One of the most comprehensive and an unbiased account of British atrocity rule. The author Prashant Pole presents before us unflinching, unwavering and powerful account of the atrocities committed by British rule on economical, financial, social, cultural, moral, geopolitical and Indian economy. There is a critical and urgent need to understand amongst Indians to know their glorious past, which has unfortunately been forgotten. Prashant Pole has done huge favour by writing this outstanding book which continues to be relevant for India and Indians. Appreciate accuracy of events described, fascinating. He holds nothing back in drawing the case for India against the brutal, selfish, robbery of wealth and identity of the British.
We Indians are yet to decolonize ourselves. Bharat has seen three waves of colonization: First by Muslims, Second by Christians, Third by Nehruvian Marxists who are hell bent on propagating the first two colonizations and changing the self image of this country and its natives. Any free society that aspires to remain free should develop the guts to accept it pasts as it has really happened. It’s a very important angle that is often ignored about Indian History.
The author has split the task of narrating Indian story into 9 sections. He started from the entry of Britain till the Independence of India. In between these two chapters, he covers Shipping industry, Textile industry, Health services, Education system, laws, loot of Bharat and how Britain left India. He has successfully carried the conviction with the readers with irrefutable facts and impeccable presentation. For 190 years, the subjugation that our forefathers endured is downright painful. The book touches on the issues and does not go to the absolute core. It’s somewhat brief in nature.
The British did everything to further their plunder. The railways were created to transport raw materials and finished goods to profiteer from. Their education system was to create a cadre of clerks to their administrative apparatus. It was a self-serving, rapacious and brutal empire that stopped at nothing in furthering their greed. That is laid bare in his expose of the empire. The brutal rule and the serious criminal conduct of the Britishers who ruled, their treachery, duplicity, hypocrisy, their depravity and their lack of moral scruples is captured in this well argued book that takes down the British sympathizers arguments that the empires has been beneficial to India. Just around the beginning of the cursed Mughal rule, Indian GDP as share of world GDP was 35% which shrunk to 20% by the end of their rule. It was further dip to 2.8% when British left India. The powerful arguments, substantiated with ample evidence, that Prashant Pole puts forth, shows the true colours of the British invaders, who are presumed-to-be gentlemanly, but in reality just a bunch of bloodthirsty warmongering greed hounds. The fact that many Indian institutions were destroyed by the British and how they introduced their education system is well presented. I am also glad writer mentioned how they want to Christianized India. The case of the famines that the British caused by diverting grain from India is well written. Industrial Revolution was built on Indian money, while destroying India's economy is again well explained. For those those who think India got Independence because non violence need to read this book and educate themselves.
By the end of the book, even the most peacenik millennial will be seething in righteous anger, against the systematic oppression, thuggery, murder and blatant loot unleashed by the British on the unsuspecting Indian populace, which will probably never recover fully from that relentless onslaught that went on for a couple of centuries, bleeding this once-great nation dry and breaking its back, with glee.
Read the book once then you will understand why we also need to know the truth about British rule in India. This is a remarkable book which sets right a tremendous amount of false history written to cover up the extreme cruelty and arbitrariness of the British rule in India. It aims to show that the constant undercurrent of British policy was to loot India and transfer assets to the British with little concern for the life and suffering of the Indian people. A page turner which keeps the reader engaged till the end with point by point rebuttal of arguments used by British Raj apologist. Just as medieval mosques were built from the rubble of India's great temples, all the glitter of the modern west is the dust of the India's past. This kind of books should be added in schools and colleges. This book has extensive bibliography and black & white photographs. Highly recommended.
Prashant Pole does not let you put the book for even one minute. He has covered everything that one wants to know about colonial experience. He will get inside your skin. It is a must read for understanding what we have become due to colonial experience.
A reality we need to know, we deserve to know which was hidden from us by marxist historians of India even after Independence. What India gained from British rule is far too less than what India lost is well documented. It is difficult to guess what India would be today had the British not ruled India for 200 years, but it doesn't matter, as nobody can compensate for the sufferings of multiple generations in their hands during their rule. For those Indians who suffered, the loss is beyond words. Loss of life, self-respect , jobs, broken families all for nothing . A lesson for future generation to fight any such effort by any big power to dominate and exploit weaker countries.
Another eye-opener, hard hitting book from Prashant Pole, author of Vo Pandreh Din. This book takes you through the separate chapters focusing on one piece at a time, like Education, Textile Industry, Shipbuilding/Naval Industry, etc. How India was faring before the EIC gained power, after defeating the Marathas, and how they killed each sector, each industry till they beggared the country. Though most of the stories were known to me, the two things that stood out for me was - India's well established and very structured vaccination program and another was the revolt by the Army. We all know of the revolt of the Navy but Army...that was new to me. And the most pertinent point, that was the key deciding factor for Brits to hasten their departure. It is irony that decades after independence we still fail to recognize and appreciate our legacy and what the invasion and colonization did to this legacy. It is a must read for everyone and should be recommended to all.
This is a must read for modern day Indians who are trying to understand how we got here, and what we need to do going forward. Prashant Pole is an original thinker, and has an exhaustive knowledge of history. His ability to put events in perspective is unmatched. Scholarly account with justified patriotic passion, younger generation needs to know how inhumanly works the yoke of slavery and robs a society not only of material goods but also of skills and knowledge nurtured till now.
Most people don't know anything about what the British did in India and that includes most Indian people, certainly the first second and third generations living abroad. We have heard bits and pieces but this really puts so many things into perspective. This book blows away the comfortable myths of our superiority as English/British saving India and bringing civilization. In fact this was the biggest act of piracy in modern history, a level of looting that is unbelievable. Seamless narration of impacts of British rule in India. Facts and references that none of Raj sympathizers can deny.
A must read book to know Why India is called Vishva guru? Bharat ki vyatha before British rule did the all plunder. A must-read book to know about what the British era did in India and their people. Prashant Pole has covered the all aspects that British rule has damaged.
