A pandemic. Solar flares. Climate change. Famine. War. Death. Humanity would have been doomed if it wasn't for the rise of the Ableds-- the common term for people with uncommon abilities.
Canary is driven. She is fearless. She has a robust sense of self-preservation that she readily ignores if saving herself means putting others in danger. She leads a rag-tag team of Ableds who are the only family she's ever known. In a world where abilities define who an Abled is, hers change every time she uses them.
The first generation of Ableds saved a dying Earth long before Canary was born, but now a new crisis someone is kidnapping Abled children. No one knows who is behind the abductions, and the children's non-Abled family members are never left alive, proving that the kidnappers are as violent as they are heartless. Canary's mission is to find out who is behind the kidnappings and stop any more families from being ripped apart.
As her team begins to unravel the truth, a shattering betrayal comes from within and Canary must decide if she would rather fade into obscurity, or step up and prove that she is more than a pawn.
This was so good! I read it all in a few days! The chapters are short, and easy to read so I often found myself reading 30 pages in what felt like 10 pages. It kind of reminds me of Shatter Me, but I actually like Pawn more. I felt more connected to the characters and found myself devastated when something happened to them. I 100% recommend this book and can't wait to read the rest of the series! It is about a girl named Canary. She lost her memory from when she was younger and does not know who her family is. There are several people with powers called the Ableds, and some people are trying to find out why. A group of them work together kind of like Shatter Me and try to solve the mystery of why some of the Ableds are going missing. Some people love them and view them as people who save the world and others do not see them that way and try to stop them. This book takes place several years from now also. There are lots of betrayals, found family, heart break, adventure, plot twists, and some romance. I highly recommend Pawn by R.G. Hurley.
What an amazing series introduction! I won't comment on anything specific from the story because I consider everything to be a spoiler, BUT I would consider this a must read. I was enthralled by the story and left feeling immersed in the world.Thoughtful groundwork was put into the world and character building, and it shows. This book succintly: utterly captivating! I cannot wait for book two (and three) to arrive on my doorstep!
There was nothing bad about this book. It just didn't hook me. It's a fun concept and world, with some fun references to genetics that I always love to see, but I never connected to the characters or felt invested in what was going on. I think this book would be enjoyable for a lot of people, but it wasn't for me. I got halfway through and decided I wasn't enjoying it enough to invest time in reading the second half.
Thank goodness I have the second book right next to me because I don’t think I’d be willing to wait long for it. Such a fun premise and looking forward to how this story continues!
This one was better than I thought it was going to be. Definitely an indie author to keep an eye out for. The pacing and plot were great and the characters were spot on. Now I need the next one.
