Questions about astronomy are answered in a fun, kid-friendly way and accompanied by quirky cartoon illustrations that will entertain readers and help them remember important facts. What The Universe is a Q&A book that offers easy-to-understand answers to tough science questions! Fans of What The Universe will also enjoy the other book in the series, What Science .
Last June, I shared the first in a series perfect for curious kids, WHAT ABOUT: SCIENCE. Today I’m sharing the next two books in the series, WHAT ABOUT: THE UNIVERSE and WHAT ABOUT: PHILOSOPHY. Curious kids like to know about the world and how it works and these books will help answer the questions that maybe you can’t answer.
Did you know black holes really aren’t holes? Who was the first to go to space? Hint, it wasn’t a human. These questions and thirty-six others are answered in this illustrated question-and-answer book all about our Universe and Space.
Beginning with a glossary of space terms and brief facts about the universe, the authors begin with some of the bigger and more popular questions about our Universe. Explaining how the moon revolves around the Earth with an illustration of kicking a rock, teaches kids about gravity in an understandable way and makes it fun. Along with answering the burning question, the authors often include other fun facts about that particular topic like while learning about the International Space Station, kids will learn Peggy Whitson holds the record for the most time spent in space – 665 days!
I love that the information given is enough to satisfy the question but also might encourage kids to want to know more. For example, in What is a Constellation?, kids will learn about how the constellations tell a story from ancient history and the names of the shapes the stars make. If they haven’t already, they will definitely want to go outside at night and see if they can spot the Big Dipper, or Leo, or Cygnus.
Keep your kids learning this summer with books that teach, engage, and encourage them to want to know more.
This is a fun nonfiction book about mysteries of the universe for children ages 7-12. The book is illustrated in a fun graphic format that pairs nicely with engaging text to answer some of the biggest questions children (and adults) have about the universe. How big is the sun? Why are planets round? Is travel to Jupiter possible? What is the Milky Way?
The format and style of this book helps make these complex topics accessible to children, and I love the breadth of topics covered around space and all things astronomy. There is a wealth of information here and the book is nicely organized and indexed so children can flip around and visit this in different sittings. I appreciate the attention to detail on each topic and how the illustrations really help tell the story.
***Note: I was given a review copy of this book via Blue Slip Media. Opinions are my own.
Do you have a space aficionado like my 4 year old nephew? Someone who can name and describe every planet? This boldly illustrated book answers 39 questions even he might not even be able to answer. It has a detailed table of contents listing each of the 39 questions, and an index in case you need more assistance finding information. This is a book an early elementary or a middle grader can read alone, but it’s also one caregivers can share with interested kids, ages 4+.. Its format of one or two page answers to each of the questions easily lends itself to sharing and discussing a few questions each night before bed.
A few of the questions include:
How are stars born?
Can you time travel?
Is it cold in space?
How fast do rockets go?
Many thanks to Blue Slip Media and Twirl Publishing for sharing this interesting book.
