"Now the sun is dipping low It’s time to go to bed. Swaddled tight in seaweed wraps They rest their sleepy heads…"
A soothing board book lullaby about mer-moms and their mer-babies at bedtime, from the creator of The Book of Selkie and Wildflower and the illustrator of The Mermaid Handbook. With a lush ocean palette and gentle text, baby will soon be dreaming of seal kisses and moonlit waves.
Briana Corr Scott is an artist and author based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. She tells stories about the beauty of the natural world in her oil paintings, paper doll creations and children’s literature.
Briana studied painting and museum education at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. She moved to Nova Scotia after her graduation in 2006.
Briana has dedicated herself to painting and drawing from life. Her art and stories are inspired by experiences of drawing objects in nature. Briana works primarily in oil and gouache to make botanical drawings, illustrations, animations, surface patterns, and paintings. She is inspired by the strange, overlooked details of the Nova Scotia coast. Weeds, moths, periwinkles and fog are some of the star subjects in her work.
Her residency at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan, Ireland during the summer of 2019 was a turning point in her career. While hiking and painting in the rocky hills, she allowed her various art mediums to merge playfully. She now uses her oil paintings, illustrations, and poems together to create magical short stop-motion animations.
Briana’s children’s literature blends together her series of paper dolls with the stories and poems that she writes while walking in nature. Her first and second picture books, “She Dreams of Sable Island,”, and “The Book of Selkie” were published by Nimbus Publishing Ltd. in 2019. She is currently working on “Wildflower”, a retelling of the classic tale of Thumbelina, to be released in spring 2021.
Briana has shown her fine art work in solo and group shows at Argyle Fine Art and Teichart Gallery in Halifax. Her various art works have appeared internationally in online features, film and magazines. Her short stop motions have been featured on CBC Nova Scotia. She has read aloud from “She Dreams of Sable Island” and discussed her writing process and art practice at numerous events, including public talks at Argyle Fine Art, "Word on the Street" at the Halifax Public Library and the Museum of Natural History in Halifax.
In all honesty, I expected much more of this, considering my previous experience with the creator's work. This is just a couple of pages of calming incidental detail, as mer-mummies take their babies in their arms for the night, but in bringing in rhymes from the second spread on all it does is show that the first spread lacks one, and in bringing in hand lettering and suchlike on the last image it again forces us to ask 'why's it switched into being like that, now it's all but over?!'. It can look pretty, but before now I'd have said this artist's work bloody well definitively DOES look pretty, and the mer-milfs look just too coy for something that could have had old-school, Victorian charm, elegance and maternal beauty dripping from it. I'm sure it might still do a job, but I can only report the disappointment in this feeling average.
This is a tender precious bedtime story presented in board book form that is sure to lull little ones to sleep. It features mer-moms and mer-babies and the love that they share together.
“ Now the sun is dipping low It’s time to go to bed. Swaddled tight in seaweed wraps They rest their sleepy heads.”
The illustrations are gentle and beautiful. You can almost hear the gentle waves and feel the seal kisses…a perfect calm, tranquil ending to a busy day. This book is from the creator of "The Book of Selkie" and "Wildflower" and "She Dreams of Sable Island." I love it and highly recommend it!
Mermaids Lullaby by Briana Corr Scott is a very artistically detailed little book about mermaid children getting ready for bed.
I adored the art in this. It was so beautiful. I’m definitely gonna find myself going back to study the way the artist drew the people and the water. It was memorizing.
The story too was also very cute, I can imagine little children with a love of the ocean would definitely enjoy this.
A lyrical and beautiful board book that's perfect for bedtime! The illustrations are breathtaking and I love how they show the bond between a parent and child. I can foresee this book being a great way to bond with the little ones.
Thank you to Nimbus Publishing and Netgalley for an ARC of this book.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley (thank you Nimbus Publishing). All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I love the art style of this book, it's beautiful and I can definitely see how it will keep small children entranced. There wasn't really a story, but visually this was beautiful .
Mermaids Lullaby is a board book aimed at very young children. What appealed to me about this was the beautiful artwork. I wanted to read the book to see the gorgeous illustrations.
It's a very magical tale and it's a very pretty book too. The story is short but perfect for its target audience.
Nice art, but not much story/text in its whopping 5 pages. Think of it as a pretty, atlantic themed gift book for a baby shower, just don't expect it to be a classic bedtime story. Really stretches the definition of "book".
In this lyrical board book Briana Corr Scott marries beautiful, vivid words and gorgeous pictures in this lullaby for mermaid babies. It is sure to become a favourite with human and mermaid children.
