) and appreciate that everyone plays apart in the story. It’s a slow build plot that is enchanting and moving. I love that Edmund and Poppy found a way to be together. To communicate and love each other with everything they had.

I can’t wait to read more of Hathaway’s books. She’s one of my top go-to’s for historical romances.

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: physical and emotional child abuse (recounted), loss of a loved one, childbirth, mentions of depression, depictions of grief

I loved this fifth book in A Cornish Romance Book series. Poppy was such a loving, positive young lady whose heart had been broken by Lieutenant Edmund Harris. While she tried to move on with her life by pouring herself into her family and friends, the pain never really went away. She had waited in hopes for Edmund to return and I was so happy when he did. Poppy and Edmund had much hurt to let go of in order to heal and forgive, but I am glad they were able to have their HEA.

Miss Hathaway portrayed the Cornish village with such vivid detail that I felt that I was there with the villagers. I was rooting for them to find a way to keep the village growing and thriving. Edmund’s idea was genius and a fabulous way to conclude the story.

I highly recommend reading all of the books in the series. Although, you can read this as a stand alone.

Absolutely beautiful! Deborah M. Hathaway comes right out of the gate swinging with lots of emotion, pining, and angst and then it does not stop! In this second chance romance, Poppy Honeysett is all grown up and grasping firmly to the life she knows when Lieutenant Edmund Harris returns to Cornwall, nursing an old injury and hoping to avoid any painful meetings with the girl who broke his heart.

This story is full of old hurts, hard conversations, shared feelings, almost kisses, and gorgeous scenery. I could actually see this book play out in my mind and my heart ached for these characters and their tender feelings as they each tried to heal.

This is the 5th and final book in a series but can be read as a stand-alone (but I would recommend reading them all; especially book 4!)

Thank you to the author for my e-arc of this book. All opinions here are my own.

This is book 5 in the Cornish Romance series by @authordeborahmhathaway and a 5 out of 5 star book for me! It’s the perfect ending to this series.

While this can be read as a stand alone, I recommend reading all of them. We’ve met, or seen glimpses, of Poppy and Edmund several times in previous books and for this one the story is so much fuller and richer if you read them all!

Poppy has the perfect amount of spice with her love-able personality. She’s the country darling. We see another side of Poppy that makes your heart go out to her. The heartbreak from the first time Poppy and Edmund say goodbye is real and raw, setting up for an amazing second chance romance that will make your heart melt!

Edmund is the perfect tease. I loved seeing a deeper side from Edmund in this one and realizing there is more than meets the eye. He has to overcome past hurts and insecurities and it felt so real. His character arc was perfectly balanced within this book.

Edmund and Poppy are meant to be and I’m so glad @authordeborahmhathaway wrote their story!

From the Fields of Porthlenn is available NOW and ready for you to read! Trust me, you’re going to want this one❤️

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Content: small mentions of depression and child abuse.

Beautiful Second Chance Romance!

I couldn’t wait to read the fifth and final book in Deborah Hathaway’s Cornish romance series which focused on Poppy Honeysett and Edmund Harris, both of whom were introduced earlier in the series. This story was so emotionally gripping and poignant as the main characters came to terms with some heavy issues that had affected them individually and were influencing their behavior toward each other. How they worked through their personal darkness and into the light of hope made for a stirring and uplifting read. It was also great to reconnect with other characters in the series. This book could be read as a standalone, as enough background information is given, but I would highly recommend reading the rest of the series first, as this one offers a wonderful conclusion. Do not miss this book and the beautiful healing journeys Poppy and Edmund must take to get to their happily-ever-after!

I received an advanced reader copy from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions expressed here are completely my own.

I’m hoping I can adequately express my love for this book, and the bittersweet knowledge that a favorite series has come to an end. I soaked up every minute of it & just like always was transported back to my favorite place in this world….

“You truly have not experienced a community—have not witnessed true beauty—until you’ve stepped foot in Tristwick with its hidden houses and breathtaking views.”

I want to move to this tiny fishing hamlet, and spend the rest of my days here. I’m in love, with the characters, the jutting cliffs, the sea pinks, the stormy ocean, all of it.

Oh Poppy & Edmond, how I have anticipated your story. We meet them in book 1. Poppy at the young age of 16 falls in love with the lieutenant, who is convalescing at Golowduyn after a shipwreck.

We see them again in book 4, ending on a promise that he will return for her.

Now, in book 5, it skips ahead a few years, and things have fallen apart between them.

The story that ensues is full of so much emotion and pulling, heartbreak and forgiveness. We learn that they both are harboring darkness from their past that they have to come to terms with in order to move forward.

My heart broke for them, I cheered for them. I wept with these characters, and the struggles and challenges they faced, yet never gave up. At the heart of it, Poppy and Edmond have an irreplaceable deep friendship and connection.

From the fields of porthlynn was such a beautiful second chance romance book. The book felt like a wrestle of individual growth and growth as a couple. This wrestle brought them closer to giving each other a second chance.

I love that this book delved into their deep hurt. I love that it was mingled with humor (the pie!). I love the ties of strong family and friends in this little village. I loved hearing Edmund describe the town. I loved the support Poppy and Edmund gave each other when they explained their most vulnerable struggles. The empathy. Their willingness to listen and comfort.

Such a beautiful book. Full of ups, downs, discovery, and growth. Loved it!

Oh my heart!!! I've been anxiously awaiting Poppy's story. From the moment she and Edmund first met and all the little scenes we saw them in, in the previous book, I couldn't help but cheer for them and wish they'd get their own story. And yay they did!!!!

This book picks up several years after the previous book ends. And we learn that Poppy and Edmund had a bit of a courtship and a bit of an understanding. And then we don't know what happened except that they haven't seen or heard from each other in several years. Until Edmund shows up again for leave and chooses to help out at the lighthouse.

So many emotions and unsurety in their initial meetings after so much time apart. Some left my heart aching for them. And others had me giggling and saying "you go girl!" to Poppy. She's picked up a backbone and is not the puppy eyed little girl she once was in regards to Edmund. Though they both still feel that pull they have always felt, they are different and older and have different demands on them now.

There were some moments I wasn't sure if it was going to work between them. But I kept hoping and reading on to discover more. And I loved how we were able to see more of Edmund's past (even though it was very sad) and we were able to see what happened between these two slowly throughout the story.

The vivid imagery of the story kept me captivated as well as the sweet friendship and love story between Poppy and Edmund. There were ups and downs and scares and concerns and struggles and joyful moments. I loved it all! The town is also trying to survive after several struggles over the years. I loved the sense of family the author created between those living in this town. They truly care for each other and it was so refreshing to see that.

I smiled and laughed many times throughout this book. Poppy is such a delight! And I'll tell you that I probably sighed a few times as well as I read those tender and sweet moments between Edmund and Poppy. You're going to love it!!! Thank you to author Deborah Hathaway for this wonderful Cornish Romance series!!! I'll miss having more characters to enjoy in this series but so glad I can go back and enjoy it all over again and again and again!!!

Content: Clean. Some mild moments of peril. Some talk of childhood trauma and neglect. The romance is clean with only some sweet kisses and nothing further.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Story Notes

This final return to Tristwick and the Cornwall area to at last hear Poppy’s story was just lovely. I loved the second chance romance and how that came about for Edmund and Poppy. And while I was sad they had to go through so much hurt to get here, I really think it turned out for the best for them. They were more mature and seemed much more able to have real conversations and truly know what they wanted. And, their first kiss was better that it might have been before 😍 This world that Deborah has created has grown and developed so well throughout the series and I’m a bit sad for it to be finished. I loved getting to know each couple and Cornwall with each successive story. Each was unique but also well tied to the others to give a good continuity that I appreciated. Definitely add this book and series to your TBR…they are definitely worth the read.

What a book, y'all.

I just finished From the Fields of Porthlenn last night and holy smokes. It's a good one.

I have loved Poppy in all the other books in this series that I've read so far and I was so excited to see that she and Edmund were getting their own story. It was such a fun second chance romance. I loved watching Poppy and Edmund overcome all their previous heartbreak and deal with their individual pasts to finally get the chance at love that they deserved.

Also. Can I just say that I'm definitely on Edmund's side when it comes to stargazy pie? That just sounds disgusting. Lemon curd shortbread, on the other hand? That I could totally do.

Moral of the story here, friends, is that you should definitely add this book to your TBR list and read it if you haven't already. #thisistheway

Many thanks to Deborah for the ARC; all thoughts are my own :)

Poppy and Edmund’s long awaited story! It’s always sad to see a fabulous series end, but sadly
all good things must come to an end. The experience is made easier though when the last book
in the series is just so dreamy. And man oh man, From the Fields of Porthlenn did NOT disappoint. There's the angst of lost love and overcoming heartbreaks of the past, both romantically and not. Edmund and Poppy try oh so hard to ignore the feelings that can be felt leaping from the pages of this story. You find yourself shouting, just be together!

You can read this story as a standalone novel and enjoy it perfectly. However, if you do start
from the very beginning of the Cornish Romance series, you get a lot more backstory of Edmund and Poppy, as
well as get to meet a lot of the other characters and locations mentioned in this story.
Considering I was hooked from book 1, I highly recommend you read the whole series! Having seen the beginnings of this relationship in other books that you receive hints of in this book, it felt like an even more satisfying ending!

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.

Cornwall's coast – I swoon! Hathaway knows how to bring a setting to life. From the customs to the accent to the sense of pride in their homeland, Cornwall is brought to life within these pages. The rugged beauty and wildness of the Cornish coast is just so compellingly written. The sea and its beauty almost becomes a character in and of itself, and Poppy’s love for it shines.

After meeting Poppy in the previous book, I honestly wasn’t sure if she was naïve or flighty or just young. In this story, I felt deeply for her and related to her feelings of wanting to keep the darkness at bay. While the word depression is not mentioned explicitly, it is obvious that this is what Poppy struggles with. The author later confirms this lovingly in her note at the end, which is a thoughtful touch. I appreciated that Poppy is viewed as an all-around optimistic person – we don’t all walk around like Eeyore, but the struggle is still there. It’s a significant reminder that we’re all filled with a vibrant and unseen inner life, so let’s do our best to be kind to one another.

This is something that Poppy and Edmund Harris both come to realize about each other. That their actions were based on more than a lover being spurned, but rather on things from their past that dictated how they reacted towards their own current circumstances and futures. It is a journey that is filled with romantic tension, some lovely bits of dialogue, and swoon-worthy (and tasteful!) kisses. This story is just what my Regency-loving heart was craving!

I’m so glad to have discovered Hathaway’s books – they’ve all been so good so far. I have read the Cornish Romance books out of order, and it was definitely okay for books four and five, though I am glad that I read these in order because it gave me some context for Poppy’s story. I do plan on going back and reading the first three books in the series.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel; a positive review was not required, and these are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Tender second chance historical romance set in Cornwall. I enjoyed the descriptions of life there, the tranquility of the sea, the characters' ability to overcome hardships, and their eventual happy ending. I also appreciated that the characters struggled with depression at times in their lives. Their reality and their ability to eventually cope while monitoring themselves for future signs is very true to life and inspiring to read about.

This is an emotional, moving, and beautiful second chance romance that had me on the edge of my seat.

There were frustrating moments, heart breaking moments, fun moments and heart soaring moments. I felt transported to Cornwall, and my heart was so full when Edmund and Poppy finally found their happiness together.

This story deals with 2 heavier topics, and the author dealt with them beautifully! I felt inspired by these two amazing characters who overcame so much, and helped heal each other’s hearts. I found the theme of finding hope and light in the darkness so inspiring.

I loved the Cornish games and treats featured in this story! I loved getting a taste of this beautiful part of the world! The pining unraveled my heart and all of the emotions felt real and were portrayed so well! The joy after all of the heartache felt so triumphant!!!

Poppy and Edmund deserve all the happiness, and I found myself cheering for them so soo much! I enjoyed their story. What a wonderful finale for this amazing series!(I still need to read book 2 and 3 but I’ll get there someday!)

Not sure what words I can use to accurately describe what this book did to my heart. It was an emotional story. All about a second chance romance in the beautiful Cornwall part of the country. After all the little tidbits of Poppy and Edmund's story from other books in this series, it was a relief to finally get an entire book dedicated to them. All the heartache, longing, angst, family issues, forgiveness, etc. just made this book absolute perfection.

Deborah Hathaway is such a talented writer. It's so easy to get absorbed into her writing and storytelling. I could hardly set this book down.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Romance: kisses
CW: mention of history of abuse as a child, depression, grief

We see the early days of Poppy and Edmund's relationship in the previous books in the series, so I was so happy that we get their full story in this final book. Poppy has gone through different stages of love with the lieutenant- puppy love as a teenager, first love as a young adult, and unrequited love when he refuses to return to her small hamlet. They don't think they will ever see each other again, when he is summoned back by his friends running the lighthouse. There is much more animosity and resentment than the book description infers, and they have their issues to work through before they can reveal to themselves and each other that their love still burns beneath the surface. I would have liked to see more of the light-hearted sides of their personalities, but they had to wade through quite a bit of angst to get there. As always the setting is amazing and I loved the roles the other members of Poppy's family and community play in her life.

Have you ever wanted to travel to a place that the book you were reading is set in?

Cornwall is definitely on my list of places because of this very well written Cornish Romance series by @authordeborahmhathaway ! She paints the setting so beautifully with her words! 😍😍From the Fields of Porthlenn is the 5th and final book in this series but while I was reading I kept thinking, "Deborah could write another story for this character, this character, this character and... ooh, this character!" Those of you who have read this series, what do you think? Another 5 books or so? 🤔🤞🏻I think that'd be great! 😏

But in all seriousness, this series has been great and ended on a fantastic note! I admire authors like Deborah who write such amazing stories and put their heart and soul into each one! After reading this book and Deborah Hathaway's Author Notes, I appreciate her books and the process all authors go through to write such captivating tales. ❤️❤️

The imagery in these books is seriously amazing, y'all! I felt like I was in that little fishing hamlet located in Cornwall, experiencing things right along with these characters! I seriously wanted to pack my bags and move there!

This specific book has characters, Poppy and Edmund, who have dealt with depression and still deal with scars from their past. Their story is full of such emotion -that got me teary-eyed at some parts-, as well as humor (one of my favorite scenes is the game with many forfeits 😂) and forgiveness.

We first meet these two in book one when young 16 year old Poppy falls in love with a handsome lieutenant, who gets shipwrecked and has to stay at Golowduyn the heal. He eventually heals enough to continue with the Navy and leaves behind a distraught Poppy. He returns several years later and asks her to marry him and relocate, but she can't leave her beloved Cornwall and the place where her father was buried. It is just too much for her to handle.

From the Fields of Porthlenn is a beautiful second chance romance that fans of Poldark will love! Fans of this show will love this whole series! Especially the little nods to the TV show and book series by Winston Graham!

We’ve come to the end of this wonderful Cornish Romance series… and it was such a great story to end on! Seeing Poppy and Edmund finally come together (as we all secretly hoped for from book one 😂) was just the ending we needed!

Edmund and Poppy both seem like such light characters. Always happy and smiling, having a good time. And their friendship was always so easy. So it would seem like their happily ever after would be smooth and painless… Nope! There’s a lot of history between these two and years of momentous events and sadly, hurt feelings. Beneath the surface both characters are suffering deeply. Each dealing with the after effects of tragic loss, feelings of rejection, and in Edmund’s case, years of mistreatment.

We pick up the story with Edmund having been gone for three years from Cornwall after Poppy rejected his proposal. But now he is forced to convalesce and once again asked to helped at the lighthouse, bringing him in contact with Poppy on a regular basis.

Hurt feelings, angry words, and lots of misunderstandings make for a very awkward first couple of weeks. But after Edmund and Poppy talk more and express themselves they are able to become friends again. But so many deeper feelings are still at play with both of them. And by the end of the story they take another chance on their love with a wonderful outcome. I was so happy for Poppy and Edmund! They got the happily ever after they deserved 😃.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet to read based in beautiful Cornwall this is the series for you! The author does a magnificent job of capturing the beauty and essence of Cornwall whilst weaving lots of sweet, clean romances in the mix. I’m excited for what she comes out with next!

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was such a wonderful finale to the series. So many of the characters from the past books show up in this last story and you get to see them years after they married. This story is about Poppy Honeysett and Lieutenant Edmund Harris who we have met in a previous story. Her rejection of his proposal years before had separated them but circumstances have brought him back to Cornwall. This couple still has deep feelings for one another and if they can honestly communicate they may have a second chance to be together.

Lieutenant Edmund Harris had a terrible relationship with his mother. She had been abusive towards him when he was a young boy. He finally left home at eleven to go into the navy and all these years later he has never seen her or his brothers. His parents terrible marriage has caused Edmund to want someone to truly love him. When Poppy wouldn’t accept his proposal because he wanted to take her away from Tristwick, he felt that she didn’t love him enough. Edmund has never shared the truth about his past with anyone including Poppy or his closest friends. When his mother suddenly shows up in Cornwall, it is Poppy who stays by his side to support him.

Poppy Honeysett was truly in love with Edmund. Her heart was broken when she couldn’t say yes to him and he never returned to Tristwick. Now that he is back she wants to avoid getting hurt again but he is staying at the Lighthouse where she works for the Lieutenant’s previous Captain. Will Edmund ever let her explain the real reason behind her rejection?

When the fishing industry in Tristwick is on the brink of failing , it is Edmund that comes up with a solution to their problem. After years away in the Navy, Edmund may finally find a home and community where he belongs.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

Another amazing installment in Deborah Hathaway's Cornish series!!
---And even though this is book 5 in the series, Deborah has written it in such a beautiful way that it can still be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone! So if you're new to the series, don't be afraid to jump in and read this one! But I do also highly recommend the whole series! [And for those that have read through the whole series, YAY! We finally get that HEA that we have been waiting so long for!! 🥳] And boy is it gooood!!

As always with Deborah's writing and storytelling, I got totally swept away! I feel like I'm THERE with the characters; I love the setting of Cornwall and the community!

I love Poppy and Edmund and holy cow they both have been through soo much and they're both hurting 😭😭 but to watch them work through that and overcome it was soo beautiful and inspiring! And it makes the HEA in the end all the sweeter!

As per usual, Deborah is the QUEEN of the ALMOST KISS! I was dyyying, HOLY COW the tensionnnnn!! 👏👏👏 very well done!!
And then that kiss in the sand.. 🔥*swooon fantastic!

Even though I've read most of this series and I knew some background on Poppy and Edmunds relationship-history, I had no clue what direction their story would go, and I just have to say I loved it!
From their first reunion, to their bickering, to learning to open up and trust, being friends, deepening their emotional connection, ALL THE THINGS! So well done!!

I could go on and on, but just know that I loved this book, it's wonderful and I highly recommend for all those that love historical romance and especially second-chance romance! ❤️

Deborah Hathaway has once again transported me to the beautiful land of Cornwall and stolen my heart with her delightful and endearing characters and story.
I loved this book! Second chance romance is my jam and this story just took that trope and spun it into gold. Edmund and Poppy had such a rich backstory and their character arcs were well-thought out and well-developed. I loved the push and pull between them, but even more so, I loved when they were open and honest with each other. The romance just made my heart happy. There were so many "almost" moments and it just kept building until a kiss that was epic in my opinion. I felt their feelings seeping off the page. I just want to go back and read it all over again.
Hathaway did not shy away from some deeper concepts with these characters and I felt like both Poppy and Edmund were very relatable for different reasons. They had hurts and fears and I like that there was validation, but also this gentle nudge to move forward. It had a very hopeful message to it.
As the last book in one of my absolute most favorite Regency series, this definitely did the series justice. I loved the cameos of the previous books’ characters and the natural way Hathaway intertwined everything. If I could give it ten stars I would. I fully recommend this book and the entire Cornish Romance series. This is a must read for me.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Two years have passed since Poppy last saw the man who broke her heart, and she refuses to pine after him any longer. But when the lieutenant returns to the Cornish countryside, her resolve is put to the test.

Edmund has spent most of his life at sea and firmly believes that is where he is meant to be. His heart and mind, however, often wanders to the young woman he left behind. Her rejection broke him, and he will under no circumstance ever allow her so close again. Ordered to take a few weeks to rest an old injury, Edmund returns to Tristwick, and seeing Poppy has his emotions in a knot.

After a tumultuous reunion, Edmund and Poppy decide to lay the past to rest and rekindle their friendship in an effort to save the community from impending devastation. But the feelings they have both tried to suppress over the years linger just below the surface and are fighting hard to break free. Can they overcome the obstacles standing between them as they work together to save Tristwick?

This was my first Cornish romance and WOW! I really enjoyed Poppy and Edmund. I loved the tension between them. They both had so much room to grow and did so beautifully. Deborah really pulls you in with the detailed description, and I loved being taken to a little part of England I've never been in my reading. This is the last book in the series (I think? XD), and I will absolutely be picking up the rest of them. I need to know more about all these other characters, esp the Kendricks!

Poppy and Edmunds story was the perfect way to end Deborah’s Cornish series. It has quickly become a favorite of mine. Poppy and Edmund are both hurting after breaking things off years before, but after many ups and downs they are able to find another chance at love with each other. I love the bickering and the teasing throughout the story. But I also love how Deborah dives into some deep stuff such as anxiety and depression. These things aren’t often brought up in historical reads, but I feel like it is a topic that a lot of readers can relate to.

Another thing that is always a favorite of mine when I read Deborah’s book is her unique ability to transport you to the different settings throughout the story. She takes such time and detail describing a magnificent sunset on the beach or the beauty of flowers blooming on the cliff sides that you can’t but help feel like you are there. Not many authors have such a skill to do that!

And most of all I love the sweet and clean romance. The slow build up with stolen glances, past memories together, and jealous feelings until we reach that long awaited kiss on the beach and the happy ending. Overall I would highly recommend this book and any of the previous books in the series!
