I’ve reviewed a lot of “how to draw” books, but I don’t think I’ve seen one just about drawing birds. The book has pluses and minuses. I liked that it had very specific birds, like a belted kingfisher or a broad-billed hummingbird. The end product for each bird is highly detailed, so this is not a book for young children (though perhaps talented tweens and teens could use it). You’ll find smaller birds—like an oriole or a robin—as well as bigger ones like a wild turkey or owls. The second page provides more information about the particular bird as well as a grid for you to draw on to get your proportions right. What didn’t I like? Several things. Four steps are all the author gives you for each bird, no matter how complex it is. That means there is a LOT of difference between the steps. While these steps are shown against grids (to match the practice grid you will draw on), the author doesn’t bold the new lines for each step. So it’s up to you to figure out what’s new in a next step, which becomes increasingly difficult as so many more details are added at the last three steps. Also, I wished the author included some general tips about how to draw birds, perhaps information on general parts of the body (e.g., beaks, wings) and primary shapes used to build the figures. This book would be best for intermediate-level artists who love birds.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
It seems ridiculous to me to shout out how wonderful a book like this is but after actually drawing some of the birds in the book it has opened up an entirely new area of fun for me. The artist has a graph of sorts for 45 different birds. I actually used graph paper. There are step by step instructions which show you each stroke you need to make. Since you can easily determine where on the graph to place your stroke it just naturally comes together. I feel like a late night commercial...especially when I say "but wait there is more!" For each bird in the book that you learn how to draw there is a description about the bird...what it eats, where it lives, etc. You have to see it for it to make more sense perhaps but all I know is that it has been a blast for me (as well as my grandson).

I love birds, especially the little ones. However, this book shows me how little I know about birds and their names, not only in English but in Spanish too. Something to study about if I ever happened to have some spare time to do it. I think that drawing birds is more difficult than drawing flowers, but I loved how after some traces the bird is coming alive. In my opinion, it would have been a wonderful idea to have them in colour as well. It would have enriched the book a lot. I liked the book, It contains a lot of birds, some of which I am not familiar with. The book is helpful, especially with the use of the grid, placing a numbers to indicate the column and row number would be helpful in drawing. Of course, the first time is not perfect, I still need to practice. Now that I know how to draw birds, coloring them would be the next adventure.

This is a great book to learn to draw birds. The steps are easy to follow, and I used grid paper to get the dimensions right. Just loved the instructions and illustrations.
