In Voices of Newcomers: Experiences of Multilingual Learners, Dr. Denise Furlong has created an essential resource for educators, especially those working with multilingual learners. As someone who teaches high school English and is pursuing a graduate degree to become a Reading Specialist, I am always on the lookout for practical tools that will help me support all of my students, particularly those who are striving readers or English learners. This book delivers on multiple fronts.

I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Furlong as a professor and advisor during my graduate studies. She is compassionate, encouraging, and truly inspires teachers to advocate for their students. That same passion and commitment to equity shine through in her writing. The book is filled with student testimonials that give a voice to the multilingual learners in our classrooms, making their experiences and challenges deeply personal and relatable. These stories alone make the book worth reading, as they help remind us why we do what we do as educators.

What I found especially valuable, though, was the abundance of ready-to-use strategies. The scaffolding resources are fantastic—not just for multilingual learners, but for any student who may be struggling with reading. Even in classrooms that do not have a large multilingual population, the strategies in this book can easily be adapted to benefit all students. With curriculum cuts and ever-changing demands, having resources like this at the ready is a game-changer. The appendix is filled with tools and handouts that you can start using immediately, which is a huge plus in a profession where time is always at a premium.

One of the greatest challenges in education is the constant pressure to meet goals within the constraints of the school year. We all feel like there’s never enough time. But having Voices of Newcomers as a resource in your toolkit can help you feel more confident and prepared to support your students, no matter their background or reading level.

In short, this book is an invaluable resource for any educator looking to strengthen their teaching practice and better serve their students, particularly multilingual learners. Whether you’re a seasoned teacher or just starting out, the practical strategies and personal stories will leave a lasting impact on how you approach your classroom.
